Level 6: Self-Belief Level

Level 5: Metacognitive Process Level

Level 1: Retrieval Level

Level 2: Comprehension Level

Level 3 Analysis Level

Level 4: Utilisation of Knowledge Level

Now, if you’re OCD – this isn’t a pretty numbering system! You are probably asking… ‘why are they partially numbered backwards’? However, please bear with me.

There are three systems at play… the self system, metacognitive system, and cognitive system. Each one of these systems relates to specific levels of the process.

As parents, it is important that we understand how the levels of learning and systems work together. This will help to provide students a strong support system to guide them through their studies.

However, in saying this, if this is the first time you have seen this model… it is probably a bit intimidating. To help, each level and the corresponding system has been outlined briefly below, and colour matched to the diagram above.

Firstly, coloured in BLUE, we have level six. This is the self system, which is the starting point for each student. Each student must establish a substantial degree of self-belief, open-mindedness, and optimism to learn new concepts and proceed to the next level.

The next level of learning is painted in GREEN - level five. This is the metacognitive system, which sets specific learning goals and monitors to what extent these goals are being met. For example, it will assess how well a student understands a topic and the accuracy of their knowledge.

Finally, we have all of the levels one to four in RED. All four levels are included in the cognitive system, as they work closely together. This oversees the processing of all the relevant information, through knowledge retrieval, comprehension, analysis and knowledge utilisation.

How do these systems work together?

Well, let’s put it into context… Sam, a grade 11 sports scholarship student is thinking about his upcoming cricket match on the weekend when he begins his Biology tutoring session.

Sam’s self-system decides to put thoughts about the match to the side and focus on engaging in the tutorial session. Sam’s metacognitive system tells him to pay attention to his tutor and ask questions to make sure that he understands the content. His cognitive system provides him with the strategies to recall this information to complete the practice question.

If you are still a bit lost, please don’t worry, as each level will be further elaborated on shortly. Also, if you are more a visual learner, please feel free to refer to the diagram above, setting out each system!

Domains of Knowledge

Now while the three systems process the information, the three Domains of Knowledge provide the necessary content:

Information

Analytical Processes

Psychomotor

The purpose of this is to categorise different types of knowledge. Once categorised the knowledge is then processed accordingly.

As parents, we might not think too much of this. But, it is important to understand, as it impacts how our children learn and retain information.

Firstly, the Information domain refers to organising ideas, general principles, wider generalisations, and details. This is a very important concept as it allows us to retain more information with minimal effort. For example, when flying a plane, a pilot would look at the speedometer to see how fast the plane is flying and gather that information.

Secondly, Analytical Processes refer to instances where a certain topic is processed by comparing it to past knowledge or experiences. So, the pilot would use their knowledge, training, and experience to analyse whether the plane is moving at the correct speed to reach their destination on time.

Thirdly, Psychomotor refers to physical activity that is governed by mental processes. In this instance, the pilot has analysed that the plane is going too slow, and now uses their hands to grasp the accelerator and move it forward to increase the plane’s speed.

This is why dogs can’t fly planes!

Therefore, it is undeniable that the ‘Domains of Knowledge’ play a very important part of your child’s learning. As such, it is a positive thing that this has been included in the new ATAR system!

Level 6: Self-Belief System

The starting point… is the self system… level six. Also referred to as the ‘self-belief’ level.

It ensures that students are motivated and interested in learning the content, as well as being at school. Without this, the other levels are hard to achieve.

While schools address this level through leadership programs and school culture, self-belief forms the very result of what we seek to achieve here at A Team Tuition.

Academic Personal Trainers are trained to encourage students’, develop self-belief, and provide mentorship. The A Team Tuition model has a large focus on mentoring in the program and this addresses self-belief on a 1-on-1 level.

Here, we are very much dedicated to mentor, guide and help our students through their schooling years, especially as all of our Academic Personal Trainers have walked down that same path, thus obtaining first-hand experience and knowledge. They are true practitioners in the field of academics. This way, we ensure that all our students have the right support, strategies, and mindset to succeed by keeping them engaged both in school and during their home study.

