As your students are looking to achieve that A grade, it is important to remember that both goal setting and time management are critical skills that create the base for success. For some students, the lack of these skills is the only thing standing in the way of becoming an A Student.

Goal setting allows students to truly visualise where they are going and motivate them to get there. Without these goals in place they may feel lost, or lack motivation when engaging in the classroom or doing homework. Once goals are set, time management helps your student plan exactly how they are going to achieve their goals and stay on track with not just school, but also work and social commitments.

Goal setting and time management are important to every student. There are many different strategies that can be implemented depending on what your child is trying to achieve and how long they have to get there. There are also many different methods our A grade students use to effectively manage their time and prioritise successfully.

Personal Goal Setting

The problem with goal setting, is that many students don’t consider that they are actually working towards something while at school. It is so beneficial when students consider what really matters to them and work towards something they want and feel passionate about.

For your student, it may be something like a career choice, but also considering what kind of person they want to be or strengths they wish to cultivate.

Think about it… If your student can associate what they are learning in school with their long-term goals and something that is important to them, they will be more motivated to work towards that goal. The achievement motivation that is created by goal setting, causes your student to strive for success. A grade students understand the importance of goal setting and primarily use three different strategies to set and achieve these goals

1. The Staircase Model

A grade Students are able to use the staircase model to really focus on those long-term goals by creating smaller goals that build up to where they want to be. Big dreams can be very daunting. A student in Year 9 that dreams of becoming a doctor may see that goal as far away, intimidating, and frightening. However, if they break up that big goal into smaller short-term goals it will make that big dream of becoming a doctor seem much more achievable. Using the staircase model also gives students something to work for, which adds both motivation and excitement.

So, if you had that Year 9 student that wanted to be a doctor, that would be their big, long term-goal. Then you can work backwards with them to set those smaller goals that will help them get there. Some of those short-term goals may be getting an A in just 1-2 classes, then getting an A in all of their classes, and eventually getting a great mark on ATAR.

2. SMART Goal Setting

SMART Goals are not just used by students, but in all different professions and business. Your child can use this strategy to make sure they have significant goals they feel are achievable. Using the Smart goals strategy, your student will be able to write GOALS that are well-structured, clear, and carefully planned.

Each goal that students create should contain all five elements of a ‘SMART’ goal. ‘SMART’ is an acronym for the following aspects of an excellent goal.

S: Specific

In order for your student’s goal to be specific, they must clearly identify an action; whether that be finishing an essay or reading a certain number of pages. Being specific makes student think about what needs to be achieved.

M: Measurable

When students set goals, being measurable is important for both their motivation and feeling of accomplishment. A Students make sure that their goal can clearly be logged, measured, and evaluated. This allows students to check in and evaluate how they are progressing with their goal and be proud of what they have achieved.

A: Achievable

We often assume that goals need to be something we need to struggle for. Whilst goals should be moderately difficult, A Students make sure that these goals are realistic enough to achieve. This enables your child to develop that achievement motivation and remain feeling empowered.

R: Relevant

When setting goals, A grade students always keep in mind why they want to achieve them and what they will accomplish when the goal is complete . Doing this keeps the goal relevant to their own passion and also contributes to their enthusiasm.

T: Timely

This part of ‘SMART ’goals ties into the time management that comes after the goal setting. All goals should have some sort of deadline, especially with students. The time limit gives your student a challenge, but also provides a feeling of accomplishment once they complete the goal on time.

A grade students use the SMART goal strategy in many different ways. Some students may set one smart goal for every class, others may group them together into one goal for the term, and some may even set specific smart goals for a certain assessment. The thing to keep in mind is that students use this strategy in all different ways, a goal being ‘SMART’ just allows students to actually think about their goals and ensure that they are effective, regardless of what the goal is about.

3. Areas for Change Model

While the other two tactics for goal setting revolve around creating the goals, the Areas for Change Model allows your student to see what areas they may want to change and set goals for.

The Areas for Change Model shows there are three different areas of a student that can be transformed. They include academic skills, psychological skills, and interpersonal skills. All students have strengths and weaknesses in different areas. This can be based off of their learning language, confidence levels, or personality. The model can allow students to think about where they are able to improve and what may be stopping them from achieving their goals.

One students may look at this model and believe they have superb academic and interpersonal skills; they may choose to set goals revolving around their psychological skills such as increasing confidence or stress management. Another student may look at this and see that they are lacking in academic skills. This can be improved by setting goals around study techniques and exam preparation. Whatever area your student chooses to work on, this model can help them visualise what areas they want to focus on when setting their goals.

Once your student has a good system for goal setting, they can move on to improving their skills in time management which allows dedicated time to work on those goals.

Effective Time Management

Particularly in high school, A grade students need to understand the balance between school, work, extracurricular activities and their social life. It definitely doesn’t come naturally or easy, but once your child is able to gain this routine and have tactics that help them manage their time, they will be able to achieve more in school and reduce unnecessary stress.

The key with time management is that students have many different time management skills and approaches. Some students are great with daily time management and making sure that they are actually productive with their time throughout the day, but don’t really know what is going on at the end of the week or the term. Other students may have a good long-term time management strategy but have a hard time finishing their homework or knowing what classes they have during the week.

Because all students have strengths and weaknesses in different timeframes of time management, there are different strategies that can be used to ensure that your student is successful throughout the term, on a weekly basis, and on a daily basis. Your student may use just one strategy or all three depending on their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to time management.

The Term Assessment Planner

Having a diary that that shows your student what is coming up throughout the entire term is effective for planning ahead and making sure they are able to complete all of their tasks in advance. A grade students will write down all of their assessments and exams at the beginning of the term so they know exactly what is coming up for each class.

Personally, I advise all of my students to have a term planner so there are no surprises throughout the semester and the student knows exactly what is coming up.

The Traffic Light System

The traffic light system creates a weekly or monthly planner where the student identifies all the tasks that are coming up and allocates them with a specific colour that mean different things.

GREEN: This task is still about 3-4 weeks away and should be in the initial stages.

YELLOW: This task is 1-2 weeks away and I should finish brainstorming and start drafting.

RED: This task needs to be completely finished this coming week

As time progresses, students will move their assignments from green, yellow, to red until they’re able to cross them out.

This time management system is perfect for visual learners and allows your student to create a weekly or monthly planner that helps them prioritise their upcoming tasks. Based on my experience, this strategy is extremely useful during exam periods or busy times. There is also a massive sense of accomplishment when your student is finally able to cross something off of that list.

Weekly Management Plan

This time management schedule is perfect for those students who feel like they just can’t get a hold of their homework and designated study times. Using a weekly planner creates an overview of what they should be doing at every hour of a busy period of the day.

