Every single child we’ve worked with who is underperforming at school is underperforming for a reason. That reason surprised us. It’s not a lack of smarts. Let’s be clear. We have never met a child we couldn’t help to improve. Every child we’ve worked with has had the potential to reach greater academic heights. It’s not about extracurricular activities. It’s not about whether your school is less amazing than the next school. What makes a student underperform?

Every single student, out of thousands of students, had one thing holding them back: Mindset

That means that every single student underperforming at school has the potential to raise their grades. How can you tell if your child is underperforming at school? Do any of these scenarios sound familiar?

The Distracted/Unmotivated Mindset

Your teen sits down to start an assignment and then “bing” the phone notifies her of a TikTok she must watch. So you take her phone. And that goes down a treat. Then, you find her in her room, not studying, she’s going through drawers looking for something. So you sit her back at her desk. Finally, she even attempts to tidy her room as a procrastination tool. You don’t rush to stop her… because you know, you’re witnessing a miracle in front of your very eyes… but eventually, she MUST do the assignment. She’s distracting herself. Putting off work. It’s not that she’s lazy. Distraction is actually an issue of poor confidence. She’s trying to communicate that she’s so unsure of her work that she’d rather clean her room than attempt it.

How we change the “Distracted/Unmotivated” mindset

We get to the root of your child’s confidence issues and remove the barriers they’re facing. By creating more engaging lessons that help your child to break down the workload and to explore it on their terms, they find the confidence to take ownership of their work. This looks different for every child. For some kids, it’s about turning the workload into a game of sorts, where there is reward for discovering steps to tackle the subject matter. For others, it’s about a change of scene, where they are free to move around and take in some sunshine while they work. For some kids, it’s about improving their study strategy. It’s very, very rarely about closing them up in a dull room!

What does it mean in practice?

Ethan was a B student. Not bad. Doing OK. But his mother worried about his lack of motivation and she believed he wasn’t reaching his full potential. Tutor Brit took Ethan away from the standard desk set up and attacked his workload with beanbags and whiteboards. She let him lead the way in learning. She introduced fun and interactive ways for him to break down the workload – so he could focus on it, without distraction. Ethan is now an “A” student and the recipient of the coveted Principal’s Award.

The “I Can’t Do It” Mindset

Your teen tells you, “I just don’t understand it. I can’t do it.” This quickly transforms into “It’s stupid, when will I even need this in the future?” Pretty soon, an underperforming student is a failing student because they feel that they’re just not bright enough to understand the curriculum. We see this a lot in students who are heavily skewed to either left or right brain learning. If your child thrives at Art and English, every maths exam feels like a big opportunity to fail.

How we change the “I Can’t Do It” mindset

Our tutors first address their learning language. The three primary learning languages dictate how well your student can take in different information. If your child is an aural learner, who retains information through reading and listening, a sheet of formulas can feel like an utter impossibility. So, our first step is to understand how your child learns and to translate the curriculum into the messages that their brain best receives and processes. Same information, different communication. Once your child can process the information in a familiar way, the “I can’t do it” mindset disappears. They can do it. And we can do it. Our tutors are trained to make a maths lesson feel like an English lesson. To make an English lesson echo a physics lesson.

What does it mean in practice?

Meet Ava. Ava went from a B- student to an A+ student in a month with our tutor’s help. It was that fast, and that simple. She merely needed her lessons transformed into the language that suited her needs.

Read Ava’s Story

The Overwhelm Mindset

Your child seems to take FOREVER to complete a simple assignment. They sit down to do their homework and it’s a struggle for all concerned. In the time it should take to get the first subject done, they still haven’t located a suitable pen. As a parent, words like lazy and disorganised start popping into mind, and you worry that your child will struggle with other life skills, like holding down a job. Deep breaths.

How we change the “Overwhelm” mindset

Every child is different, but our tutors would begin looking for clues as to the source of the child’s overwhelm. Most often it comes down to poor study strategy skills. We assume that by highschool, children have developed a set of skills that will carry them through their academic career but in a surprising number of students, this is not the case. Something as simple as looking at an assignment sheet and recognising the smaller tasks required to make up the bigger submission, to order these and to begin attacking them – this gap in your child’s understanding will cause underperformance in all areas of their school life. Our approach is to identify these gaps and help them to “relearn” how to study.