Level 5: Metacognitive Process Level

The next step is the metacognitive system, which refers to level 5.

The metacognitive process is essentially “thinking about thinking”.

The term originates from the root word meta, which translates to “beyond” or “on top of”. This level involves using techniques and strategies to address the content provided and, in turn, maximise students’ ability to process information.

However, Level 5 is still relatively “untapped” by schools, which leads to the possible association of them with the idea of unfamiliarity by students, parents, and even schools.

We have crafted a program to help students maximise this untapped level. The ‘Creating A Students’ (CAS); a program that teaches students how to most effectively learn, ultimately creating "A" students by providing them with the 9 core secrets and strategies of "A" students. This involves teaching our students how to learn, not just their class content.

The terms ‘techniques and strategies’ that form the metacognitive process is KEY here – because they form a huge part of our program!

The nine modules in the Creating ‘A’ Students Blueprint are designed specifically to help students develop study techniques that are individually effective for themselves, rather than being one that is standardised for all students.

Now for the tricky bit… the cognitive system. As aforementioned this includes levels one to four.

Level 1: Retrieval Level

To start number one is the Retrieval level, also defined as the knowledge level.

“Knowledge, as defined here, includes those behaviours and test situations which emphasize the remembering, either by recognition or recall, of ideas, materials or phenomena”

This level includes the requirement of knowledge of specifics (terminology and facts).

Further, it also refers to the ways and means in dealing with those specifics (trends, sequences, criteria, and methodology).

It is based on the idea that such knowledge should be readily ‘recalled or retrievable’ especially during the end of year assessments.

Level 2: Comprehension Level

The second level concerns the intake of new information by students. This occurs through some form of communication that allows the student to grasp the meaning and intent of the material.

The three forms of comprehension are:

Translation

Interpretation

Extrapolation.

Firstly, translation refers to circumstances where students summarise the respective information in their own words.

Secondly, interpretation refers to the act of explaining, reframing, or otherwise showing your own understanding of something. This requires a reorganisation of ideas into a new configuration in the mind.

Thirdly, extrapolation occurs when students make inferences and predictions based on literal information in the communication and principles and generalisation already possessed by the students.

Level 3: Analysis Level

The third level involves a detailed examination of the elements:

Relationships among the elements

Organisational principles that govern the elements.

This step is incredibly important and highly tested at school. Why? Because the quality of the analysis will consequently affect the comprehension of the new material.

Level 4: Utilisation of Knowledge Level

Next is level four! It’s time for the utilisation of knowledge!

It requires students to be able to correctly apply their newly learnt knowledge.

In other words, this level requires that students comprehend the material in order to proceed to the next level and achieve application.

Easy… right?

Benefits of ATAR

It is undeniable that the ATAR system better prepares students for University and the workforce, as it is based on an educational model that encompasses a more holistic way of learning compared to that of the old OP system.

It encourages independence, as well as a deeper level of cognitive function.

We recognise the importance of this change and have developed a program that addresses each level of the new taxonomy model that ATAR is based on! This is our 3 Step ATAR Transformation Program.

We provide our Academic Personal Trainers with the resources needed to mentor our students and prepare them for not just school examinations, but also a life-long career.

Given the support and resources, A Team Tuition can to help you leverage this system to your advantage, there is no need to hesitate on improving your academic future. With most students going backwards with the change to ATAR it is a prime opportunity to armour up and break away from the rest of the pack!

Tutoring may just be the ultimate part-time job for students. There's nothing like NOT flipping burgers for minimum wage. Tutoring allows you to explore your career options, to inspire a younger version of you and to get some part-time dollars while you complete your degree. There's a reason it's well known as the best part-time job for university students. For me, my university part-time job turned out to be more than just a way to earn cash without smelling like fries. Part-time jobs are a necessity for most, but only a select few use the opportunity to gain experience while they’re studying at uni. Our dream employers always ask us in interviews what experience we have gained while at university and unfortunately, our answers rarely satisfy their requirements.