It should include:

Study Time

Study Breaks

Homework Time

Family Time

Extra-curriculars

Any other important activity

A grade students realise that a weekly time management plan can allow them to have a good balance between all of their commitments and study times. It also helps your student plan in advance how they’re going to fit homework and studying into a busy schedule.

Daily Time Management Strategy

Another strategy that your student can utilise is a daily strategy. This helps students who are easily distracted or have trouble with procrastination. It is also perfect for a designated “focus day” where your student may choose to do work for a specific subject or assignment.

In this time management plan, they should outline at least four tasks they are going to try to complete, how much time is required to complete the task, and what time they will be working on it. It is also very important that students reflect on how their daily time management strategy went by reading their own performance and raining down any follow-up tasks that need to be completed after the day is over.

When it comes to goal setting and time management, the important thing is that you and your student understand that everyone is different. These are just some of the strategies and tactics that can be used for both setting goals and managing time, which are both very important aspects of being academically successful. Some students may use all of them, and some students may just use one or two. The important thing is that your student recognises which ones they can use and why it’s beneficial to use them.

The build-up to high school graduation should be a time of great excitement. You’ve made it to the end of a major chapter, and you deserve to celebrate, but at the same time, the next stage of life is coming at you fast. As high school comes to an end, you’ll have a few new challenges to contend with, and plenty of lessons you can’t learn in a classroom.

Change

There’s no escaping it - finishing high school changes pretty much everything about your life, and the loss of a well-worn routine can be scary. Feeling resistant to change is natural, and although there’s no escaping it, you can prepare for it. Start by finding out as much as possible about what’s ahead and how you can put yourself in the best possible position to manage it. You’ll be surprised how much something simple like updating your resume or organising a planner for your uni schedule can boost your mental state.

Freedom

Freedom probably sounds like a great thing, and it can be, but it can also come as a rude shock when you’ve spent most of your life being directed and pushed through the system by those around you. Procrastination is one of your biggest obstacles in this new environment, and it will destroy your chances of success if you let it. Self-discipline is always a work in progress, but making a strong start is as simple as organising your study schedule. A sturdy commitment to your wall planner will keep you a few steps ahead.

New Social Circles

High school is the puddle to university’s pond, or the ocean of the working world. and you’ll probably feel like a guppy when you first arrive. The good news is that there are hundreds of people around you riding the same wave. We’re all strangers at first, so don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation - it will be great practice for each one of your new classes or team meetings. Ultimately, your social experience in further study or the working world will depend on your attitude, and a positive outlook is far more likely to help you find a great group of study or work mates.

Different Lessons

Good news: nine times out of ten, leaving high school means you can escape that school subject you didn’t enjoy. Sounds great, right? The downside is that becoming an adult comes with a host of brand new, often tougher lessons and decisions, with consequences to boot. Suddenly, a strong character will be a defining factor in your success, and while a foundation of effective study skills will prove very useful, you’ll have the opportunity to decide what, when, and how you learn. As you transition into adulthood, you’ll also have a whole host of lessons to learn about life, from planning your career trajectory to doing your own tax return. Before long, you’ll discover just how much is left to learn beyond the classroom walls.

Pressure

Whatever your post-high school plans, expect the pressure to rise after graduation. University comes with all of the stresses of completing assessment and work experience, while holding down a regular job and narrowly resisting the urge to spend all of your savings on Mexican food. Meanwhile, making a beeline for the 9-to-5 corporate world leads to the pressure of keeping up with a brand new workload and trying to squeeze in a social life around a new lifestyle. New pressures and stresses are inevitable, but there are plenty of things you can do to make sure you’re managing them in the best way possible.

Look After Yourself

Maintaining a healthy body and mindset makes all the difference when the workload gets heavier. Fight the urge to hole up in your bedroom in the days leading up to an exam or an important project at work - otherwise, you’ll run the risk of burning out. Instead, do your best to keep up your regular activities, make time to see your friends, and block out at least eight hours for sleep every night. There is true power in a power nap, if you use it wisely.

Set Goals

It’s no secret that setting SMART goals is key to achieving great results, in school and in life. Even if you know the power of a well-considered goal, it’s what you do with it that counts. Research has proven that goals are far more likely to be achieved when written down, so don’t leave your potential between your ears. Putting your aspirations down on paper makes you accountable for your actions, and it can also be a great motivator when you need a reminder of what you’re working for.

Utilise Your Support Network

No one makes it through a challenge like high school alone, and if you’re lucky, the supports you called on during the tough times will still be around after you graduate. Don’t be afraid to ask your parents, high school friends, or even past teachers for the advice and support you need as you navigate the path into the future. Post-graduation is also the perfect time to start building new networks, so don’t waste an opportunity to meet someone new. The next person you bump into on campus or in the office could be the one to offer you the right advice, mentorship, or even a job. Every person you meet has the potential to be a great teacher, whether you realise it at the time or not.

Once you’ve mastered the ebb and flow of adult life, you’ll have a chance to enjoy the perks of becoming a more independent person, and there’s a lot to love. It’s not only about escaping the perils of Pythagoras or the struggles of Shakespeare, but also about having the chance to map out your own journey through life.

New Opportunities

While you’re part of the schooling system, it might feel all-consuming, but there’s a far more expansive world waiting for you on the other side. You’ll have the chance to explore avenues you may not have even considered, stretching your capabilities to new heights in the process, and as you do, you’ll discover new parts of yourself. Opportunities are everywhere if you’re willing to seek them out, and your education will make all the difference when the time comes to reach for what you want.

Autonomy

Like many young adults in the making, you’ve probably been waiting for the opportunity to break out and do your own thing since the training wheels came off, and graduation is that chance. After high school, you’ll be able to make your own choices, choose your company, and ultimately decide who you want to be. Once you get over the initial shock of change and new-found freedom, you might just find

Growth

One of the great things about a new situation is that it forces you to improvise, adapt, and overcome new challenges. It will probably feel uncomfortable at first, but the best way out is usually straight through. When you develop your thought processes for handling adversity and change, and turn those processes into habits, you’ll find yourself growing into a more capable, confident person - character traits which will serve you well into adulthood.

As a people person, I am always on the hunt for opportunities where I can meet, interact and make a difference in the lives of those around me. That’s where the incredibly rewarding role as an Academic Personal Trainer with A-Team Tuition comes in!

Making a difference in the lives of others is such a passion for me and I love seeing the changes not only in my students’ academic lives but also, in their personal attitudes and confidence.

When I was a student in high school, I was incredibly unmotivated and disinterested in achieving to the max of my academic potential.

This all changed once I met an English teacher who quite literally changed the course of my academic future. Through becoming engaged and interested in her classes, it had a flow-on effect throughout the rest of my schooling life. One person had planted the seed of desire to work tirelessly at being the best I could be, and this is still impacting me now.

