HELP! My Year Twelve’s Grades are Slipping! How ATAR Tutoring Can Help

COVID-19 and national lockdown laws impacted us all greatly, but for the students who are completing their final year of high school in the midst of a pandemic, the situation for some has been nothing short of disastrous.

Students were sent home to undertake home learning, with digital learning becoming a part of their new everyday life. Study groups were no more, in fact, contact with anyone outside their own household was off the cards.

On top of navigating the education obstacles, there were also emotional challenges to deal with, such as the loss of regular physical and extracurricular activities, and mental health strain.

Here are three integral steps you can take now to help your student go from struggle and stress, to straight As in time for the QCE.

Trying to navigate ATAR? Read our ATAR FAQ’s

1) Determine the cause for the grade slip

There could be many reasons your child has seen their results go backwards. The first step is to determine what could have caused the decline in the first place. For example – is your child overwhelmed with all of the changes and the rapid rate at which their educational goal posts are moving? Did the change in their daily routine leave them with feelings of anxiety or simply struggling to get back into the daily grind of being back in the classroom with assessments coming at them thick and fast? Have they experienced social issues with changed friendships since they were last in the classroom?

Whatever the cause, it is important to address the reason behind the results. Ask them how they are feeling about all of the recent changes in their life, and see if you can get to the root of the problem. If you are having trouble – it might be worthwhile seeking professional assistance such as an appointment with the school counsellor who can help you in facilitating a meaningful conversation with your teen.

2) Did their time management and goals change?

Without the need to rise early in the morning and get themselves into the classroom, did your child struggle to get up and get moving in the mornings? Has this impacted them greatly with fatigue issues now that they have returned back to their school campus? A shift in a young adult’s energy levels could be part of the reason they are finding school a little more difficult post-lockdown.

It is also possible that the career goals of your child have changed since being in lockdown, meaning particular subjects have become less appealing to them and the focus has been shifted.

It can be tough to rally the enthusiasm for that last push after twelve and a half years of schooling, but it is really important to help your young person find that motivation to get across the finish line and get the ATAR score they have been striving for. If you need to implement structure and routine back into their day, the school holidays are a great time to hit the reset button and help them to hit the ground running for the start of their final term at school.

Help them to define what their goals are, and clarify the steps they need to take to get them back on track to success. They may need help structuring a new routine to help them with their study goals – whatever it is they need, your support is going to be key in the last few months of their school career.

3) Did the mid-term assessments reflect their learning preferences or is this an anomaly?

Did your child see a dip in grades in the first semester of Year 12? Did the absence from the physical classroom mean that they missed the push from their teachers to knuckle down and treat their mid-year exams like a trial run for the QCEs? It could be really easy to blame COVID and assume that all other students across the state were similarly impacted, but it’s time to bring the focus back onto your child and what went wrong for them.

Was the learning language unfamiliar to them? Could a tutor be the answer to sharpening your student’s study skills leading up to their final exams?

A Team Tuition helps students – particularly those in their final stages of learning – to reach their full potential, and it’s not too late to enlist our help for your child. Learn more about how we helped some kids change their results from Cs to As in less than six months.

Turning it around is about diagnosing the setback and putting real, actionable strategies in place to overcome the poor grades. As a parent, you’ve probably had just about enough of this whole “educator” thing. That’s okay, we offer intensive ATAR tutoring blocks that all start with overcoming everything above. This is your last chance to help your child kick academic goals when it counts the most.

Could ATAR tutoring be the answer for your child? Contact A Team Tuition today!

This year is the first year that Queensland students will go through the ATAR system. The impact on high school rankings, and the desirability of entry into selective high schools may be impacted by this change in student assessment. Queensland has four selective schools and many of the private schools use their senior results as a selling point for recruiting new students. How will secondary school rankings change under the ATAR system and what do parents need to know?

Most parents grew up on the OP system (or the TE System before that). ATAR and the QCE is a completely different way of measuring overall performance (it’s closer to TE than OP in many ways). There is a lot of information to take in and understand on how these changes will impact your child. Here are four reasons the ATAR system is more beneficial to Queensland students no matter which school they attend.

What does ATAR mean for rankings in typically high performing schools?

For schools, understanding that this year is a game changer on many levels, means that they may need to reassess their key marketing message to align with the new ATAR system. The huge benefit of ATAR is the curriculum across schools is the same and the marking is more rigorous so high school rankings aren’t necessary anymore (unlike OP). ATAR is praised as a ‘levelling” mechanism for high school rankings, giving no inherent preference to private schools or selective schools like Brisbane State High or Queensland Academies. See My School for more information on NAPLAN based rankings

How the OP system impacted high school rankings

Under the OP system there was a “scaling of schools” on two separate levels, within the school and then across the school system. The OP system used Subject Achievement Indicators (SAIs) to scale students across different subject areas. Each “subject group” was scaled to the mean and mean-difference to the Core Skills Scaling scores for that subject group. OP then applied a second level of scaling – the between school scaling stage, where the Core Skills test to scale student performance into an Overall Achievement Indicator – banded into “the 25 scores”.

So how does all this impact high school rankings? Well, it’s widely seen as biased towards schools with better resources and more focus on “highly academic subjects” (aka subjects which require more intensive teaching resources). These subjects known as the ‘suicide six’ were largely considered the only way to get an OP1 – so schools encouraged students to take on these high pressure, intensive subjects. Traditionally too, these subjects are more popular in private boys’ schools than anywhere else – giving wealthy private school boys additional advantage.

Some argue that this lead to better OP scores for the more expensive schools – disadvantaging schools in poorer areas where there were lower achievers in the cohort.

The second major criticism of the OP system was that 25 bands weren’t enough to truly determine the quality of a student. ATAR offers a far more precise result, and with the absence of this school scaling system, a fairer result for all kids.

Do secondary school rankings matter?

As a student? Not really, under ATAR it will make very little difference which uniform you put on. It is far more focused on how hard/well you worked. But it does matter to high schools. Some schools use student achievement as the cornerstone of their marketing materials. Selective schools focus almost exclusively on their record for ranking. So, high school rankings are extremely important…to school marketing departments. Parents on the other hand, can feel satisfied that their children are going through a fairer system than they did under OP.

ATAR is used by all universities across Australia

With Queensland adopting the ATAR, this opens up opportunities for students who want to study interstate. The OP system was accepted by Queensland institutes and in most cases, those academic institutes would calculate and assign an ATAR mark to your child in order to place them fairly with the rest of the applicants who are vying for a position in the degree of choice. This could cause frustration and confusion for your student, particularly if they miss out on receiving an offer to study at a particular university or in a particular course. Having an ATAR mark that is earned by them puts them on a level playing field with the other hopeful applicants in the same degree. It also opens up wider opportunities to study in different states at a University of their choice rather than limiting them to local based schools.

ATAR is more precise

ATAR recognises subject areas as having their own value. This means that students across disciplines outside straight maths and science can score a higher ATAR than was possible under the OP system. Students will also receive a very precise ranking, rather than somewhere on the 1-25 scale.

How ATAR scores are calculated

An ATAR mark is based on an aggregate of scaled marks. Most students will undertake 10 units of study in five ATAR accredited subjects across Grade 12 (some schools may start these units in Grade 11). Of these 10 units their 2 English units will count, as well as the next best 8 units of work. If the student takes a 6th ATAR accredited subject or an extra certification, their 2 English units will still count however the next 8 units will be from the subjects that the student performed best in. This means that one subject will not count towards the overall ATAR and the student has a ‘spare’ subject

In Queensland, ATARs scaled at 30.0 or less will receive a mark of ‘30.0 or less’, and the highest possible mark will be 99.95.
There are four ways in which students ATAR marks will be calculated.

Examination marks

Assessment marks

QCE marks

Overall performance band

This means that all exams and assessments throughout the year are counted towards the overall mark as well as the final exams. In terms of high school rankings, this means that all schools must help kids achieve consistent marks, not just provide intensive tutoring around the university entrance exams.