Rather than tell you explicitly what skills and experiences I have gained through working with A Team Tuition, I want to take you through my journey and how my time led me to my dream job. Hopefully, you are somewhat inspired by this blog to use your time at university effectively and that A Team Tuition can be the pathway to your dream career.

Not all Part-Time Jobs for Uni Students are Created Equal!

Finding a part-time job as a uni student isn't easy. Finding a great one isn't impossible...but it can make a big difference. When applying for part-time work, uni students first run to restaurants, bars and retail. As an older student, you're still faced with cost-cutting budgets that mean you're last to be rostered on when there are 16-year-olds available. While there are transferrable skills in just about every job, a tutoring position gives you a broader, and often more relevant skillset to take to interviews. My biggest tip: the employer matters. If you've ever worked in a large fast-food corporation, you'll know that the resources for workers don't extend to free fries at lunch, let alone a passionate and personal reference. Not all part-time jobs for university students are created equal - some will help you fast track your career.

University can often feel like an “in-between” space in one’s life, where you’re not quite at the career you’d like, but also focusing strongly on making your way there.

The frustration in this time is finding a good job that works well for you and your interests, paying you well, but which also allows you to maintain a healthy study schedule.

Finding good jobs for uni students can be one of the most difficult processes to go through. Often university students believe that they have to take a ‘dead end’ job to help get them through their studies – jobs with little benefit other than receiving money for your time (and often at quite a low pay rate!).

This is especially true of most part time or casual jobs for uni students.

Tutoring, however, provides far more opportunities and benefits – all of which are outlined below, as well as some specific benefits that working with A Team Tuition provides.

Furthermore, while some tutoring companies only accept applicants who received an OP 1-5 and have experience in almost every subject, our goal at A Team Tuition is not to hire people simply for their intelligence.

We provide a job for uni students with little to no experience needed, because our focus is on a person’s character, values, and attitude towards teaching and mentoring others. If you have a passion for helping others and influencing lives, tutoring is absolutely the best job for you!

We’d love to bring five reasons why being an A Team tutor, specifically, is the absolute best job for a university student:

The Flexibility

For any university student jobs can be a hard balancing act! Balancing a university schedule with a part time job can be incredibly difficult, particularly if that job is irrelevant to your future career. You have to be able to give adequate time to studying, while maintaining an income, and then hopefully working in some semblance of a personal/social life!

Trust me – as a university student myself, I completely understand the struggle!

But working as an A Team tutor, that struggle is pretty much non-existent.

How often and how long you work for is entirely up to you! Tutoring predominantly occurs after school hours or on weekends, which allows our staff to pursue their studies without having to skip on important commitments.

Our tutors are also in complete control of managing their students, which allows them to adapt schedules and tutoring sessions as necessary. You tutor in times that work best for you – allowing you to have your perfect work, study, and social schedule all organised according to what you need!

The Support

Too often in a work environment – especially in hospitality or retail jobs – university students simply come under a manager who guides them towards following the rules and doing their job right.

Our passion at A Team Tuition is helping people create transformation in their lives. This doesn’t just mean our students and their families – we want that for our tutors and staff as well.

Our tutoring staff have a team manager that checks in with them every week, and stands as their first point of call for any questions they have or help they need. We don’t believe in having management figures who lord over staff week by week – every Team Manager is humble, compassionate, and driven to see our staff absolutely smash not only their work with students, but also their university work and personal goals.

The weekly check-in for staff is not focused on ticking off a checklist, but rather on exploring the personal development of each tutor, tailored to their specific experience. This journey helps our tutors transform and grow in areas they choose, becoming absolute superstars in their careers and degrees!

Behind the team managers we also have sales and processing staff who are focused on getting our tutors the best possible hours and work environment, and are themselves ready to help support and guide tutors when they need it.

Of course, all of this is done under the leadership of our incredible CEO Hayden McEvoy, who fuels the vision for our entire company.