Through endless study, commitment and hard work - I transitioned from a low achieving student lacking motivation to a high achieving, extremely motivated student! This shift in my thinking occurred because of one-persons dedication. Since then, I have felt the call to give back what I received to students who are in the same position I was.

Becoming an Academic Personal Trainer with A-Team has really enabled me to fully immerse myself in helping students be the best that they can be in every aspect of their lives. Through providing help and support with their academics.

Why I Wanted to be an Academic Personal Trainer

Prior to beginning with A-Team I had a desire to work within an environment which facilitated growth, challenged me to be more and was a community of like-minded people.

Tutoring is a job which is truly unique in its way to provide personal growth whilst you simultaneously help those you tutor experience growth in their academic and personal lives.

These benefits have become particularly apparent through my approach to assignments and the ability to look at situations and think in ways which differ to how I would originally think. In my opinion, this can all be attributed to the exposure to different opinions and thoughts you receive whilst tutoring!

Maintaining a consistent, reliable relationship with the students I work with is very important and something which can be easily managed with support from the A-Team staff.

Being a university student allows me to shuffle sessions around to best suit my clients. Vice versa, to suit any busy periods I encounter with exams and assignments. It’s a win-win!!

The structure of the tutoring sessions is an aspect which is truly rewarding as it allows for the comfortable sharing of ideas whilst facilitating a safe, collaborative environment for both the tutor and student.

How Academic Personal Training Can Help Your Child

Through the one-on-one help between student and tutor, it is so amazing to see the students open up and ask questions which they otherwise would not ask in a class environment. To observe the increase in thirst for information and natural curiosity about the world around them is super exciting to be a part of.

The individualised nature of tutoring means that no two sessions are the same. Therefore, providing an awesome opportunity to form friendships with those who you are tutoring. This makes it always exciting to go to work – who wouldn’t want to spend time helping their friends?

The flexible nature of tutoring means that should a student need extra help with a concept its crazy simple to add-on another session which fits with the schedules of all involved. This is a super cool aspect as a tutor with A-Team because of the online booking interface which is easy to use. This means that all the scheduling info and data you need is right at your fingertips, super handy when life gets a bit hectic!

Furthermore, the joy of seeing a student fully grasp a concept after working so hard is truly incredible. Observing the satisfaction and pride that they have not only in themselves but also, in their work never fails to make my heart burst with pride over how hard the student has worked!

Why Becoming an Academic Personal Trainer is a Good Career Move

Being a tutor is a brilliant step towards your future career choice! The ability to gain lasting interpersonal skills and connections is an awesome aspect of the job. Teaching others whilst gaining valuable life experience and skills? Can’t get much better than that!

There are endless opportunities for personal growth within the various facets of tutoring. A prime example of this is the epic time management skills you receive from being a tutor! Learning to fit in and timetable various client’s sessions, personal university work, extra-circulars, and personal activities - is a truly valuable skill.

Alongside time-management skills which you can gain from being a tutor, the ability to understand how to work within a team and with people who have different learning styles from yourself. This understanding can be applied to daily life and future career choices. This is a vital skill which I utilise on a daily basis!

Being an Academic Personal Trainer is a rewarding job beyond what I ever thought possible. To have the opportunity to aid in increasing students understanding of various academic concepts whilst providing both academic and personal support is a truly amazing experience.

To be able to make an impact on someone’s life by doing something which I am passionate about gives me an enormous amount of thankfulness for this awesome opportunity.

Whenever I go to work, it is always a diverse, interesting and exciting experience, no two sessions are ever the same! This is due to having the opportunity to connect with the students and utilise the session to awaken their natural creativeness and curiosity. Consequently, assisting in helping the students achieve the very best of their abilities.

At the end of the day, there are 101 reasons why I became an Academic Personal Trainer with A-Team Tuition. However, the most significant of these is the ability to work and help make a difference within the lives of those you tutor. There is no better experience than absolutely loving going to work each day!

The last school bell of the year rings. You have finally completed Year 11 and an appealing two months of school-free holiday awaits you. Firstly, congratulations on finishing your second last year of school! You are now one step closer to the long-awaited graduation – exciting, isn’t it? While this is surely a prime time for some well-deserved celebration and relaxation, getting prepared for a smooth transition from Year 11 to Year 12 will definitely come in handy in your final year of school.

A couple of simple steps and you will see Year 12 fly by like an arrow as you make the most of your last schooling year! Learn more about the transition from year 11 to year 12 and how both matter when it comes to ATAR scores.

1. Treasure Your Year 11 Notes

If you have had a peek at your Year 12 subject textbooks, you will see topics that are almost identical to those studied in Year 11. Senior subject topics are introduced in Year 11 and expanded in Year 12. You will be studying the same topics, just with more advanced content and to a more profound level – this will apply to most core subjects. Year 11 to Year 12 is about building on what you already learned. Don't chuck your old books, they'll be worth their weight in gold!

The good news about this is, you get to re-use all your Year 11 notes! Think of Year 11 as a foundation year in preparation for Year 12; it contains all the formative assessments while Year 12 is comprised of summative assessments.

That said, the notes that helped you through Year 11 will be of equal advantage to you in Year 12, especially when you need to refer to the basics in order to understand more challenging concepts.

To give yourself an extra boost, scan through your Year 11 notes occasionally throughout the summer holidays to refresh your memory on what you have learnt in the past year. This way, you will be all ready-to-go in Year 12 without having to revise the old concepts after school has begun.

2. Make Use Of Holiday Sessions

What better way to excel in Year 12 than to gain the advantage of being few steps ahead throughout the whole year?

Begin with requesting for holiday sessions with your tutor, who will be more than eager to help those of their students who seek to achieve above and beyond.

For your holiday sessions, select 2 to 3 of your strongest or most liked subjects and start the respective Term 1 syllabus. As you complete the first few topics that will be taught in Term 1 during the holidays, the content shall sit deeper in your mind when you learn it a second time in school.

Not only will this ensure you have a more profound understanding of the content than the rest of your cohort, you are now one term ahead of schedule in that it allows you and your tutor to begin Term 2 work at the end of Term 1 as well as during your break in between.

Consequently, throughout Year 12, you would have learnt the subjects you have selected twice, so that you become even stronger in your strongest subjects.

I also recommended for you to choose your most liked subjects for this purpose because you wouldn’t want to get sick of subjects you do not necessarily enjoy by studying them over the holidays, right?

Don’t get me wrong, holidays are still a time for you to relax, travel, catch up with friends, or stay home to binge watch TV series all day!

In view of that, your holiday tutoring sessions can take place either weekly or fortnightly, and easily scheduled according to your personal timetable, as our Academic Personal Trainers are usually pretty flexible and accommodating during the school holidays!