ATAR is a fair system for all schools and students

The OP system has been criticised for not being a ‘fair system’. The mark can often not reflect the true efforts of individual students. In the past, students who have been disadvantaged by their OP score have had to enroll in a lower ATAR ranking university course, and spend a year working up to a high grade point average and then do an internal course transfer within the university of choice. This can add another year to students’ tertiary studies, whereas ATAR gives each student a more calculated overall score. In turn this gives students a better chance of gaining admission into the course of choice from the beginning due to fewer external factors.
The OP scoring system means that students sit in clusters, making university admissions a more difficult process – the scoring of ATAR moves in increments of 0.05 which can mean all the difference between a student with a 90.5 ATAR and a student with a 90.0 ATAR score.

Still have questions about ATAR? Take a look at our ATAR FAQ!

It’s a hard year for high performing schools and boarding schools

This year was always going to be a difficult year for schools. The transition from OP to ATAR was always going to be marked with uncertainty and setbacks. Just when principals were wondering if 2020 could be any more difficult, enter COVID-19. Similarly, boarding schools face greater disruption to their school year and parents can be forgiven for worrying whether their top ranking boarding school is doing everything right. It’s difficult when your child is a long way away! Learn more about boarding school tutoring here.

What top-ranking schools are doing in preparation for ATAR

With school shutdowns and disrupted exams wreaking havoc on internal systems, more schools -are turning to ‘on-site private tutors’ to help carry the load of elite performance. How does it work? Your school’s semester one reports indicate a sharp drop in scores. Under the ATAR system, these scores WILL count towards your students’ university entry, and your school’s overall ranking. Your teachers are run ragged just keeping up and catching up.

The tailored solution to falling grades in years 11 and 12

In partnership with the Australian Boarding Schools Association and with our partner schools, A Team Tuition is implementing an ‘opt in’ ATAR tutoring program for both schools and directly to parents. Our one-on-one private tutoring can be delivered to your student in person, or online and is custom-designed to rapidly improve performance in your student’s weaker ATAR subjects. Whether it’s just the one, or the whole bevy of subjects.

Boarder Prep – it’s those two excruciating hours spent largely in silence, doing whatever you can to keep the supervising teacher happy. It doesn’t matter how much homework you have left to complete, it’s mandatory. Boarder prep is by far the least loved aspect of boarding school and one that can leave you feeling like you’re wasting precious time. If it’s done wrong.

What makes good boarder prep time?

Two words: Study strategy.

Wow, just when boring couldn’t sound any more boring right?
Hear us out.

A well-devised study strategy actually helps you to study less. It helps you identify how to study smarter and get better grades without putting in extra hours. Instead of watching the clock for the last hour of boarder prep, you’ll find yourself getting ahead of all your work, freeing up more time outside of mandatory study hours.

Boarder prep big picture

From the school’s perspective, Prep is where you can get that one-on-one help you need to complete assignments and study for upcoming assessments. It is, in theory an essential part of your education, one that your parents would oversee at home.

In practice, many boarders complete the day’s homework and then focus on doing whatever they can get away with while supervisors are helping other kids. If you’ve never sent under the desk text messages or watched YouTube with your hair over your earbuds, are you even a boarder?

The downside of this system is that when exams roll around, your precious free time ends up taken up with mad cramming. All that time spent, and at the end, you might just have a C to show for it. No wonder you can’t stand prep!

How boarder prep is changing

If you’ve been sent this link, there’s a pretty good chance your school is about to introduce A Team Tuition’s Boarding School Tutoring. They’ve engaged us to provide one on one and group tutoring to you and your peers during boarder prep time.

Here’s what’s going to change:

Your tutors will have a big chat with you in the first few weeks. We’ll also be chatting to your teachers, your parents and your principal.

We’re going to be talking to you not just about where you’re struggling in class but also about life in general. Why? Because we want to know when you’re stressed about an upcoming event or if you’ve plans to return home for a family event or even if some boy or girl is messing with your head. We believe that your life outside of school is just as important as your life in school and we structure your study strategy around it.

We talk to you about what you love, and dislike at school, what makes you anxious, and what gives you a buzz. We get to know how your “mindset” is impacting your study habits. If you really, really hate maths, chances are you’re an A-grade procrastinator when it comes to maths homework. We get it.

Next we look at how you learn and if there’s a better way to learn than you’re currently using. Maybe you’d be better listening to podcasts instead of pouring over books? Perhaps that YouTube video is actually of more value because you’re all about visual learning!

Finally, we look at your upcoming assessments and anything that will cause timetable clashes. So, you’ve got a game on the weekend before that essay is due? We help you to plan your workload so that you can spend the week before the game focused on training.

Then we create a strategy that introduces more fun ways to learn. Prefer group activities? Let’s hook you up. Itching to hand in something creative? Let’s brainstorm it. Our boarder prep sessions are designed to be more fun. More productive. More useful. Doesn’t that sound more interesting already?

What do students say about this new way to do boarder prep?

With the right tutor and a proper study strategy, you have MORE time in your day. Boarder prep flies by because you’ve got a list and you’re working it hard. When you’ve got a question or need help, you’ve got more tutors there, on the floor to answer your questions – so you get through your work quicker and with a better understanding. And wouldn’t you know it, your grades improve. Maybe, mum is so excited she puts an extra fifty in your account (maybe, but you know #notallmums).

All is well. Well, it is what you make it. Our approach is about helping you to embrace study and study smart. But it’s not on us. It’s on you. To make this work, you need an open mind and commitment to ‘working the program’. Are you ready for the new ‘boarder prep’? Talk to your school or your parents about A Team's Boarder Prep Tutoring or check out our blog for more info on what to expect!

There are two calls every parent of a boarder expect, and dread. The first is the teary “I miss you” call (usually early in the semester) and the second is the call from the house master reporting some kind of tomfoolery. It’s almost a rite of passage for parents of boarding school students. It can leave parents feeling guilt and concern. You’ve chosen one of Australia’s boarding schools because they offer world class education. Children flock to your school from across Queensland, Australia and the world. You’re giving your child the best possible educational experience. They’re just asking for a little extra help to get on track.

That’s where A Team Tuition can change everything.

“We Believe That Any Student, Anywhere Can Achieve “A” Grades With The Right Support, Strategies and Mindset”

Our team of specially recruited and extensively trained boarding school tutors don’t just help your child improve grades. Our program is developed in consultation with academics, coaches and child psychologists to help your child overcome the emotional challenges of boarding school life, while reaching new academic heights.

Why we’re the preferred tutoring service for the Australian Boarding Schools Association

For over a decade, we’ve been proving that simple tutoring isn’t enough to create elite academic performance. For boarding school students, the additional emotional and mindset challenges can impact not only their wellbeing but their futures. We are the only Australian tutoring firm implementing an “emotional wellbeing” approach to academia. And it works. 87% of our students go from C/D grades to A/B grades, often within an single semester

We “get” your challenges

All of our tutoring programs have been developed in conjunction with educators, coaches and child psychologists. That’s why we can help students overcome the additional psychological barriers to learning, that absence from family can create.

Whether the child is “embracing parent-free freedom” at the cost of their grades, or missing home too much to focus, our team is carefully trained to identify psychological barriers and overcome them.

We then roll out a study strategy for your child that includes time spent on attitude, mindset and emotional wellbeing.

Constant Communication, Constant Support

One of the fundamental principles of our approach to tutoring is the “child’s support network”. Your child needs the support and influence of the school, teachers, peers, parents and tutors to thrive. In a boarding house, this means additional support from tutors to support the parent’s key roles:

Overseeing homework and study at home

Acting as a cheerleader

Providing positive influence

Providing mentoring

Assisting in navigating social and emotional situations

We liase with your child’s support network to ensure there are no gaps and provide feedback and communication with the whole network – so your child’s educational needs are seamlessly met.

Talk to your boarding school

As the exclusive supplier of tutors through the Australian Boarding Schools Association, we partner directly with schools to manage their Boarder Prep sessions. These two hour daily sessions are designed to give students time to do study and exam preparation. Our tutors attend these sessions and offer both one on one customised help, and group assistance where needed.

As your students are looking to achieve that A grade, it is important to remember that both goal setting and time management are critical skills that create the base for success. For some students, the lack of these skills is the only thing standing in the way of becoming an A Student.