Together, we as management organise four Team Meetings a year, where our staff can socialise and be passionate about their careers, university experiences, and build friendships with other tutors. We also have an amazing End of Year gathering where we celebrate together, handing out awards for our incredible staff and reviewing the wonderful year we’ve had.

Tutoring has the potential to feel like a solo job, and create loneliness. We’ve had so many staff that came from different tutoring companies, who mentioned that a lack of support and mentoring made them feel alone and unvalued.

Our focus is to completely remove any and all possibility for that to occur. We are passionate about providing human connection for all our staff, and having a stable support network that tutors can rely on at any time.

This sets up our staff to chase success, because they know that no matter what, there is a group of people behind them, ready to support them at any point!

The Opportunity to Improve Yourself

Believe it or not, tutoring actually helps you improve your own university ability!

One of our key tutors, Brittany McEvoy, noted that before she started tutoring, she was averaging credit marks (5’s) – but after a few months of working with A Team, she had bumped her own grades up to distinctions and high distinctions (6’s and 7’s)!

“The more I taught students to be motivated and follow the A Team Tuition CAS (Creating A Students) Program, the more I became motivated myself to achieve better, and work harder. In encouraging and pushing them, I started to push myself – and I got genuinely incredible results from it!”

It’s a proven science, as well, that teaching others helps build knowledge recollection. Through teaching others, your brain shifts information from short-term memory to long-term memory.

We allow our tutors to choose the subjects they specialise in, meaning that their tutoring subjects often align to what they’re studying! For myself, I study English as a part of my Bachelor of Arts – so it’s obvious that I would tutor students for English!

This means that my English knowledge and understanding constantly builds, because I’m always teaching someone else how to write better, fix their grammar, or how to structure their work.

I had an experience recently where I tutored a Year 12 student on the play Othello by William Shakespeare. By helping him build his understanding of the plot, the Shakespearean dialogue, and create a stellar essay out of it, I built my own understanding and knowledge. This helped so much when I ended up having to write my own essay for it at uni, and found myself to be miles ahead of the rest of my tutorial class!

It’s not just your content knowledge that improves. Most importantly, since becoming a part of A Team Tuition, my understanding of how my brain works and the best learning methods for me has skyrocketed. I am able to adapt any piece of university class content to a format that allows me to learn efficiently and effectively – essentially optimising my study habits and outcomes.

My time management skills have also flown through the roof – which has definitely helped with university! Through your experiences with A Team, you learn how to best balance the various elements in your life, all while also having supporting figures (such as your Team Managers) to help you when you struggle to structure yourself.

The Prospects Available

The best part about the group of people that form the support network – in other words, our management staff – is that they are not hired from outside the company, but rather have been tutors themselves!

Our CEO, Hayden McEvoy, is incredibly passionate about identifying people’s dreams and hidden talents, and helping them grow in their potential. For this reason, when hiring new members of management, Hayden focuses on interviewing tutors who have shown excellent leadership skills, and a drive to support and help others.

“The biggest thing I’m focused on creating in A Team is a good culture. It’s so important that management staff stand as the strongest examples of our company’s culture, because they help create and influence culture in our staff,” Hayden states.

“So we hire existing tutors for management positions because they have a solid understanding of our company culture, and show it clearly.”

For this reason, there is always something to strive and aim for. We are so proud to have amazing staff and an amazing management team, and constantly seek to provide new opportunities for people to grow and prosper! Not all jobs for university students have this!

Get a University Job That has an Impact on Others

With our staff encouraged by the emotional support available to them, fueled by the flexibility of work and opportunities that A Team provides, and motivated by the experience and understanding they’re garnering, they automatically turn into absolute superstar tutors!

This leads to possibly the greatest part of working with A Team Tuition – the transformation of a student’s life.

Of all the tutors I’ve ever spoken to, the number one thing they’ve loved about working with A Team is the growth that they see in their students.

“It actually changes you and changes your life, to see that transformation,” says Katy-Maree Ryan, one of our superstar tutors (who has recently also attained a management position in our sales and bookings team).