3. Set Goals And Follow A Plan

Almost every achievement is a result of a goal. Nevertheless, your goals do not have to be result-specific; it may not be realistic to set the goal of achieving an OP 1 when you do not have a plan that works towards this goal.

Hence, it is ideal to set goals that are attainable hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly. For instance:

Finish Your Maths homework in an hour without any distractions

Complete 300 words of your assignment by the end of the day

Go to a consultation with your subject teacher at least once a week

Finish reading the book you are studying in English by the end of the month

Such goals should not only be set when Year 12 begins, but also in the holidays during your transition between Year 11 to Year 12 (though they can be much more laid back!).

If you struggle to construct a realistic timetable during your holidays, simply consult your Academic Personal Trainer to give you a hand!

Personally, I like to utilise the sticky notes on my laptop as my planner, reason being I can easily edit them in the event that I am left with extra time to accomplish more or when plans change.

For those of you who prefer writing your goals down however, there are a variety of aesthetic planners available in bookshops and gift shops for you to choose from.

I recommend something handy which you can carry around with you so to ensure you will always stay on track with your plans. You could also have a look at the Neurobooks developed by A Team for a more content-specific planner.

By crafting an elaborate timetable in which you will follow diligently throughout Year 12, you are taking baby steps towards achieving your bigger, long-term goal.

Such goal-setting will also warrant a smooth transition as you have composed a clear path you wish to follow, which already places you ahead of the year!

4. Solidify Relationships With Teachers And Classmates

While academic goals and achievements are crucial in your final year of school, good relationships with those whom you will see 7 hours a day, 5 days a week are equally essential.

Imagine having spent most of your life with the same classmates and the same teachers who have been around since Prep, and now you have reached your last ever schooling year – you’d want to make the most out of it!

Firstly, cherish your high-school friendships as they may last a lifetime.

One of my best memories from Year 12 was the fun we had when my friends and I assisted one another in completing homework, group presentations and assessments.

This consisted of late-night calls, sleepovers and staying back after school to brainstorm ideas - you’d also be surprised how much you may learn from your classmates!

Secondly, develop close relationships with your teachers. Why? Check out our blog “Why being a teacher’s pet is so cool” to be amazed by the many benefits that come with good relationships with your teachers!

In addition, the numbered days you have together will make this coming year the most unforgettable year.

All in all, by solidifying relationships with your teachers and classmates, you will guarantee yourself a fun and rewarding time in Year 12!

5. Think Ahead

It is no doubt that Year 12 will be your busiest year of school. Amidst all the impending assessments, you have carnivals, house events, ATAR preparation, formal, and a number of other different school activities!

However, you shall not neglect to ponder about some huge decisions that you have to soon confront.

For example, begin thinking about the degree you would like to study in University, and set a goal for yourself to work towards accordingly. If you're worried about making it to the final cut, now is the time to lock in your study goals for year twelve.

Alternatively, deliberate your plans after graduation - whether it is a gap year, or straight into a career, you have set out for yourself.

It could be anything at all – competing in performing arts, joining a sports team, becoming a tutor with A Team Tuition, or moving to another country for a couple of months – you are in control of your own decisions.

Again, you won’t likely go wrong with an elaborate plan set out for the year after Year 12.

I am sure you will consider these steps while easing your way into your final year of school. Going from year 11 to year 12 is an exciting challenge and one you're ready to take on. We know you've got this! – A Team Tuition wishes you the best of luck. Exciting times ahead!

Do you sometimes struggle to stay focused in class or while completing assignments at home? Don’t worry if you do, just keep reading to learn some study hacks!

For those of you who have already come up with some of your own, there’s no harm in exploring some new ones, maybe you can compile all the effective study hacks and share them with your friends!

Contrary to the common belief, studying doesn’t have to be hard. In fact, there are a couple of hacks to help make the process more fun and enjoyable.

1. Jazz Up Your Study Notes

Study notes do not necessarily have to be in plain black writing against white paper. Try different sized markers, or glittery pens in all sorts of different colours.

Use them against coloured papers or cardboard papers in different sizes. Cut your notes into different shapes to differentiate between subtopics. Think of it as if you are completing an art project.

Just think, wouldn’t it be convenient to read notes about the cardiovascular system from a red coloured paper cut into a shape of a heart? Or the plant cells from a green coloured paper in the shape of a leaf? Study hacks are all about what helps you study. If this is a help, then start cutting!

At A Team, we encourage creating your own Neurobooks (or you can follow our template!). It is the process in which you create such notes that will enhance your memory of them when pressured by limited time and tense atmosphere in exams.

Besides, drawing diagrams can also be extremely helpful. For instance, sketch a chain of molecules in a compound using blue coloured pencil, and then associate that compound with water (H2O). Easy, right?

Another creative style of note-taking is drawing mind maps. They quite literally help you in connecting the dots to improve your ability to identify relationships and form links within the content you have learnt – which is often an important criterion in your assessments.

You might also want to consult the study pyramid from our CAS manual to help you in planning your notes!

These are just a few ways you can make effective study notes

2. Your Personal Memory Aids

This is a little study hack I use to remember complicated facts. All you have to do is take an important word that represents the concept you are trying to learn, and then embed it in your mind by relating it to something personal, or an experience you’ve had.

For example, there may be a concept that you learnt for the first time in Science, and one particular word from that concept sounds like the last name of one of your relatives; so, when revising that particular concept, think of your relative –then the word – then the concept.

Whenever you need to apply that concept in your work, you will automatically go through that same process of jogging your memory and eventually, this newly learnt concept will come straight to you.

This may be a little complicated to start with, but you can associate any content with anything at all, whether it is a Disney character, a type of food you had, or a word from a different language.

In the long run, your mind will begin to make subconscious pairing between your personal experiences and the relevant material. This form of memory aid works differently for everyone, so it becomes exclusive to you and your understanding only.

3. Be The Teacher

After jazzing up all your notes and embedding them into your mind, the most effective way of finding out if you actually know the content is by teaching it to your classmates.

It is almost double revision, as you repeat what you’ve learnt by saying it out loud to your friends.

Not only is this beneficial to your ‘students’, it allows you to discover what you know or don’t know best, so that you can do some extra revision if need be. A good way of teaching is to incorporate questions and answers.

Who doesn’t love a good trivia time? Take turns answering each other’s questions as a form of test before your actual test.

Sometimes, getting an answer wrong may just heighten your recollection of it when you come a cross something similar and recall that you have experienced this in the pre-test with your friends

4. Turn Your Study Session Into A Musical

Remember how I said studying can be fun?

Sing your notes!

Ever had a dream as a kid to be a superstar? Well now’s your chance, you’ve got your own lyrics, all that’s left now is to create your tune.

This may sound a little odd, but give it a go, it works!

Simply sing your notes out loud (or quietly) in your own tunes or the tunes of your favourite songs, it’ll surely stick after repeating this for a couple of times.