What does that look like in practice?

Joseph was a “C” student who was underperforming at school because he struggled with the “how” to study. It’s hard for a teacher in a busy classroom to pick apart a child’s underperformance and find the cause, so our tutor Emily took on that responsibility. Joseph, armed with an easy to follow study strategy, became an A student in no time.

Read Joseph’s Story

The Low Priority Mindset

What is the distraction your child is feeling is justified? What if there’s something big going on in her personal life or home life? How do you get a kid with a lot on her plate to keep focused on schoolwork? No child is beyond helping. We have worked with kids from all manner of backgrounds, including children who have endured terrible hardship and even trauma. When your world is chaotic, it’s hard to find mind space to dedicate to school work.

How we change the “Low Priority” mindset

We acknowledge the stress that the child is under and help them to find ways to work within the space that they have. It may mean finding a study strategy that helps them “do more with less time” or to give them the confidence boost they need to attack a task without hesitation and with complete focus. Our team is carefully trained to recognise challenges to learning. We empower children to take control of their studies and this in turn helps them feel more in control of their situations. Our program has been developed by child psychologists to ensure that no child, no matter how much chaos they work within, is left behind.

What does this look like in practice?

Meet Skylah. Skylah was an “E” student. For her teachers, Skylah represents the most challenging student in the class. She was simply unable to keep up. What our tutor Libbie discovered was that Skylah was coping with a sick mum. Not only did that mean she was carrying a heavy emotional load, it also meant that she was picking up the slack at home. She had very limited time for study and her grades were suffering. We helped her find ways to get more achieved in a very limited time. We helped her feel more “in control” of her life by helping her take charge of her studies. Skylah is now in the top 5% at school. She’s killing it. We could not be prouder of Skylah!

Read Skylah’s Story

And this is just the tip of the iceberg for underperforming at school

There are so many negative mindsets that end in your child underperforming at school. As parents, it’s almost impossible for you to diagnose and correct a problem with your teen’s mindset. Your child’s teacher will likely have made some progress, but nothing compares to intensive one-on-one diagnosis and correction. That’s where A Team Tuition has focused, with our “Academic Personal Training” program. All of our tutors are trained in overcoming barriers to learning and we’re proud of our many, many success stories. It’s not just these kids, we have hundreds of stories just like theirs. Your child could be one of them.

How to get a 99 ATAR seems like an impossible question, especially with the many factors that go into the calculation! The elusive 99.95 ATAR is the ultimate goal for secondary school students and seems like an impossible dream. However, I’m here to show you that no matter what, you can get the marks you want at the end of high school to give yourself the best possible start for the future. I received an OP 1. How? Well, what counts the most is how hard you are willing to work to achieve your goals! Sometimes you need to do just a little bit extra to really boost your grades!

How to get a 99 ATAR? Here’s what I learned!

My personal journey to a top university entry score

So… here are five things that I did during my senior years of high school that allowed me to achieve an OP 1. Yes, I’m one of the old school OP graduates! With ATAR now the standard score for access to university places, this is also a guide to how to get a 99 ATAR.

1. Do Extra-Curriculars

2. Do Your Own Research

3. Help Others Out

4. Do The Things You Don’t Have To

5. Constantly Strive To Improve

1. Do Extra-Curriculars

It is a common misconception that to do well at school – really well – you must throw yourself entirely into your schoolwork while leaving your friends, hobbies, and interests behind. I won’t deny that getting a 99 ATAR will take a massive commitment of time, energy and determination, but if you focus solely on school you will, quite simply… burn out. Being able to have breaks from schoolwork is important in keeping you sane and focused! How to get a 99 ATAR is about staying sane through that really tough final year of high school. Also, don’t forget… participation in extra-curricular activities also looks fantastic on resume and scholarship applications!