Goal setting allows students to truly visualise where they are going and motivate them to get there. Without these goals in place they may feel lost, or lack motivation when engaging in the classroom or doing homework. Once goals are set, time management helps your student plan exactly how they are going to achieve their goals and stay on track with not just school, but also work and social commitments.

Goal setting and time management are important to every student. There are many different strategies that can be implemented depending on what your child is trying to achieve and how long they have to get there. There are also many different methods our A grade students use to effectively manage their time and prioritise successfully.

Personal Goal Setting

The problem with goal setting, is that many students don’t consider that they are actually working towards something while at school. It is so beneficial when students consider what really matters to them and work towards something they want and feel passionate about.

For your student, it may be something like a career choice, but also considering what kind of person they want to be or strengths they wish to cultivate.

Think about it… If your student can associate what they are learning in school with their long-term goals and something that is important to them, they will be more motivated to work towards that goal. The achievement motivation that is created by goal setting, causes your student to strive for success. A grade students understand the importance of goal setting and primarily use three different strategies to set and achieve these goals

1. The Staircase Model

A grade Students are able to use the staircase model to really focus on those long-term goals by creating smaller goals that build up to where they want to be. Big dreams can be very daunting. A student in Year 9 that dreams of becoming a doctor may see that goal as far away, intimidating, and frightening. However, if they break up that big goal into smaller short-term goals it will make that big dream of becoming a doctor seem much more achievable. Using the staircase model also gives students something to work for, which adds both motivation and excitement.

So, if you had that Year 9 student that wanted to be a doctor, that would be their big, long term-goal. Then you can work backwards with them to set those smaller goals that will help them get there. Some of those short-term goals may be getting an A in just 1-2 classes, then getting an A in all of their classes, and eventually getting a great mark on ATAR.

2. SMART Goal Setting

SMART Goals are not just used by students, but in all different professions and business. Your child can use this strategy to make sure they have significant goals they feel are achievable. Using the Smart goals strategy, your student will be able to write GOALS that are well-structured, clear, and carefully planned.

Each goal that students create should contain all five elements of a ‘SMART’ goal. ‘SMART’ is an acronym for the following aspects of an excellent goal.

S: Specific

In order for your student’s goal to be specific, they must clearly identify an action; whether that be finishing an essay or reading a certain number of pages. Being specific makes student think about what needs to be achieved.

M: Measurable

When students set goals, being measurable is important for both their motivation and feeling of accomplishment. A Students make sure that their goal can clearly be logged, measured, and evaluated. This allows students to check in and evaluate how they are progressing with their goal and be proud of what they have achieved.

A: Achievable

We often assume that goals need to be something we need to struggle for. Whilst goals should be moderately difficult, A Students make sure that these goals are realistic enough to achieve. This enables your child to develop that achievement motivation and remain feeling empowered.

R: Relevant

When setting goals, A grade students always keep in mind why they want to achieve them and what they will accomplish when the goal is complete . Doing this keeps the goal relevant to their own passion and also contributes to their enthusiasm.

T: Timely

This part of ‘SMART ’goals ties into the time management that comes after the goal setting. All goals should have some sort of deadline, especially with students. The time limit gives your student a challenge, but also provides a feeling of accomplishment once they complete the goal on time.

A grade students use the SMART goal strategy in many different ways. Some students may set one smart goal for every class, others may group them together into one goal for the term, and some may even set specific smart goals for a certain assessment. The thing to keep in mind is that students use this strategy in all different ways, a goal being ‘SMART’ just allows students to actually think about their goals and ensure that they are effective, regardless of what the goal is about.

3. Areas for Change Model

While the other two tactics for goal setting revolve around creating the goals, the Areas for Change Model allows your student to see what areas they may want to change and set goals for.

The Areas for Change Model shows there are three different areas of a student that can be transformed. They include academic skills, psychological skills, and interpersonal skills. All students have strengths and weaknesses in different areas. This can be based off of their learning language, confidence levels, or personality. The model can allow students to think about where they are able to improve and what may be stopping them from achieving their goals.

One students may look at this model and believe they have superb academic and interpersonal skills; they may choose to set goals revolving around their psychological skills such as increasing confidence or stress management. Another student may look at this and see that they are lacking in academic skills. This can be improved by setting goals around study techniques and exam preparation. Whatever area your student chooses to work on, this model can help them visualise what areas they want to focus on when setting their goals.

Once your student has a good system for goal setting, they can move on to improving their skills in time management which allows dedicated time to work on those goals.

Effective Time Management

Particularly in high school, A grade students need to understand the balance between school, work, extracurricular activities and their social life. It definitely doesn’t come naturally or easy, but once your child is able to gain this routine and have tactics that help them manage their time, they will be able to achieve more in school and reduce unnecessary stress.

The key with time management is that students have many different time management skills and approaches. Some students are great with daily time management and making sure that they are actually productive with their time throughout the day, but don’t really know what is going on at the end of the week or the term. Other students may have a good long-term time management strategy but have a hard time finishing their homework or knowing what classes they have during the week.

Because all students have strengths and weaknesses in different timeframes of time management, there are different strategies that can be used to ensure that your student is successful throughout the term, on a weekly basis, and on a daily basis. Your student may use just one strategy or all three depending on their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to time management.

The Term Assessment Planner

Having a diary that that shows your student what is coming up throughout the entire term is effective for planning ahead and making sure they are able to complete all of their tasks in advance. A grade students will write down all of their assessments and exams at the beginning of the term so they know exactly what is coming up for each class.

Personally, I advise all of my students to have a term planner so there are no surprises throughout the semester and the student knows exactly what is coming up.

The Traffic Light System

The traffic light system creates a weekly or monthly planner where the student identifies all the tasks that are coming up and allocates them with a specific colour that mean different things.

GREEN: This task is still about 3-4 weeks away and should be in the initial stages.

YELLOW: This task is 1-2 weeks away and I should finish brainstorming and start drafting.

RED: This task needs to be completely finished this coming week

As time progresses, students will move their assignments from green, yellow, to red until they’re able to cross them out.

This time management system is perfect for visual learners and allows your student to create a weekly or monthly planner that helps them prioritise their upcoming tasks. Based on my experience, this strategy is extremely useful during exam periods or busy times. There is also a massive sense of accomplishment when your student is finally able to cross something off of that list.

Weekly Management Plan

This time management schedule is perfect for those students who feel like they just can’t get a hold of their homework and designated study times. Using a weekly planner creates an overview of what they should be doing at every hour of a busy period of the day.

It should include:

Study Time

Study Breaks

Homework Time

Family Time

Extra-curriculars

Any other important activity

A grade students realise that a weekly time management plan can allow them to have a good balance between all of their commitments and study times. It also helps your student plan in advance how they’re going to fit homework and studying into a busy schedule.

Daily Time Management Strategy

Another strategy that your student can utilise is a daily strategy. This helps students who are easily distracted or have trouble with procrastination. It is also perfect for a designated “focus day” where your student may choose to do work for a specific subject or assignment.

In this time management plan, they should outline at least four tasks they are going to try to complete, how much time is required to complete the task, and what time they will be working on it. It is also very important that students reflect on how their daily time management strategy went by reading their own performance and raining down any follow-up tasks that need to be completed after the day is over.

When it comes to goal setting and time management, the important thing is that you and your student understand that everyone is different. These are just some of the strategies and tactics that can be used for both setting goals and managing time, which are both very important aspects of being academically successful. Some students may use all of them, and some students may just use one or two. The important thing is that your student recognises which ones they can use and why it’s beneficial to use them.

Every single child we’ve worked with who is underperforming at school is underperforming for a reason. That reason surprised us. It’s not a lack of smarts. Let’s be clear. We have never met a child we couldn’t help to improve. Every child we’ve worked with has had the potential to reach greater academic heights. It’s not about extracurricular activities. It’s not about whether your school is less amazing than the next school. What makes a student underperform?

Every single student, out of thousands of students, had one thing holding them back: Mindset

That means that every single student underperforming at school has the potential to raise their grades. How can you tell if your child is underperforming at school? Do any of these scenarios sound familiar?