Again, it’s the process of accomplishing this that will augment your memory. Practise makes perfect!

How is this helpful, you may ask?

When in the exam, you can hum quietly or mentally to evoke the sound of your own voice singing the notes in order to recall them.

However, if you classify yourself as not much of a singer, simply reading your study notes out loud for a number of times is just as effective for an aural learner.

The idea is for you to transfer all (or most) that you have written down into your brain, so do whatever works best for you!

To give you a hand, explore our learning style blogs to find out the most effective method of studying that is best suited to you!

5. Study Hacks mean Study Early

This may go without saying but getting a head start is as important as the quality of your study sessions.

It is never ideal to study the entire term’s worth of work over 2 days.

Carefully plan out your study routine at the beginning of the term to ensure you have time for other curriculum's.

This way, you won’t lose sleep from cramming all your revision into the day before the exam and subsequently experiencing the domino effect of forming other bad habits such as last-minute assignments.

By spreading out the workload to have a more balanced life, you might even find yourself left with some extra time to revise some unfamiliar concepts twice.

If you are struggling to plan ahead, consult your Academic Personal Trainer to draw up a timeline that is suited to your schedule and seek to follow that for the rest of the term.

You could also have a look at the study pyramid as it breaks down exactly what you need to do to thrive in your studies!

6. Exercise To Exercise Your Brain

Some of you may want to dedicate every minute before the exam to studying (I feel the same way sometimes), but, rather than bombarding your brain with information, why not try something more refreshing?

Exercising strengthens the quality of studying by releasing endorphins that improve your brain productivity.

You may feel more reinvigorated after a workout, and your brain may also be readier to receive more information.

For more details on the relationship between exercising and improving your memory and thinking skills visit the Harvard Health blog linked
here!

It is defiantly a productive form of break that I strongly recommend you utilise to your own benefit.

To conclude, I have personally found these study hacks to be effective in lightening the process of studying, but I shall leave it up to you to discover how creative you can get!

Our philosophy encompasses the idea that intelligence is not a determinative factor when it comes to a child’s success at school.

At A Team Tuition, our tutors hold the mindset that success is achieved through the processes you follow and the importance you place on steps that need to be taken to pave the pathway to success. The Pye brothers are not unfamiliar with this process and both brothers have received significant rewards from tutoring in doing so.

For student Connor Pye, the youngest of the two, the hurdles blocking his road to success were learning how to implement the correct study strategies and minimising the stress he placed upon himself. Connor was matched with Academic Personal Trainer, Rhianna Lovegrove, who is not unfamiliar to seeing student success firsthand, especially within this family.

Rhianna was part of the support team that allowed Connor’s older brother Tegan, to achieve an OP 1 equivalent and reach his ultimate goal of obtaining direct entry into medicine. Connor has now followed suit, winning Dux Proximate Accessit (Runner Up) for his year level and obtaining a Golden Palm (straight A grades in all of his subjects)!

Connor was initially introduced to tutoring with A Team Tuition through his older brother. After a few sessions with Connor, Rhianna realised that it wasn’t his content knowledge that was lacking, but rather the organisation-based strategies that he wasn’t employing.

“Connor is a super intelligent young man and never really made any major mistakes in his work,” Rhianna recalled. “It was more that he needed to learn the processes of planning, researching and organizing his thoughts, especially in English.”

Rhianna immediately began working on structuring Connor’s thoughts and writing. Through the implementation of a Neurobook, the pair began the process of tracking and simplifying Connor’s thoughts and ideas so that they flowed. In particular, Rhianna noticed that Connor, like his brother Tegan, struggled with his vocabulary.

“I noticed that he, like his brother, used big words to make things sound good instead of being concise and to the point. I figured this out by getting him to show me his work and write his ideas down in the first couple of sessions.”

Rhianna firstly focused on going through Connor’s work one paragraph at a time to help summarise his class notes. Another key strategy that she used after realising Connor’s dominant learning language was aural, was ditching paper and pen and using discussion to teach. Rhianna found that Connor responded well to have his ideas questioned, rather than directly told to him.

This method allowed Connor to further understand the process used to help him develop his own ideas.

When Connor first started tutoring, his only expectation was to obtain better grades and improve his academics. Not only did Connor achieve this, but he also learnt how to manage his anxiety.

“The biggest difference in my life now that I have tutoring would probably be that I now have a sense of relief. I feel as if I know what I’m doing and how to do it.”

This has in turn reduced Connor’s hesitancy to begin tasks, which he notes as one of the biggest reasons why he wasn’t fulfilling his potential as a student.

Connor’s mum Tracy-Kim has noticed a significant shift in Connor’s approach to his study as well. It only took a few weeks for the different strategies to have an effect and allow Connor to gain the confidence and surety in his approach he needed to excel in his studies.

“Connor is more relaxed and confident about his learning – he even handles “feedback” from teachers in a less personal and more productive way.”

She mentions that this has resulted in a cumulative effect.

“Everything changed – grades improved, study methods improved, focus changed, and their engagement in their own outcomes shifted.

All of this wouldn’t happen if it wasn’t for the support network surrounding Connor that was allowing him to work to his best potential. Teaching students to utilise their support networks is one A Team Tuition’s key focuses here. This helps create an environment based around continual learning and exploration as the student builds a network around them full of individuals who will help that student invest in their best interests.

Whilst Connor learnt to trust the processes from Rhianna, she too learnt a lot from tutoring Connor.

“Connor and his family constantly serve as a reminder for me that there are some incredible upcoming minds that can truly change the world and that the power of a supporting family is honestly beyond words.”

This sentiment is mirrored from Tracy-Kim, who mentions that the boys’ tutors “have in many ways become part of our family and we value and enjoy their input.”

This has helped Tracy-Kim whose main goal was to find continual support to match Connor’s motivation.

“He was committed to being an “A” student and so my husband (his step father) and I wanted to support that aspiration.”

Connor is equally proud of his achievements and it has helped him believe in his own capabilities.

“Tutoring has allowed me to soar in all aspects of school. A Team Tuition doesn’t just focus on getting you that A. They also want to teach you how to study and how to get that A by yourself. Now, I feel that I have the skills necessary to thoroughly complete assignments and prepare for exams more independently.”

Rhianna and Connor are currently focusing on not only maintaining his only grades, but successfully sitting Connor’s SATs so that he can gain entry into Harvard University or follow in his brother’s footsteps and study medicine. Either way, we can’t wait to see what the future holds for this dream team!

When it comes to students, A Team Tuition has seen absolutely every type – from the successful, to the struggling, to the unmotivated, to the confident.

However, nothing could prepare us for the absolute bundle of joy that is Ruby Biasin.