“It’s not just the transformation from a C grade to an A that is amazing to see. It’s the transformation that happens in all areas – when a student starts to believe in themselves, and want to work harder to achieve their dream.”

A recent blog article by us notes the transformation that one of our incredible students, Mae Le, went through with her tutor Rhianna Lovegrove. What was the best for Rhianna, though, was not just Mae’s grade jump from a B to an A+ in four subjects – it was that Mae transformed as a person, from a shy person who felt lost at times, to someone who has now found the confidence to explore the purpose and direction of her life.

“Perhaps most importantly, I’ve gained a friend,” Rhianna mentioned.

And that is true of all our tutors and their students. They form a mentoring partnership that not only grows the student, but also the tutor. It is a beautiful friendship that is unlike anything else you would ever experience, and it provides so much joy and fulfilment.

And that is the truth that every A Team Tuition tutor feels – working with this company provides you with new opportunities and development in areas, but it’s also just an amazing bundle of fun! You are always learning, always growing, and absolutely always having fun.

If you feel like this is the perfect place for you, feel free to submit an application to Join Our Team. On the application page, we have included a free Job Description document, outlining the role and expectations of an Academic Personal Trainer.

We look forward to receiving your application, and seeing you become a part of a movement that is absolutely changing the face of education as we know it!

At A Team Tuition we’ve noticed the portion of our clientele who tend to succeed academically are the students who don’t stop working just because schools out. I know, I can hear the groans and see the eyerolls already, nobody wants to work during their holidays, but the kicker is: a little work makes a LOT of difference.

We also noticed that there were quite a few misconceptions about what these students do during the holidays and what benefits you can achieve.

A lot of students miss out on this hidden opportunity and opt to spend their holidays playing video games, sleeping until 2pm and becoming engrossed in their digital devices almost 24/7.

While holidays were undoubtedly created to have a break from the hustle and bustle of the typical schooling week, with countless hours to fill in between Netflix binging and games of Fortnite, opting to give your thumbs a break from scrolling on Instagram and doing two hours of study on most days has more benefits than not.

Yes, that’s all, you don’t have to study eight hours a day every day, but research does show that students who have extended periods of relaxation show a dip in their academic abilities.

Frequently, we hear students say “I’ll just wait until school goes back to catch-up” in their response to holiday sessions. This mentality is comparable to brainstorming New Year’s Resolutions…only 8% of people follow through. It also places a significant amount of stress on a student.

They are already at school for eight hours a day learning new content, so if they are missing key knowledge required to understand this new information, they now must do double the work. I don’t know many people who thrive off working 16 hours a day!

Or they just don't do it and we all know what happens there.

Below we have outlined how and why we develop our superstars throughout the holidays!

Being one step ahead of your peers allows you to have a head start on your assessments and have the advantage of a deeper understanding of content. This means that class time becomes revision and students can focus on widening their understanding. It is often this understanding that gets students an ‘A’ grade as they can now apply this information accurately in a broad range of contexts.

If you have had a rocky start to the year, have missed a few days of school, or simply couldn’t wrap your head around something, holiday sessions provide the opportunity to catch up on content that you may have missed without the overarching stress of assessment.

For senior students, in particular, catching up on missed content is imperative in order to understand different units. Maths units, for example, are all interlinked and build upon one another. Thus, students need to understand basic algebra and calculus in order to understand integration and derivatives.

Even if you may not have missed any content but are simply struggling to grasp the fundamentals of say, poetry analysis, utilising holiday sessions to solidify your understanding can only be considered beneficial in the long term.

Using topics of interest to our students, allows them to stay engaged during the holidays, whilst learning these valuable skills. It also allows for better recall as it is of direct interest to the student, rather than something they have ‘had’ to learn for school.

Introduce New Skills That Couldn’t be Integrated into In-Term Sessions

Most of the time, tutoring sessions during the term consist of keeping students up to speed with their current school work with minimal time dedicated to the introduction of new topics or new skills.