The Distracted/Unmotivated Mindset

Your teen sits down to start an assignment and then “bing” the phone notifies her of a TikTok she must watch. So you take her phone. And that goes down a treat. Then, you find her in her room, not studying, she’s going through drawers looking for something. So you sit her back at her desk. Finally, she even attempts to tidy her room as a procrastination tool. You don’t rush to stop her… because you know, you’re witnessing a miracle in front of your very eyes… but eventually, she MUST do the assignment. She’s distracting herself. Putting off work. It’s not that she’s lazy. Distraction is actually an issue of poor confidence. She’s trying to communicate that she’s so unsure of her work that she’d rather clean her room than attempt it.

How we change the “Distracted/Unmotivated” mindset

We get to the root of your child’s confidence issues and remove the barriers they’re facing. By creating more engaging lessons that help your child to break down the workload and to explore it on their terms, they find the confidence to take ownership of their work. This looks different for every child. For some kids, it’s about turning the workload into a game of sorts, where there is reward for discovering steps to tackle the subject matter. For others, it’s about a change of scene, where they are free to move around and take in some sunshine while they work. For some kids, it’s about improving their study strategy. It’s very, very rarely about closing them up in a dull room!

What does it mean in practice?

Ethan was a B student. Not bad. Doing OK. But his mother worried about his lack of motivation and she believed he wasn’t reaching his full potential. Tutor Brit took Ethan away from the standard desk set up and attacked his workload with beanbags and whiteboards. She let him lead the way in learning. She introduced fun and interactive ways for him to break down the workload – so he could focus on it, without distraction. Ethan is now an “A” student and the recipient of the coveted Principal’s Award.

Read Ethan’s Story

The “I Can’t Do It” Mindset

Your teen tells you, “I just don’t understand it. I can’t do it.” This quickly transforms into “It’s stupid, when will I even need this in the future?” Pretty soon, an underperforming student is a failing student because they feel that they’re just not bright enough to understand the curriculum. We see this a lot in students who are heavily skewed to either left or right brain learning. If your child thrives at Art and English, every maths exam feels like a big opportunity to fail.

How we change the “I Can’t Do It” mindset

Our tutors first address their learning language. The three primary learning languages dictate how well your student can take in different information. If your child is an aural learner, who retains information through reading and listening, a sheet of formulas can feel like an utter impossibility. So, our first step is to understand how your child learns and to translate the curriculum into the messages that their brain best receives and processes. Same information, different communication. Once your child can process the information in a familiar way, the “I can’t do it” mindset disappears. They can do it. And we can do it. Our tutors are trained to make a maths lesson feel like an English lesson. To make an English lesson echo a physics lesson.

What does it mean in practice?

Meet Ava. Ava went from a B- student to an A+ student in a month with our tutor’s help. It was that fast, and that simple. She merely needed her lessons transformed into the language that suited her needs.

Read Ava’s Story

The Overwhelm Mindset

Your child seems to take FOREVER to complete a simple assignment. They sit down to do their homework and it’s a struggle for all concerned. In the time it should take to get the first subject done, they still haven’t located a suitable pen. As a parent, words like lazy and disorganised start popping into mind, and you worry that your child will struggle with other life skills, like holding down a job. Deep breaths.

How we change the “Overwhelm” mindset

Every child is different, but our tutors would begin looking for clues as to the source of the child’s overwhelm. Most often it comes down to poor study strategy skills. We assume that by highschool, children have developed a set of skills that will carry them through their academic career but in a surprising number of students, this is not the case. Something as simple as looking at an assignment sheet and recognising the smaller tasks required to make up the bigger submission, to order these and to begin attacking them – this gap in your child’s understanding will cause underperformance in all areas of their school life. Our approach is to identify these gaps and help them to “relearn” how to study.

What does that look like in practice?

Joseph was a “C” student who was underperforming at school because he struggled with the “how” to study. It’s hard for a teacher in a busy classroom to pick apart a child’s underperformance and find the cause, so our tutor Emily took on that responsibility. Joseph, armed with an easy to follow study strategy, became an A student in no time.

Read Joseph’s Story

The Low Priority Mindset

What is the distraction your child is feeling is justified? What if there’s something big going on in her personal life or home life? How do you get a kid with a lot on her plate to keep focused on schoolwork? No child is beyond helping. We have worked with kids from all manner of backgrounds, including children who have endured terrible hardship and even trauma. When your world is chaotic, it’s hard to find mind space to dedicate to school work.

How we change the “Low Priority” mindset

We acknowledge the stress that the child is under and help them to find ways to work within the space that they have. It may mean finding a study strategy that helps them “do more with less time” or to give them the confidence boost they need to attack a task without hesitation and with complete focus. Our team is carefully trained to recognise challenges to learning. We empower children to take control of their studies and this in turn helps them feel more in control of their situations. Our program has been developed by child psychologists to ensure that no child, no matter how much chaos they work within, is left behind.

What does this look like in practice?

Meet Skylah. Skylah was an “E” student. For her teachers, Skylah represents the most challenging student in the class. She was simply unable to keep up. What our tutor Libbie discovered was that Skylah was coping with a sick mum. Not only did that mean she was carrying a heavy emotional load, it also meant that she was picking up the slack at home. She had very limited time for study and her grades were suffering. We helped her find ways to get more achieved in a very limited time. We helped her feel more “in control” of her life by helping her take charge of her studies. Skylah is now in the top 5% at school. She’s killing it. We could not be prouder of Skylah!

Read Skylah’s Story

And this is just the tip of the iceberg for underperforming at school

There are so many negative mindsets that end in your child underperforming at school. As parents, it’s almost impossible for you to diagnose and correct a problem with your teen’s mindset. Your child’s teacher will likely have made some progress, but nothing compares to intensive one-on-one diagnosis and correction. That’s where A Team Tuition has focused, with our “Academic Personal Training” program. All of our tutors are trained in overcoming barriers to learning and we’re proud of our many, many success stories. It’s not just these kids, we have hundreds of stories just like theirs. Your child could be one of them.

COVID-19 (or Coronavirus) has been more than just challenging for the current crop of Year 12 students. Not only have they had to undergo a massive change to their schooling and study routines, they’ve had to deal with perhaps the most challenging aspect of the pandemic so far – the uncertainty. Students are not immune to the same anxiety that plagues their parents, and this clearly has an effect on their mental and physical well-being, as well as their academic success. So, how do you combat the COVID worries and study stress Year 12s are feeling right now? A-Team Tuition has a proven 3 step program for ATAR score success that will help your child reach their ATAR goals and fulfil their dreams after school. Read on to find out more.

Fear and loathing

COVID-19 has created a pressure cooker of conditions with students undergoing their final year of secondary schooling. Not only do they have to deal with the usual amount of stress and anxiety due to their massive workload, the worry about their future, and the most important exams they’ve had to sit thus far, they also have to worry about the change from face-to-face learning to online learning and back again. How will all this disruption and distraction affect their overall grades and ATAR score? They’ve had to weigh up their goals and consider how a lower ATAR score might affect their future plans. As you can imagine, all of this is incredibly stressful, and it’s no wonder that 40% more Year 12 students are using counselling services like Lifeline.

Wanting to know more about how ATAR is calculated and other FAQ’s? Click Here

Kids are resilient though, right?

This upheaval has prompted calls for educational providers and governments to focus more on their students’ wellbeing, rather than their results. A healthier child, both physically and mentally, is going to produce better academic results. This is just basic common sense. There are ways for students to learn various coping mechanisms, to demonstrate resilience and the ability to self-motivate. This could be anywhere from meditative breathing exercises to organisation techniques to encouraging communication with other students, teachers, or parents and carers. These methods can be adopted in classrooms and will help students as they leave school and begin their lives post-school.

Another method that would be effective is private tutoring. A Team Tuition has an ATAR program designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge that will help them to reach the lofty heights of a straight A student. The program is tailor-made to suit the student, and helps them regain their confidence and motivation. They learn how to set goals and work hard to achieve them. The skills they learn throughout the program will also help set them up for success in their life after school, which is what we’re aiming for.

Positive signs

Despite the current upheaval in their education, there are signs that Year 12 students are learning to better support one another. Time away from school has given them a unique perspective and taught them the value of reaching out to other students who might be struggling. According to various educational institutions and counselling services like Lifeline, students are reporting more and more that they make a point of checking in with their friends, making sure that the people around them know that there’s someone who cares. Students are also making an effort to keep track of their own mental wellness, and feel less stigma about talking with others about their own mental health. Definitely a step in the right direction!