Ruby – who is currently a Year 8 student at Emmanuel College – started tutoring with A Team Tuition in Term 3 of 2017. Unlike other students, who may often start tutoring worried about the process or concerned about their capability to succeed, Ruby was overjoyed to start tutoring.

“I was so excited to start tutoring!” Ruby said. “I really wanted to learn new skills to improve my grades.”

One of our superstar tutors, Ellie McInerney, was matched to Ruby – and was immediately enchanted by how lovely she was.

The wonderful miss Ellie McInerney, Ruby's tutor!

“Ruby is a fantastic student. She is the type of child who asks what they can do to improve, and really wanted to try hard. I believe it was her determination which made her really flourish.”

And straight from the outset, Ruby put all of her heart and soul into doing whatever she could to achieve better grades. Whatever advice Ellie gave her, she took to heart immediately.

“Ellie is the best tutor I’ve ever had! I have had about four [from other companies]. She makes tutoring an absolute blast!”

Ruby moulded her learning according to the Creating A Students program that Ellie utilized, which included changing her classroom structure and seating, the way she asked questions, and her assessment planning process.

For Ellie, though, the main focus was providing the perfect environment for Ruby to feel supported, cared for, and comfortable.

“When I first started tutoring Ruby she would often say things like ‘Well you know that because you are smart’ or ‘I’m not smart enough for this’ or ‘I’ll never know everything like you’,” Ellie remarked.

“I think that she saw teachers and perhaps past tutors as these amazing fountains of knowledge and put them on a pedestal which she believed she would never be able to reach. I would often ensure Ruby of how smart she is, and that I am no more intelligent than she is, I’m just older!”

“Even when there were things that she could improve in her writing, I would always say what was great first and then give some suggestions as to how she could make the other part stronger, so she didn’t feel defeated by criticism.”

The relationship that Ellie worked to develop had a profound impact on Ruby, who now has an obviously joyful attitude attached to her learning and a deep affection for her tutor, who she hilariously calls “Ell Dog”.

When asked about what the hardest part of tutoring is for her, Ruby was adamant that there was only one thing:

“The hardest part about tutoring is that sometimes I get hungry!”

“I do extracurricular activities before tutoring so we have to tutor late – but tutoring hasn’t been hard besides this, because Ell Dog is the bomb dot com!”

Ellie herself feels that tutoring Ruby has been one of the most joyful and fulfilling experiences she’s had since joining A Team.

“Ruby just handled the experience so wonderfully, especially for someone so young!”

“Her key turning point was in Term Four with an English feature article. She had spent so much time working on this assignment in her own time and getting tips from the teachers. She used the tutoring sessions to perfect her assignment, rather than trying to write it in sessions – and I believe it was this great organization that really let Ruby flourish, and move from a B to an A+.”

“Ruby and I also have a great relationship and I think that a real bond with a tutor can help so much,” Ellie remarked.

Ruby herself agreed, and joyfully noted that ‘Ell Dog’ had come one of her best friends.

“I really believe Ruby just need the confidence from an outside source and a push in motivation,” said Ellie.

“I believe that Ruby really needed someone to believe in her and encourage her. Her intrinsic motivation and dedication to her studies is extremely admirable,” Ellie noted. “She’s a really busy girl who does a lot of dancing, but yet is always organized and prepared for tutoring.”

“I think often people talk about how over committed they are or that they don’t have time for things (especially school!), but I think Ruby is a great example that you can have your cake and eat it too!”

“She’s such a vivacious student, and her dedication to her studies and excitement in her increasing grades is such a prime example of what I love about tutoring!”

At A Team Tuition, we know that establishing healthy study habits as a foundation for learning is not simply ‘important’ – it is absolutely vital for developing success.

This is especially important for junior high school students when transitioning into their senior years. With QCS, OPs, increasing content difficulty, and the added strain of an ever-expanding workload looming, students need to feel confident about their learning processes and academic strategies to be successful even when under pressure.

For Sam Robinson, nearing the end of his junior school journey at The Southport School (TSS) brought this need into the foreground, and his mother Kim soon jumped at the opportunity to provide Sam with a supportive mentoring system.

“Sam was finding in Grade 9 that the work got progressively harder. He was struggling with how to revise and study effectively, so I thought that A Team would create a more mentoring environment where he could learn these skills,” Kim remarked.

Sam himself admitted that he regarded school as a place to socialize and hang out with his friends. However, the entry of A Team Tuition tutor Nick Faulks helped change that drastically.

“When I first began tutoring Sam, I knew I had encountered a kid with tremendous academic ability,” Nick remarked.

“He struck me as expressive, intelligent, witty, and sarcastic, but he just didn’t seem to see what the big fuss was all about with school!”

Most importantly, Nick realized that Sam need help developing essential skills and learning processes in a way that was best suited to his personal needs.

“What many teachers had told Sam was his ‘lack of ability to focus’, I knew was just a misguided expression of energy, enthusiasm and humor present in most young men attending school.”

“Sam may struggle with paying attention and pushing himself to focus on content he does not personally take a liking to,” Nick admitted.

“But by crafting a fun, yet effective learning environment that is suited to his visual learning style, that struggle to focus transforms into a pure drive to achieve.”

Adapting Sam’s learning environment to his specific learning language was a pivotal part of educating him on how to learn smart.

Sam himself mentioned this:

“One thing that I’ve learnt from Nick that I’ll keep with me forever is that process is the most important factor in achieving success. You can work incredibly hard, but without having a clear process to follow along the way, all your hard work can go to waste.”

“I know now that hard work is important, but that working smart is just as important as working hard!”

Evidently, the fact that Sam’s learning process was now better suited to him and allowed him to work smart did not eliminate the need for working hard. That is one thing that students often forget – and one thing that, even with a tutor, is not always easy!

Sam himself found this quite difficult at first, especially before he was able to see results.

“I’d never even really spent time studying after school before, let alone writing several pages of summary notes about my weekly topics and answering in-depth questions in time that I normally spent watching YouTube and playing video games.”

“Adjusting to the level of intensity of having to do any work outside of school was tough, but it has taught me a lot along the way,” Sam noted.

And his hard, smart work definitely paid off – Sam ended up achieving his very first A+ in English after a few months of tutoring with Nick.

“Nick is the best thing Sam could have hoped for,” noted Kim. “He pushed Sam to achieve his potential without being overtly bossy. He is reliable and courteous, which helps as Sam has gained no only a tutor, but a role model as well.”

“Along the way all the hard work seemed tedious and challenging,” Sam remarked, “but in the end it was worth it to achieve an amazing result.”

“I feel like Nick has helped me through a lot of hard things and work, and although he sets some pretty high standards, I know that what he has shown me as a tutor helps me manage all my responsibilities – at both school and at home.”