Current school work is obviously the priority and guiding students through class content is paramount.

This then yields the question when is the best time to introduce new skills to students? It’s difficult to teach students the importance of time management in Week 8 when they’re struggling to salvage an assignment due in the next 24 hours just as it’s difficult to teach a student goal setting the day before their final exam.

Our specialised program, the Creating A Students (CAS) program, provides students with a step by step guide through the features that form ‘A’ standard students from assignment strategy to managing burnout and stress.

Develop Language and Literary Skills

Language is a central component of any subject that you may take at school. Without appropriate language, we are unable to communicate with one another or comprehend a particular subject matter. Developing language skills over the holiday period can assist students with their writing, reading, and spoken abilities.

These are particularly important for students studying English, which in Queensland, is every senior student wishing to get an OP/ATAR!

Language skills cover things like vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension are required for every single assessment piece but are rarely touched on once they have been introduced.

This also goes for literary devices such as similes, metaphors, and personification as the ability to recognise and understand these features will form the large majority of English assessments.

For students wishing to challenge themselves, holidays are the ideal time to pick up or practice a new language. Whether you want to learn French for your next holiday or Mandarin to boost your job prospects, the best time to learn is in the absence of prior commitments because learning a new language can be a tough gig!

For senior school students, squeezing career development time into peak assessment periods can be quite difficult and figuring out what you want to do with your life when you have an EEI looming might cloud your vision.

We often spend time during the holiday break assisting senior students with resume writing, job applications, interviews, and real-life projects.

Most of our Academic Personal Trainers are currently studying or have completed tertiary education and Students can use their APT as a resource to assist them in deciding the direction they’d like to steer their life in.

Time to Re-Evaluate

Sometimes, students might not perform to the best of their ability during the term and that’s okay. What we emphasise as a tutoring company is that failure is a necessary component of inner development and identifying your mistakes teaches you what not to do.

However, knowing what not to do requires reflection and the best time to reflect on your mistakes is when you have a clear head. Holiday sessions provide the perfect ‘Zen’ environment where you are able to effectively evaluate and contemplate what you did well last term, and what you didn’t.

Allocating a debrief session at the end of the term to reflect on previous assessment, teacher’s comments, homework, and participation in class and tutoring will allow you to identify factors that reduced your work efficiency and inhibited you from achieving the desired goal.

Reflecting on the previous term will allow for the re-evaluate of new goals that are more achievable and individualised to what works for you.

Establishing a proactive perspective is an incredibly powerful skill to develop, not only as a student but for all areas of life. Being able to take control of a situation by choosing to assess what happened and the lessons to be learned, allows you to prevent or improve the situation dramatically!

Most importantly being proactive means that you aren't simply just reacting to events happening around you, which creates anxiety and feeling that you have little control over the outcomes in your life.

Begin with the End in Mind

The first and foremost section to tackle in your report is the hypothesis.

A hypothesis is an educated guess about the outcome of your experiment based on the independent variables. Your hypothesis should be based off a gap in the research that you have found. It is importance, when writing an EEI to distinguish between your hypothesis and a research question.

A hypothesis states what you think is going to happen, whereas a research question asks something about the universe. One is a statement, whilst the other is a question.

For example, someone may ask as their research question, “Is the advertised concentration of glucose in sports drinks the same as the actual concentration of glucose in the sports drinks?”

A hypothesis for that investigation would be, “The advertised concentration of glucose in sports drinks is less than the actual concentration of glucose in the drinks.” Some schools ask for a research question and some schools ask for the hypothesis so please look at your task sheet when writing up your report.

Writing a good hypothesis/research question requires a little bit of thinking and there are three main steps you need to take to ensure your hypothesis/research question is capable of providing a holistic view of your EEI.

Check 1: The Literature Check.

You need to check if your question has already been answered or if you’re hypothesis has already been proved. If it has, then it’s not a very innovative project idea and needs to be rethought.

We’re going to use the resistance training example for our checks which is an investigation that you could do if you were studying sport science (That’s what I’m studying – this example is not a coincidence). My initial hypothesis was, “Endurance-based resistance training can improve long distance cross-country running performance.”