The build-up to high school graduation should be a time of great excitement. You’ve made it to the end of a major chapter, and you deserve to celebrate, but at the same time, the next stage of life is coming at you fast. As high school comes to an end, you’ll have a few new challenges to contend with, and plenty of lessons you can’t learn in a classroom.

Change

There’s no escaping it - finishing high school changes pretty much everything about your life, and the loss of a well-worn routine can be scary. Feeling resistant to change is natural, and although there’s no escaping it, you can prepare for it. Start by finding out as much as possible about what’s ahead and how you can put yourself in the best possible position to manage it. You’ll be surprised how much something simple like updating your resume or organising a planner for your uni schedule can boost your mental state.

Freedom

Freedom probably sounds like a great thing, and it can be, but it can also come as a rude shock when you’ve spent most of your life being directed and pushed through the system by those around you. Procrastination is one of your biggest obstacles in this new environment, and it will destroy your chances of success if you let it. Self-discipline is always a work in progress, but making a strong start is as simple as organising your study schedule. A sturdy commitment to your wall planner will keep you a few steps ahead.

New Social Circles

High school is the puddle to university’s pond, or the ocean of the working world. and you’ll probably feel like a guppy when you first arrive. The good news is that there are hundreds of people around you riding the same wave. We’re all strangers at first, so don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation - it will be great practice for each one of your new classes or team meetings. Ultimately, your social experience in further study or the working world will depend on your attitude, and a positive outlook is far more likely to help you find a great group of study or work mates.

Different Lessons

Good news: nine times out of ten, leaving high school means you can escape that school subject you didn’t enjoy. Sounds great, right? The downside is that becoming an adult comes with a host of brand new, often tougher lessons and decisions, with consequences to boot. Suddenly, a strong character will be a defining factor in your success, and while a foundation of effective study skills will prove very useful, you’ll have the opportunity to decide what, when, and how you learn. As you transition into adulthood, you’ll also have a whole host of lessons to learn about life, from planning your career trajectory to doing your own tax return. Before long, you’ll discover just how much is left to learn beyond the classroom walls.

Pressure

Whatever your post-high school plans, expect the pressure to rise after graduation. University comes with all of the stresses of completing assessment and work experience, while holding down a regular job and narrowly resisting the urge to spend all of your savings on Mexican food. Meanwhile, making a beeline for the 9-to-5 corporate world leads to the pressure of keeping up with a brand new workload and trying to squeeze in a social life around a new lifestyle. New pressures and stresses are inevitable, but there are plenty of things you can do to make sure you’re managing them in the best way possible.

Look After Yourself

Maintaining a healthy body and mindset makes all the difference when the workload gets heavier. Fight the urge to hole up in your bedroom in the days leading up to an exam or an important project at work - otherwise, you’ll run the risk of burning out. Instead, do your best to keep up your regular activities, make time to see your friends, and block out at least eight hours for sleep every night. There is true power in a power nap, if you use it wisely.

Set Goals

It’s no secret that setting SMART goals is key to achieving great results, in school and in life. Even if you know the power of a well-considered goal, it’s what you do with it that counts. Research has proven that goals are far more likely to be achieved when written down, so don’t leave your potential between your ears. Putting your aspirations down on paper makes you accountable for your actions, and it can also be a great motivator when you need a reminder of what you’re working for.

Utilise Your Support Network

No one makes it through a challenge like high school alone, and if you’re lucky, the supports you called on during the tough times will still be around after you graduate. Don’t be afraid to ask your parents, high school friends, or even past teachers for the advice and support you need as you navigate the path into the future. Post-graduation is also the perfect time to start building new networks, so don’t waste an opportunity to meet someone new. The next person you bump into on campus or in the office could be the one to offer you the right advice, mentorship, or even a job. Every person you meet has the potential to be a great teacher, whether you realise it at the time or not.

Once you’ve mastered the ebb and flow of adult life, you’ll have a chance to enjoy the perks of becoming a more independent person, and there’s a lot to love. It’s not only about escaping the perils of Pythagoras or the struggles of Shakespeare, but also about having the chance to map out your own journey through life.

New Opportunities

While you’re part of the schooling system, it might feel all-consuming, but there’s a far more expansive world waiting for you on the other side. You’ll have the chance to explore avenues you may not have even considered, stretching your capabilities to new heights in the process, and as you do, you’ll discover new parts of yourself. Opportunities are everywhere if you’re willing to seek them out, and your education will make all the difference when the time comes to reach for what you want.

Autonomy

Like many young adults in the making, you’ve probably been waiting for the opportunity to break out and do your own thing since the training wheels came off, and graduation is that chance. After high school, you’ll be able to make your own choices, choose your company, and ultimately decide who you want to be. Once you get over the initial shock of change and new-found freedom, you might just find

Growth

One of the great things about a new situation is that it forces you to improvise, adapt, and overcome new challenges. It will probably feel uncomfortable at first, but the best way out is usually straight through. When you develop your thought processes for handling adversity and change, and turn those processes into habits, you’ll find yourself growing into a more capable, confident person - character traits which will serve you well into adulthood.

This model provides teachers the method to enhance student’s thinking skills through a process with 6 levels:

Level 6: Self-Belief Level

Level 5: Metacognitive Process Level

Level 1: Retrieval Level

Level 2: Comprehension Level

Level 3 Analysis Level

Level 4: Utilisation of Knowledge Level

Now, if you’re OCD – this isn’t a pretty numbering system! You are probably asking… ‘why are they partially numbered backwards’? However, please bear with me.

There are three systems at play… the self system, metacognitive system, and cognitive system. Each one of these systems relates to specific levels of the process.

As parents, it is important that we understand how the levels of learning and systems work together. This will help to provide students a strong support system to guide them through their studies.

However, in saying this, if this is the first time you have seen this model… it is probably a bit intimidating. To help, each level and the corresponding system has been outlined briefly below, and colour matched to the diagram above.

Firstly, coloured in BLUE, we have level six. This is the self system, which is the starting point for each student. Each student must establish a substantial degree of self-belief, open-mindedness, and optimism to learn new concepts and proceed to the next level.

The next level of learning is painted in GREEN - level five. This is the metacognitive system, which sets specific learning goals and monitors to what extent these goals are being met. For example, it will assess how well a student understands a topic and the accuracy of their knowledge.

Finally, we have all of the levels one to four in RED. All four levels are included in the cognitive system, as they work closely together. This oversees the processing of all the relevant information, through knowledge retrieval, comprehension, analysis and knowledge utilisation.

How do these systems work together?

Well, let’s put it into context… Sam, a grade 11 sports scholarship student is thinking about his upcoming cricket match on the weekend when he begins his Biology tutoring session.

Sam’s self-system decides to put thoughts about the match to the side and focus on engaging in the tutorial session. Sam’s metacognitive system tells him to pay attention to his tutor and ask questions to make sure that he understands the content. His cognitive system provides him with the strategies to recall this information to complete the practice question.

If you are still a bit lost, please don’t worry, as each level will be further elaborated on shortly. Also, if you are more a visual learner, please feel free to refer to the diagram above, setting out each system!

Domains of Knowledge

Now while the three systems process the information, the three Domains of Knowledge provide the necessary content:

Information

Analytical Processes

Psychomotor

The purpose of this is to categorise different types of knowledge. Once categorised the knowledge is then processed accordingly.

As parents, we might not think too much of this. But, it is important to understand, as it impacts how our children learn and retain information.

Firstly, the Information domain refers to organising ideas, general principles, wider generalisations, and details. This is a very important concept as it allows us to retain more information with minimal effort. For example, when flying a plane, a pilot would look at the speedometer to see how fast the plane is flying and gather that information.

Secondly, Analytical Processes refer to instances where a certain topic is processed by comparing it to past knowledge or experiences. So, the pilot would use their knowledge, training, and experience to analyse whether the plane is moving at the correct speed to reach their destination on time.

Thirdly, Psychomotor refers to physical activity that is governed by mental processes. In this instance, the pilot has analysed that the plane is going too slow, and now uses their hands to grasp the accelerator and move it forward to increase the plane’s speed.