Having Nick as a tutor has provided relief as well to Sam’s family by helping to remove any stress or anxiety, as Kim herself noted:

“There’s no more need for me to constantly check if Sam is up to date with everything, as Nick has taken that burden from me and ensures that everything is under control.”

“It was important to us that Sam was in a good study routine before he started senior school, and that goal has certainly been achieved.”

“I feel that I was very lucky to contribute to Sam’s life so far,” Nick himself notes. “The most significant thing I think I have contributed to Sam’s life so far is a new outlook on life, and a new approach to school.”

“Teaching young men, in particular, the importance of taking ownership of what you do, accountability for what you have done and responsibility for what the future holds is something that schools can struggle to instill in young people these days due to time and curriculum constraints,” Nick remarked, “and this is where I feel privileged to be able to fill the gap!”

Sam himself is incredibly proud of his own progress, and has a new spring in his step.

“I feel positively about school now as somewhere where I can now go to focus and learn, as well as reinforce the process that guides my academic success.”

“Having tutoring has changed my view of the world. I now look for opportunities to make my self accountable and responsible even in situations where things are not ideal.”

Every year with A Team Tuition, we see the seemingly ‘impossible’ become possible. We see students who defy all odds – their previous grades, people’s opinions, and limits placed on them – to achieve to the highest possible level.

Skylah Rambold is one of those students.

Despite the beliefs of others around her and extreme adversity, Skylah has risen above all and achieved the impossible: moving from a failing student to one of the top 5% students in her entire school cohort.

Skylah started the year on an E grade for Maths, and was placed in the lowest level class for Year 9. But despite the restrictions placed on her, Skylah refused to be boxed in and worked incredibly hard to achieve better.

Through her own hard work and resilience in attending weekly mathematic study sessions with her teacher, she moved from an E to a C- within the term. It was at this point that A Team Tuition began to advertise the chance of a lifetime: a tutoring scholarship, valued at $5000, focused solely on providing Skylah with the exact academic strategies and support that she was needing.

“Hayden came to one of my year level assemblies, and he explained what it was all about and how it could help me. It was the perfect opportunity to get everything together,” Skylah recalled.

“I’m really motivated and I just want to achieve. I was just missing having someone else around who could see the potential in me.”

Skylah’s motivation was obvious in both her application and her interview, which quickly led to her receiving the scholarship alongside fellow student Waide Carson.

She was soon placed with one of A Team Tuition’s star tutors, Libbie Rowley-James, with whom she very quickly formed a very close bond.

“Having Libbie as a tutor was so great. She was so good at listening, and understanding how I was doing.”

Libbie herself was gobsmacked at how incredible Skylah’s attitude towards school was, and how desperate she was to learn.

“Skylah was one of the most grateful students I’ve ever met, which made her one of the best students to work with because she hung on to every word I said. It was so courageous of her to give me that trust straight away.”

“I went through such similar things as Skylah in Grade 9, in that I was in school knowing that I could do better, but that it was going to require some hard work and effort to get there. And I’m so proud that she was willing to do that, from the very start.”

It wasn’t long before Skylah began to see a difference in her schooling, particularly when it came to the way she felt before exams and assignments.

“I had a lot of trouble with confidence, and I felt really insecure. Before tutoring, when I was in class, I used to cover my work because I was embarrassed about it.”

“I was too embarrassed to speak up and ask questions in class, because I didn’t want people to think that I was dumb.”

“But after a while, I started to realise that I was understanding everything so much better. We had a tutoring session before I went in for an exam – and while doing all the revision, I realised that from the start of the unit, all the way to the end, there was just a major difference.”

“I felt like I knew everything. I’d never felt so confident before, and I was so ready to get into class and get everything down.”

Libbie notes that this was definitely because of Skylah’s own attitude and motivation.

“Skylah was beaming with potential, and that was the catalyst. While she may not have had the exact strategies, and may have been going through some tough things that held her back, she absolutely had the right attitude. She was motivated, and eager to learn, eager to achieve.”

“That eagerness and motivated attitude was what allowed her to grab onto the strategies I taught her, which in turn allowed her to jump so high up in her grades.”

After only six weeks of tutoring, Skylah had skyrocketed from achieving C- grades in Mathematics, to now achieving straight A’s in almost all of her subjects – even subjects she wasn’t receiving tutoring in!

She was finally inching closer and closer to being able to pursue her dream career: being a paramedic.

“I’ve always wanted to be a paramedic – just from past experiences, I’m really motivated and committed to helping people.”

“That’s why it was so good to have Libbie as an example of how to help someone best – I feel like a lot of the lessons I learnt from her I didn’t even realise until I began to do them myself.”

Now that the year is over, Skylah is on top of the world with her results – as are her family members, who are incredibly passionate about continuing to see her succeed.

“I’ve watched this scholarship change Skylah, and I’ve also seen it change the lives of her parents,” mentions Libbie.

“They’re able to look at their daughter and see how she can achieve, and I believe that’s really been such a positive impact on their lives.”

“It’s so nice to see Skylah and her family be in a better place, as better versions of themselves.”

Skylah will therefore be staying on with A Team Tuition, and continue to receive private in-home tutoring for her later years.

“I’ve just loved tutoring so much – I don’t know what I would do without it now,” said Skylah. “It’s just so life-changing.”

“I just want to keep doing the best that I can, and keep achieving well, so I can reach my goals and make everyone who gave me this opportunity proud.”

Make sure you read our interview with our other scholarship winner, Waide Carson, about his Project Limitless journey!
Our A Team Tuition tutors often remark that one of the best – if not the best – parts about working with students is seeing the transformation that they go through. For Troy Balvert and Aleksander “Aleks” Everstets, that transformation was accompanied by something even better – a genuine, true friendship.

Aleks first came to A Team Tuition looking to not only improve his grades, but also to find his own personal motivation. With two older sisters who achieved very highly at school, Aleks needed to make his own place in education, and find his own passion for his work.

“He wasn’t making mistakes as such,” his tutor Troy commented. “He is a very confident young man, but in his academics he didn’t think he was smart enough.”

Because of this, Aleks refrained from trying too hard at school, aiming simply to pass and focused on getting into a job where he “didn’t have to use his brain,” remarked Troy.

However, Troy immediately worked on building a friendship between them, and set the standard of expectations for Aleks’ work.

“We just talked, hung out, spun some good yarns and really got to know each other well. I think we are both similar, in personality, how we are very close with our family, and how our older sibling/s are very intelligent, and we may not feel like we were at their academic level.”

“We just clicked. We get along so well that I was able to have a position almost like an older brother for Aleks – someone he could be comfortable around, but also someone he could respect and learn from. I personally think having a tutor who believes in you and gives you that confidence is helpful. I made sure he knew that I believed in him and he could achieve good grades, and that I was going to always push him to get the best results he could. His parents were also on board, which was good too.”