However, you find, by doing a sneaky literature check, an article that proves this hypothesis! So, the check fails, and we go back to the start. However, you also notice in that article that power training might help cross-country runners but this is yet to be investigated. This is a gap in the literature and is perfect for an investigation.

At this point, you would revise your hypothesis to, “Power strength training will improve long distance cross-country running performance” Now that this has been revised, the next check is the relevance check.

Check 2: The Relevance Check

The Relevance Check is simply asking yourself, “Is this relevant for people to know about and will it add to the current literature?” For the above example, any improvements to an athlete’s performance can be seen as an addition to current literature.

Therefore, this hypothesis passes the relevance check. However, a trivial question would usually not pass the relevance test like the question, “Do goldfish swim anticlockwise or clockwise?”

You have to question, whether there is some use to this information in the real world. If there is, you justify your choice with some background information about the relevance of your research in your introduction.

Check 3: The Resource Check

The final check you have to complete is the resource check. Ask yourself, “Do you have the resources to complete the test?” For our test, we just need a power strength training program, a set cross-country course and a stopwatch. Pretty simple, right?

Therefore, our hypothesis has passed all three tests and is ready to go!

The Art of Experimental Design

How you design your experiment can make your life significantly easier when it comes to reporting on your EEI. There is no correlation between the complexity of your experiment and getting a good grade. In fact, the easier your experiment is to conduct, the less you have to worry about and the easier it is to repeat.

If you need to use the Large Hadron Collider for your Physics EEI, you may need to change your hypothesis and start again. You’re better off modelling a reaction or phenomenon using simple techniques like titration or gravitational analyses (changes in mass) that have a real-world application rather than trying a time consuming, expensive and complex method.

Once you’ve developed a solid research question and hypothesis (please do not stress about whether you are going to be right or not, there is more to it than that), it’s time to plan the experiment!

Your method should be valid, reliable, accurate and repeatable. Search up the key terms in your hypothesis and see if there is a paper with a similar theme or idea to yours.

If there is, try and use a similar method if you have the resources, ensuring that your dependent variable (the one you measure) and your independent variable (the one you change) match your hypothesis.

For example, it’d make no sense for us to measure the sodium concentration in a test that is measuring glucose concentration, so the method needs to ensure that it tests for glucose concentration.

Your experiment should only assess the impact of the independent variable on the dependent. Any additional variables (extraneous/confounding) may influence the outcome unless you control for them.

Therefore, you should only assess the independent and dependent variables otherwise, it makes it really difficult to discuss in detail, the results of your experiment. Discussion around correlations, causality and errors are details which can increase your marks when a teacher looks at your report.

If your hypothesis is proven wrong, this is the perfect opportunity to discuss why it was proven wrong and keeping details about these things makes it actually easier to show your understanding of underlying principles and concepts as you postulate about potential errors.

Make sure you keep a log of the conditions in which the experiment occurred in your experiment journal. This will include temperature and humidity as a minimum plus any abnormalities that you observe. They will come in handy during the discussion.

Piecing It All Together

Now that you are ready to start your experiment, it’s time to start writing your report. As I mentioned at the start of this guide, EEI’s are not typically written from start to finish, but rather in the order of:

Method

Introduction

Results

Discussion

Abstract

For each of these sections, there are specific requirements about what should be included and how it should be written. We will break it down for you below, but to see exactly how it should be put together, click here to grab a copy of our Writing EEI’s & Research Reports manual.

Firstly, your method covers the steps you took to undertake your experiment and should be written in a way that will allow the reader to conduct the experiment themselves.

This is often broken into two parts; materials and procedures. It is very similar to a recipe. Your method should be written in third person and in past tense. List exact measurements and quantities of materials that you used. This section shouldn’t take you an overly large amount of time to write, but make sure you hit these key points.

Once your method has been completed, it’s time to start your introduction! As the name implies, this is where you introduce the concept behind your experiment. When writing your introduction, be sure to touch upon four specific points.