This is why dogs can’t fly planes!

Therefore, it is undeniable that the ‘Domains of Knowledge’ play a very important part of your child’s learning. As such, it is a positive thing that this has been included in the new ATAR system!

Level 6: Self-Belief System

The starting point… is the self system… level six. Also referred to as the ‘self-belief’ level.

It ensures that students are motivated and interested in learning the content, as well as being at school. Without this, the other levels are hard to achieve.

While schools address this level through leadership programs and school culture, self-belief forms the very result of what we seek to achieve here at A Team Tuition.

Academic Personal Trainers are trained to encourage students’, develop self-belief, and provide mentorship. The A Team Tuition model has a large focus on mentoring in the program and this addresses self-belief on a 1-on-1 level.

Here, we are very much dedicated to mentor, guide and help our students through their schooling years, especially as all of our Academic Personal Trainers have walked down that same path, thus obtaining first-hand experience and knowledge. They are true practitioners in the field of academics. This way, we ensure that all our students have the right support, strategies, and mindset to succeed by keeping them engaged both in school and during their home study.

Level 5: Metacognitive Process Level

The next step is the metacognitive system, which refers to level 5.

The metacognitive process is essentially “thinking about thinking”.

The term originates from the root word meta, which translates to “beyond” or “on top of”. This level involves using techniques and strategies to address the content provided and, in turn, maximise students’ ability to process information.

However, Level 5 is still relatively “untapped” by schools, which leads to the possible association of them with the idea of unfamiliarity by students, parents, and even schools.

We have crafted a program to help students maximise this untapped level. The ‘Creating A Students’ (CAS); a program that teaches students how to most effectively learn, ultimately creating "A" students by providing them with the 9 core secrets and strategies of "A" students. This involves teaching our students how to learn, not just their class content.

The terms ‘techniques and strategies’ that form the metacognitive process is KEY here – because they form a huge part of our program!

The nine modules in the Creating ‘A’ Students Blueprint are designed specifically to help students develop study techniques that are individually effective for themselves, rather than being one that is standardised for all students.

Now for the tricky bit… the cognitive system. As aforementioned this includes levels one to four.

Level 1: Retrieval Level

To start number one is the Retrieval level, also defined as the knowledge level.

“Knowledge, as defined here, includes those behaviours and test situations which emphasize the remembering, either by recognition or recall, of ideas, materials or phenomena”

This level includes the requirement of knowledge of specifics (terminology and facts).

Further, it also refers to the ways and means in dealing with those specifics (trends, sequences, criteria, and methodology).

It is based on the idea that such knowledge should be readily ‘recalled or retrievable’ especially during the end of year assessments.

Level 2: Comprehension Level

The second level concerns the intake of new information by students. This occurs through some form of communication that allows the student to grasp the meaning and intent of the material.

The three forms of comprehension are:

Translation

Interpretation

Extrapolation.

Firstly, translation refers to circumstances where students summarise the respective information in their own words.

Secondly, interpretation refers to the act of explaining, reframing, or otherwise showing your own understanding of something. This requires a reorganisation of ideas into a new configuration in the mind.

Thirdly, extrapolation occurs when students make inferences and predictions based on literal information in the communication and principles and generalisation already possessed by the students.

Level 3: Analysis Level

The third level involves a detailed examination of the elements:

Relationships among the elements

Organisational principles that govern the elements.

This step is incredibly important and highly tested at school. Why? Because the quality of the analysis will consequently affect the comprehension of the new material.

Level 4: Utilisation of Knowledge Level

Next is level four! It’s time for the utilisation of knowledge!

It requires students to be able to correctly apply their newly learnt knowledge.

In other words, this level requires that students comprehend the material in order to proceed to the next level and achieve application.

Easy… right?

Benefits of ATAR

It is undeniable that the ATAR system better prepares students for University and the workforce, as it is based on an educational model that encompasses a more holistic way of learning compared to that of the old OP system.

It encourages independence, as well as a deeper level of cognitive function.

We recognise the importance of this change and have developed a program that addresses each level of the new taxonomy model that ATAR is based on! This is our 3 Step ATAR Transformation Program.

We provide our Academic Personal Trainers with the resources needed to mentor our students and prepare them for not just school examinations, but also a life-long career.

Given the support and resources, A Team Tuition can to help you leverage this system to your advantage, there is no need to hesitate on improving your academic future. With most students going backwards with the change to ATAR it is a prime opportunity to armour up and break away from the rest of the pack!

It has happened...

A new era has begun! Queensland has finally decided to ditch the controversial Overall Position (OP) system and follow the lead of the rest of Australia.

At the beginning of 2019, Queensland introduced a new Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) system… the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

ATAR is a new ranking system that gives students’ a fine-grained score that is used as the standard pathway to gain entrance into tertiary study after graduation. To learn more about ATAR read our What is ATAR blog!

This new system is a very POSITIVE change and a step in the right direction for education in Queensland! It has a range of benefits for students in Queensland that they were previously denied by the old OP system.

In comparison to OP, ATAR is a much fairer, equitable, and practical system that supports collaboration over competition! This change also aligns Queensland’s education system with the rest of Australia, making results more comparable nationwide. Finally, ATAR also better prepares students for life after graduation, whether their interests take them straight into the workforce or into further study. With benefits like this, it’s a wonder why this move didn’t happen sooner!

Despite this, as with any significant change… ATAR can be quite overwhelming at times.

So, this article has been put together for all the lost parents and students out there! A Team Tuition has decided to shed light and elaborate on 5 of the key positive aspects of ATAR to better help you understand the changes.

Finding the new system hard to understand? Here is how your child can get a 99 ATAR

6. Where to get more information about ATAR?

1. Your child will be the pioneer of ATAR!

It seems that the 2019 year 9, 10 and (specifically) 11 students have won the jackpot!

No longer will students fall victim to the gruelling competitive nature of QCS under the old OP system.

With the introduction of several changes for education in Queensland, students in year 11 in 2019 will be the first to graduate under the newly introduced Queensland Certificate of Education system – ATAR!

The students of grade 11, 2019, will set the bar for the future contenders. They will be the pioneers of the new system!

Their results will determine the scaling for subjects, providing the baseline information used in the calculation of each student’s ATAR, ultimately creating a level playing field for all beyond QCS.

As such, trend information for inter-subject scaling will be first available from December 2020.

With the first semester of the new ATAR system over, it is clear that the academic future for students in Queensland has never looked brighter!

2. ATAR is a much fairer system than OP!

Once it has got through its teething stage, ATAR will be a much fairer, equitable, comprehensive, and practical system. Academics believe that this is a step in the right direction for Education Queensland! The old OP system was controversial, as it was a broad ranking that was significantly influenced by the performance of the overall school cohort in the QCS test. Unfortunately, this meant that schools with greater resources (like private schools) statistically performed better than others. As such, a student that attended a high performing private school was more likely to get a better OP than if they were to attend a rural state school.

In addition to this, OP’s were incredibly broad, as it was only on a scale from 1 to 25. This meant that students who received different grades may have still fallen into the same category and both received the same OP.

However, on the bright side… the ATAR model is a ‘fine-grained’ precise score on a 2000-point scale from 99.95 (highest) down to 0 (lowest), with increments of 0.05. This provides a more accurate representation of students’ achievements!

Further, ATARs are dependent ONLY on the student’s individual success in school and external standardised testing.

The new ATAR system includes a total of 16 semesters of ATAR subjects and 4 semesters of a general subject. These subjects will each have 3 internal and 1 external exam. The weight of these results are as follows:

E.g. Assessments per subject:

Maths and science subjects:

3 x Internal Assessments = 50%

1 x External Assessment = 50%

All other subjects (English, Humanities, etc.):

3 x Internal Assessments = 75%

1 x External Assessment = 25%

Students will receive practice assessments for both internal and external exams the year before.

ATAR’s new approach with a combination of both internal and external assessment, not only eliminates the previous focus on competition but promotes collaboration!

3. ATAR supports collaboration, not competition!

The structure of the old OP system cultivated unhealthy competition between students and schools, by emphasising a comparison of their academic performance.