“I think I was able to achieve this transformation because I could see a lot of myself in him – but also that I told him we can achieve some great results and that he must trust me. Once that understanding and respect was established, we focused on sorting out some structure into his work.”

Their friendship was a profound relationship that established a solid foundation for their work. For Aleks, it meant that he wanted to work ten times harder to achieve highly.

“The best part about having Troy as my tutor is that he isn’t just a tutor - he is one of my best mates. That made me want to work even harder, because I don’t ever want to disappoint my best mate.”

Troy and Aleks’ mateship paved the way for them to establish Aleks’ primary learning language, and tailor his learning process around it. It was almost obvious to see that Aleks was an auditory learner, due to his verbal responsiveness with Troy.

Troy then formatted his tutoring around verbal exercises, which he mixed in with typical visual learning exercises such as note-taking. This developed Aleksander’s understanding to a point where he began to excel in a classroom environment as well.

Aleks’ hard work paid off incredibly – originally sitting on straight D’s in his subjects, Aleks is now achieving a straight A and B+ average in his classes!

The change first occurred on a Maths tests, where Aleks moved from a D- to a B. The change was profound, and saw Aleks completely gobsmacked.

“When I first started tutoring I didn't think it would work at all, because I had never passed a subject in my life of schooling!”

“But there it was! I got a good mark, and I was so excited that I could tell Troy that our hard work paid off.”

Of course, Troy cannot speak highly enough of his student.

“Aleks has changed my mindset on life and how life is fun, it should be enjoyed, and every moment should be laughing and one to remember.”

“I’m so proud of him, and his future goals. He is now doing a Diploma of business next year, has set goals for all his subjects, planning investments in stocks and shares; but most importantly, he now wants to go to QUT, and study to become an accountant.”

“He will go far, I’m sure of it.”

For Aleks, his tutoring journey has completely changed his motivation level, and helped skyrocket him to success.

“I feel so much more accomplished when I study hard and get good marks,” said Aleks.

“I believe in myself much more academically. Because of that, I’ve changed my career endeavors completely!”

“Troy has taught me to believe in myself, which is something I will keep with me forever.”

A Team Tuition’s greatest pride and joy shows when a student finally finds the missing key needed to unlock their success. For our latest superstar, Jordan Abbott, that key was found through his partnership with his tutor Jade Bates - one of our most incredible and longest-standing tutors.

Jordan’s journey was quite different to what one would typically expect from a tutoring experience. A typical stigma around tutoring is that it’s only for students who don’t understand their classroom content – students who are often stereotyped as having lower intelligence.

At A Team Tuition, we know that this stereotype is nowhere close to true. It is not a student’s intelligence that determines their results, but rather their resilience, dedication to work, and the processes they use to understand their schoolwork.

This was exactly the case with Jordan. His knowledge and understanding of concepts was not a problem – according to Jade, his intelligence was quite high.

“In fact, the toughest thing about tutoring Jordan was that he was very intelligent,” claimed Jade, “and his subjects were quite advanced – often covering subjects I myself had not done before!”

However, Jordan struggled to adapt his knowledge into unfamiliar contexts, particularly questions that involved modelling and problem solving.

Therefore, the key to taking Jordan’s understanding to the next level was figuring out his preferred learning style – what we, at A Team, call a learning language.

A student’s learning language helps determined how they best take in information, and help translate it into a solid, all-round understanding. There are three types, all of which are analysed and explained in our learning language blog series.

Jade identified Jordan as an aural learner – someone who learns best through discussion and verbally fueled methods.

“Our sessions had a very conversational style, where I asked him a lot of questions to verbally draw out his understanding,” noted Jade.

Once Jordan had mastered his ability to verbally express his knowledge, the sessions shifted to focus on developing Jordan’s written responses.

“I would ask him to explain why if he wasn’t satisfied with his work, and helped him create checklist to help him reflect on the comprehensiveness of his work.”

Through doing this, Jade not only helped Jordan perfect doing his work through his preferred learning language, but also helped him develop in other learning languages such as visual learning. As we’ve noted before, this is when a student truly begins to dominate their studies.

Jade additionally focused on supporting Jordan in developing his organisational skills, goal setting, and personal evaluation – skills that are not only pivotal in school, but are necessary for any avenue of life!

The results from Jade’s mentorship and Jordan’s dedication were astounding. In just over six months, Jordan improved from a C in both Math B and Biology, to a respective B and A grade – finally achieving an A grade in almost all of his assignments – even for subjects he hadn’t been tutored in!

“Not only did his grades improve, but it was obvious that Jordan’s motivation and dedication to work enhanced, along with his confidence. He took more initiative with his assignments and study,” remarked Jade.

For his parents, the improvement in Jordan’s productivity and proactive attitude was the most impressive. Knowing that he was now personally taking steps to truly fulfill his potential relieved any stress they had about monitoring his progress and effort.

That was Jade’s biggest goal in their tutoring journey – to set Jordan up for the rest of his life.

“I hope that I have helped Jordan to develop skills that he can take with him throughout his life – not only to advance in university, but also to be able to communicate clearly and articulately to those in his professional life.”

Jade realised the important of these skills through her own experiences: she has come to the end of her university degree, and is now moving on from A Team Tuition to practice as an occupational therapist.

And, of course, Jordan has made a significant impact on Jade and her journey ahead.

“In tutoring Jordan, I was required to really step up, expand my knowledge and think creatively about how to be of most benefit to him,” said Jade.

“The ability to enhance my alertness and think creatively to overcome challenges will definitely be an asset when working as an Occupational Therapist!”

Together through their tutoring sessions, Jade and Jordan have made an incredible impact on one another. Such incredible change all started with a single moment:

“The transformation point for Jordan, I believe, was actually before he started tutoring, when he decided that he wanted to apply himself, get a tutor, and excel in school. This change in mindset, which led to my presence, inspired gradual growth in motivation, confidence, and grades,” said Jade.

Jade’s focus was not on teaching Jordan to help him ‘learn’ new content, but to guide him into a new understanding. The focus was on helping him harness how he best learns, so that he has the power to apply his process to any environment.

His dedication to improving his grades and attitude towards school was additionally obvious in Jordan's approach to tutoring. He never willingly missed a single session with Jade, and was constantly committed, out of his own volition, to doing the work needed to propel him towards succeed.

And that is the point where students begin to transform – when they make the decision to start their journey towards changing their way of thinking, learning, and living.

Sometimes a big part of our tutor’s work is to get a student and their family to this point; to help them see that they have limitless potential.

For Jordan, making this choice himself – combined with Jade’s guidance – has allowed him to strive towards his goal of gaining entrance into Biomedical Science at Griffith University. We here at A Team Tuition firmly believe in his ability and hope to see him achieve this dream.

We wish him all the best on his journey!