Firstly, justify why your topic is relevant to a particular industry or population. This is shown through statistics supporting the impact of your issue and why it is a problem.

Secondly, explain the theory and science behind your solution. Essentially, this is the logical reasoning supporting your hypothesis.

Thirdly, review the literature. Make sure you discuss the main points you’ve identified from your literature search and include in-text referencing! The aim of this is to consolidate the foundations of your experiment and highlight how your research addresses a gap in the literature.

Once you’ve justified the relevance and the literature behind your hypothesis you need to explain the aim of your investigation. In simple terms, what does your study set out to do?

Then, you can explain briefly the science behind your method and how your results will support your hypothesis. Both textbooks and journal articles will help with this part. Finish this section with your hypothesis.

Writing your results is a relatively simple part of an EEI. Report all of your findings so that the reader can understand what has occurred. Ensure not to explain why things happened. Imagine you’re in an art museum and you’re trying to describe a painting to a blind person.

Report your findings in figures and tables. Tables are great for comparing before and after results, while graphs are best used when comparing independent and dependent variables to identify a trend. The independent variable always goes on the x-axis (bottom) and the dependent on the y-axis (side).

Make sure that both axes are labelled with what they represent including units of measure. Common units include seconds for time, molarity (M) for concentration and metres for distance.

Each graph must have ‘Figure’ written underneath followed by a number and a title. The title must be specific to the graph so the viewer knows what the graph entails even if they can’t see it. For tables, follow the same labelling procedure but instead put ‘Table 1’ instead of ‘Figure 1’ and provide a brief description of its contents.

All raw data should be reported in the appendix alongside equations, standard measurements and a picture of your trial set up. Repeat trials to increase the reliability and quality of your research.

The reported data must also reflect what is needed to match the aim of your EEI and answer the hypothesis in the discussion. Report everything and anything that is relevant including the R2 scores and equation of a line of a trend on a graph.

Okay, we’re almost at the end of your EEI but it’s not time to rest yet – it’s time to write the discussion! The discussion is the ‘make or break’ moment in an EEI and it is often the only part that has a word limit.

It’s where you explain whether the results supported the hypothesis or not and then state why your results occurred. Look for reasons why your results were not 100% consistent and this is where your research journal comes in handy.

Observe the conditions under which your experiment was conducted and see whether there is any literature that explains or justifies why your results are different to what they should be.

Be succinct and logical. State sentences that are true and make sure that you cite every single reference. That way you are guaranteed to come up with a logical justification that your teacher will like to mark.

Explaining your results will take up most of your discussion. After this, state the limitations of the investigation which reduced the accuracy of the measurements and the reliability of the method. Each limitation point should have three sentences. State the limitation, discuss how the limitation affected the results and provide a recommendation to nullify the limitation.

Finally, explain how the results are significant for the scientific community. Often referred to as the “So What?” section, this part of the discussion allows you to relate your results to real life scenarios and recommend what research should occur based on your results.

Be creative and research thoroughly into the relevance of your experiment by comparing it to other similar research. This is the hardest part of the EEI so don’t stress if you struggle. Just make sure your words flow from one point to the next and that you take your time to outline your points clearly and concisely.

The final part you write in an EEI is the abstract and should be approximately 50-100 words. The abstract is a summary of the entire paper which includes: a sentence about the significance of your study, what the aim is, what was found in the results and whether the research could be modified or improved in the future.

Finally, write a title page which includes the project title, student name, school name, experimental period, submission date, teacher’s name and class group. Keep it simple with no fancy formatting. Your entire report should be size 12 Times New Roman font and aligned to the left with subheadings aligned to the middle in bold.

Finishing an EEI is an achievement in itself so give yourself a pat on the back and a nice treat after you’ve handed it in.

I hope that you all took something away from this guide and that it helps you all with your scientific investigations. If you want a more detailed step by step guide I highly recommend our “Writing A+ EEI’s & Research Reports” document. It includes