Luckily, times have now changed… the ATAR system eradicates any systematic competition, and in-turn promotes healthy collaboration!

Collaboration ‘in which people work together to achieve something’ is a fundamental skill that can be later transferred to all walks of life.

A curriculum that encourages collaboration between students develops interpersonal, social, and communication skills. It also fosters healthy discussion and teamwork between students, which maximises their learning capacity, learning experience, and ability to better understand the content at hand.

Early development of these key skills will set students up for future success in all different areas of life, from group work in tertiary education, teamwork in recreational or professional sport, to tasks in lifelong careers!

4. ATAR aligns Queensland with the rest of Australia

It has been a long-time coming, but Queensland has finally decided to join the rest of the Country!

Dean of Education, Professor Bahr has revealed the main reasons for Queensland’s recent decision to move from the old OP system to ATAR. Highlighting that it allows student’s outcomes to be more easily comparable and understood by the rest of Australia.

This is actually a very significant benefit of the new system, as data shows that more people are moving interstate in Australia. Specifically, migration to Victoria has never been higher!

With ATAR, school-leavers that move into or out of Queensland, are now able to make the transition smoothly. Their ATAR will be more compatible, easily understood, and accepted by Universities nationwide.

This change is also more inclusive of the wide variety of pathways to secondary education. People come from all different walks of life, with different educational preferences, religious beliefs, and customs. Some University applicants come from different countries, enter University as mature-aged students, are home-schooled, or may have first decided to attend TAFE. With all these different pathways, the school leavers would not actually have a valid OP.

However, the new ATAR system takes all these factors into consideration to calculate an equivalent rank for applicants. This provides them a fair, equitable, and transparent means to access University with and gain governmental financial support.

Therefore, ATAR allows Queensland to align with the rest of Australia, providing a more level playing ground for University entrants nationwide!

Worried about getting in to university with the new system? Here is what you need to know

5. ATAR will better prepare students for life after graduation!

While ATAR has a range of important benefits, it is arguable that the most fundamental aspect is that ATAR is designed to better prepare students for life after graduation!

Whether school graduates decide to pursue further education, apprenticeships/traineeships, or enter the workforce, they will have all the tools needed for success!

In addition to developing fundamental academic skills, ATAR encourages the development of key attributes such as:

Independence

Self-reliance

Self-belief

Work-ethic

Collaboration

How? Well, now teachers can no longer baby students to good grades.

In the old OP system, teachers always knew what was on the upcoming exams and could prepare their students for it.

Remember the days when the teacher’s pet always got good grades? Or when you would smile when teachers quietly gave major exam hints?

Well, this all stops now! The new system strips this hand-holding process. Normal School assessments are now combined with external exams. This means that the teachers don’t know exactly what is on the exams!

While this might concern some students at first, it teaches students independence and fosters self-belief.

Students will also have more motivation to work harder and engage with the learning content to best prepare themselves for the external assessment. In turn, this develops students work ethic and appreciation for hard work!

Overall, the new ATAR system is designed to foster, encourage, and develop key skills and attributes that will prepare students for all different paths of life!

6. Where to get more information about ATAR?

While we have already established that there are profound positive aspects of the new ATAR system, knowledge is still power!

Is your child struggling at school? If the answer is yes, then you have found the right article! If the answer is no… keep reading as you never know when this issue may raise its ugly head.

It is normal for students to struggle with school work from time to time. Whether it is difficulty understanding a new topic or with time management. Failure results in learning. Learning results in intellectual and self-growth. The problem is when a student doesn’t learn from their failure. This is when unhealthy study traits start growing their roots.

As parents and tutors, it is our job to identify these traits. Once we identify them, then we can start to de-weed. However, in saying that… trait identification is not always an easy thing to do. Luckily, at A Team Tuition we are trained to do just that! Below, is a list of the top five worst traits of struggling students. Once you know the signs, helping struggling students is not as hard as you may thnk.

1) Procrastination

The Procrastinator… the one who will find any excuse to postpone starting their work. Procrastination can be anything from cleaning to watching just one more episode on Netflix. Let’s be honest… we all do it at some point. However, procrastination becomes dangerous, when it is done despite the negative consequences.

If a student procrastinates it will likely result in:

Unfinished homework

Starting an assignment at the last minute

Staying up late at night to finish work

Cramming for exams

High levels of stress

Poor results

Does any of this sound familiar? If yes, then don’t stress!

Here are some fantastic tips on how to help students struggling with the problematic procrastination cycle…

Show the student that you support and believe in them. This will give them the confidence to approach the task at hand.

Help the student with their time-management skills and encourage early preparation.

Ensure the student studies in a quiet area, without any distractions. This will reduce opportunities to procrastinate and enhance productivity.

Implement A Team Tuition’s tutoring services. Our tutors provide mentorship and work side by side with students to ensure early assessment preparation. This also allows students to develop time-management skills that will last a lifetime.

Remember… don’t procrastinate, dominate!

2) Is your student struggling by being easily distracted by social media, TV and the surrounding environment

In this day and age, students are surrounded by an ocean of technology. From laptops to phones to iPads… social media, the internet, and television is just one swipe away.

It is undeniable that technology has great prospects for a fantastic study tool. However, it can become a serious problem when that beautiful, beckoning, blue screen becomes an irresistible distraction! Today, this virtual trap is the leading founder of unproductivity.

Does your child do their schoolwork in front of the TV? Do they have their phone next to them whilst studying? Do they consistently not complete any work during designated study time?

If the answer is yes, then here are some great strategies to ‘unfriend’ that horrible habit and help your struggling student:

Remove all electronics during designated study time.

If the internet is needed for tasks, provide increased supervision or use settings to block access to social media apps.

Encourage work to be completed in a quiet study area without any distractions.

Implement A Team Tuition’s tutoring services. We know how important it is for our students to study in a quiet, relaxed and distraction-free environment. Tutors work one on one with students to ensure constant engagement and task completion.

Turn that phone off and get to work! You’ll be thankful for it later!

3) Lack of time management

24 hours. 1440 Minutes. 86400 seconds. Still, there never seems to be enough time to get things done in the day.

Time management is a skill that everyone needs. It is the process of planning out and controlling the time spent on tasks to increase productivity. As adults, there’s a lot to get done… from kids to work, cooking to cleaning, driving to staying fit and healthy… I could go on and on.

Well for kids, this skill is first developed in school. They must learn to juggle school work, tutoring sessions, family, friends, sport, and other extra-curricular activities. This workload only increases as they trudge their way up through the school years. As children progress through the grades they take on more and more, but many know how to help when students struggle with managing their time.

If these skills are not developed, students can become overwhelmed and suffer academically. Signs that a student is lacking time management skills include:

Leaving schoolwork unfinished

Staying up late at night to finish school work

Cramming for exams

Failing to proofread assignments

High levels of stress

So… how do struggling students improve their time-management skills?

At A Team Tuition, we have a series of tested time management strategies that are implemented in tutoring sessions. We believe that how we can help struggling students is to help set them up for life-long success. Some basic techniques we have found effective are:

Keep a diary with a detailed schedule and stick to it.

Utilise study breaks as encouragement for productivity.

Display a calendar on a wall in the study area.

However, there is nothing more effective than having a personal cheerleader to motivate you on the sidelines! At A Team Tuition, our tutoring services provide additional support to students that need a bit extra help sticking to their time management plan.

Remember it will take time, support and determination to master the art of time management!

4) Lack of goal setting

Every year we all set new year resolutions. Some of us keep it for a week, a month or maybe even for the whole year. But let’s be realistic… not many people succeed at achieving these goals.

But maybe we should all try harder? Setting realistic, timely and achievable goals can have fantastic benefits. It increases efficiency, focus, and productivity.

For kids, goal setting should first be practiced in school. This gives them something to strive and push themselves for. Let’s face it… a student who is putting in the time and effort to achieve an A grade is going to receive a higher result than a student who doesn’t care what grade they get. Signs that students are lacking goal setting skills include:

Failure to set any goals throughout the term

Doesn’t achieve any set goals

Make excuses for failing to meet goals

Fails to reflect on previous results

If this sounds like someone you know… to encourage positive goal setting you can:

Ask the student to write a list of short-term and long-term goals.

Implement different goal strategies (eg. Staircase Goals, Smart Goals, Areas for Change).

Utilise reward programs for achieving set goals.

Implement A Team Tuition’s tutoring services to provide ongoing support to achieve set goals.

Goal setting will take time to get the hang of, but it is a skill they will use for life.

5) Poor Attendance At School

To most people this seems like pure common sense, right? If a student is not at school, they are not engaged and learning. Obviously, this fails to set a student up for success and will likely result in low academic results.

Poor attendance can also have devasting long-term effects… as most schools have an attendance threshold that students are required to meet. In some cases, chronic poor attendance can affect a student’s ability to proceed to the next school year or even graduate.

Does your child have a poor attendance rate? Are they…

Refusing to go to school?

Constantly taking sick days without a doctor’s certificate?

Failing to meet attendance thresholds?

However, what people don’t often realise is that there is normally an underlying issue to a child’s hesitancy of going to school. This may be anything from a lack of confidence to instances of bullying.

But no matter what the issue is, we have some methods to get that attendance rate back up over that green line:

Emphasise the importance and benefits of school attendance to the student.

Build rapport with the student, so that they will tell you any underlying issues.

Meet with your child’s school principal or teacher about reasons for their poor attendance.

Parents should be authoritative and enforce attendance.

Set an attendance rule (e.g. No days off without a medical certificate).

Remember, while school may not be the most exciting place on earth, it does have its pros. From seeing friends to a range of diverse classes… there is something exciting for everyone. Make sure to emphasise the positives!

So, there you have it… there are the five fatal traits and how to help struggling students! If your child resembles any of these traits, don’t stress! Just follow these tips and your student should be back on track in no time!

IMPORTANT!

If these issues do persist, please do not hesitate to contact your student’s school. They will have a range of student support resources available. Externally, A Team Tuition’s tutoring services can provide additional support that is individualised to your student’s needs.

What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a term that unfortunately is widely thrown around to describe how people feel in a bunch of different situations; exams, before an important meeting or interview or even making small talk.

But it seems people seem to have forgotten than anxiety is a genuine psychological condition – that effects around 1 in 3 people. Many often think of anxiety as just being nerves or being bit uncomfortable, but it is so so much more than that.

It’s when these feelings start to become somewhat unbearable, and interfere with everyday life and prevent you from doing everyday tasks, that is becomes a proper issue.

Before this goes any further, I want to urge you that if you feel like this blog relates to you a bit too much, please go and ask for help. Many people don’t feel like they want to reach out to their parents or friends out of fear of being seen as weak. But asking for help is one of the bravest things you can do.

So ask your teachers, friends, or even just have a look at sites like Beyond Blue for ways to help manage your anxiety, because you will be better off for it.

Also, there will be times during school that you might notice friends are struggling with anxiety, or they might even tell you. When that happens, it can be a bit overwhelming because the first reaction is usually, ‘what can I do to help’.

Some of the best things you can do when you are trying to help a friend are to do some research on what anxiety is – trying to understand what your friend is going through will make it much easier for you to help them if you’ve researched some ways to do so.

Other than that, just keep an eye out for times when your friend might be getting anxious, and when that happens, just listen to what they have to say. What they are stressing over might seem completely irrational, and they probably know it is as well – but don’t mention that.

Also, probably the worst thing you could do would be to tell them to ‘clam down’.

Mental Health In Schools

While the conversation around mental health is beginning to become much less stigmatised, unfortunately, many schools are failing to equip, or are just beginning to start to help the students that they see as at risk of suffering, or are already suffering from anxiety.

Along with this, there are still many who fail to see any sort of mental health issue, such as anxiety, as a genuine problem. But if there is one thing that I know, is that anxiety can cripple you as any physical injury can.

You wouldn’t expect someone with a broken leg to run a marathon, so why are people with anxiety expected to put themselves into situations everyday where they are at risk of having an attack?

how to manage school anxiety

For myself in particular, I always had a bit of anxiety growing up, but once I hit grade 11 and 12, it became a serious problem that I had to get help for.

I put a lot of pressure on myself in school to get A’s, as I had set high goals for myself and good grades were the way to achieve these goals – but it came at a cost. Grade 12 for me, was riddled with anxiety attacks.

The worst I can remember is in week 4 of the first term when I was handed a revision sheet for my Ancient History exam. I remember thinking how everything was becoming so real, and I couldn’t contain myself anymore, I broke down and wasn’t able to calm down for what seemed like forever.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t the only time this happened. However, I was lucky to have some amazing teachers who recognised that I was struggling, and did everything they could to help me get through.

Anxiety can affect so many aspects of school, in particular the most important moments.Handing in an assignment, starting an exam, such as QCS and so many more.

And while unfortunately, there aren’t many ways you can get around doing these things, and many schools might not let students with anxiety take an exam indifferent conditions to the usual silent room with 30 people in it, there are ways to manage anxiety yourself.

Steps To Take To Manage Your Anxiety When In School

First, gain an understanding of what your anxiety is and how to recognise it. This is best done by going to a psychologist, as it is important to never try and self-diagnose.

From there learn some coping mechanisms to try and handle your anxiety when you feel it being triggered. The simplest, and often most effective of which, being breathing.

From there, it is important to reach out to a teach or staff member at your school who you feel comfortable opening up to about this.

While this may be scary, I promise that they will be willing to listen to everything you have to say, and will do everything they can to help you manage your anxiety.

As an Academic Personal Trainer, If I were to see a student suffering from anxiety – I would make sure getting that anxiety under control becomes to top priority. Trying to work while feeling anxious, or even having an anxiety attack is nearly impossible.

So it is usually best to put the work at hand aside, which might stress the student out more, but that is when you need to explain that no good results can come from when they are feeling like they are. And again, it is the same if your friend were to be suffering from anxiety, the best thing you can do is listen to everything they have to say and just be there for them.

They generally aren’t asking for advice, and someone suffering with anxiety generally won’t accept advice in that moment, but if you have some which is based on personal experience, it is best to ask if they wish to hear what you have to say, and if yes, then do what you can to help them.

Something you can also do is talk to your Academic Personal Trainer, as they often are happy to mentor students and genuinely want to see you do your best. They will sit with you and listen to you and whatever you feel you need to vent about so that you can continue achieving at the highest standard that you can.

Next, learn to recognise when you feel your anxiety coming on, and with as many teachers as you can, have a subtle way to let them know that you might just need a minute out of the class or your exam to try and calm yourself down. Something I like to do is find a certain song, or even a 3-minute meditation on Headspace to try and calm down.

While these are ways to cope in class, exams can be a whole different story for students with anxiety. While it is normal to get nervous before exams, those with anxiety may feel like the exam is the absolute be all and end all, and if you try to tell them that ‘it’s going to be okay, it will be over soon’, chances are you are making them feel worse.

Some things I would do before an exam when I feel an anxiety attack coming on (which, let’s be honest, it was all of them) would make sure the night before and morning of the exam were as relaxed as a I could make them. I was always a student who was on top of their work, and would study hard, but I always had a rule that I wouldn’t study after 7pm the night before the exam.

This was so I could do something to relax, whether it a mediation, just listening to music, stretching or anything of the sort to take my mind off it – and to get the best night’s sleep that I could.

Also, making sure your bag is packed with every possible thing you think you might need the night before the exam is a great way to stop stressing about all the things you have to do the next morning. With that, the morning of it is best to get to school a good while before your exam, just so you can adjust to your surroundings before the exam.

In Summary

Recognise first what your anxiety is, as well as what triggers it.

During a time when you aren’t feeling anxious, go to a teacher or staff member and explain to them what is going on and develop a system where when you feel your anxiety coming on, that you can take a break from what you’re doing.

When you feel anxious, do your best to remove yourself from the situation you’re in, and find one friend, or even just be be by yourself somewhere quiet, and listen to soft music or a quick mediation to try and calm down.

Now, these things are all so much easier said than done, and it took me a good while to learn to implement them into my life. But it got to the point where I didn’t really have a choice. If anything, that will be the one thing that will allow the people around you to help you get through it, as anxiety is not something that you should try and get through by yourself, especially if you want those A’s.