However, while there is no ‘one’ extracurricular activity that will help your grades, there are ways to be clever about how to choose what you dedicate your time to. Choose extra-curriculars based on:

What you know you enjoy

Are most likely to stick with

The time spent travelling to and from the activity

How flexible they will be with your schoolwork

When they are scheduled

These factors are super important, as you don’t want a big game of basketball or a music rehearsal the night before an exam or during the days leading up to an assignment due date!

For example, I enjoyed doing extra-curriculars at my school. One week in year 12 I was completely bogged down in schoolwork and study. However, as some of these extra-curriculars were run by my own classroom teachers, I was able to adjust my schedule around, and keep my focus on, my school work!

2. Do Your Own Research

There is no denying that, like the old OP system, the ATAR system too is quite specific in how marks are given! Getting an ATAR of 99 or more means understanding a very complex series of rules and calculations, and for the class of 2020, these are compounded by the special allowances due to the COVID-19 interruptions. It’s not just class of 2020 either. Calculating ATAR scores will be more complex for a few years as we adjust to these returning to normal post-CoronaVirus.

However, there are definite strategies to succeed outside of merely being able to write a good essay and solve problems correctly. While some schools may already be aware of these strategies and share them with students, there are also ways you can be proactive and find out exactly how to successfully meet all the criteria! The best place to find out how grades are assigned is right at your fingertips! There is a detailed list provided in the criteria sheets of all assignments and exams! Each subject is likely to have a standard list of criteria that will be either the same, or at least similar, across all assessment pieces.

For example, a key criterion in senior English assessment is “evaluation of perspectives and representations of concepts, identities, times and places”. However, it is a criterion often missed by students (myself included). To get an ATAR of 99+, it’s vital to understand exactly what the assessors are looking for with each assessment. If you’re keen to learn more, visit the QCAA website.

It initially sounds like a confusing mess straight out of a thesaurus, but it means that you must analyse how texts are constructions by their authors, who have made conscious decisions to include concepts, characters, and settings to convey a specific message. So, even if you write a fantastic assignment but haven’t fulfilled this criterion, you will NOT get the marks! I discovered this only after handing in many English assignments, in which I kept getting stuck on the same mark. Finally, I realised that I was being marked down in the same criterion each time. With this knowledge, I was able to make sure I completely addressed all the criteria next time and saw an immediate improvement in my results!

The QCAA has a ton of resources available, most importantly sample assessment pieces as well as syllabus and learning guides! If you struggle with any of the descriptions and concepts, you can speak to a professional high school tutor familiar with these criteria. Learn more here.

Also look at how you need to perform in ATAR for specific careers

What ATAR do I need for Law?

What ATAR do I need for Teaching?

What ATAR do I need for Medicine?

3. Help Others Out

As the A system is based on your position relative to your peers, it is easy to think that the way to succeed is to keep to your own and fend off the competition! However, in my experience, that is the exact OPPOSITE of what you should do for several reasons.

It is widely known that the best way to learn a concept is to teach it to someone else! So I guess my calling as a high school tutor started in high school! Helping your classmates will allow you to discuss, learn, and understand the content for your exams and assignments. There’s no better way to understand different perspectives on a topic than to discuss it with peers. Even better, your classmates will likely help you in return! There have been so many times where I have been sitting outside an exam room and a friend has brought up something which I’ve never heard of that turned out to be on the exam. While waiting to go into a year 12 exam, a friend taught me a concept I had missed throughout my study (it can happen) that I took into the exam and used to get an A+. Furthermore, year 12 is without a doubt difficult! Having a support network of friends (especially peers) is invaluable. During these times, being able to rely on each other means that at the end of the day, everyone can cross the finish line together!

Find our more, read our ATAR FAQ’s

4. Do The Things You Don’t Have To

At some point, every student gets given a task by a teacher that doesn’t count towards their mark or has no due date – and every student at some point has not done this extra work. However, to get really good marks, you need to do the extra reading, the unessential homework, and revision each day! How to get a 99 ATAR is to put in the hard yards. Not only will this extra work increase the quality of your assessment, but it will prove to your teachers that you are willing to take extra steps to do well. It will also give you more confidence when walking into exams and enable you to draft your assignments more effectively.

This is particularly useful in humanities subjects, like Modern History. Before a Modern History exam, I ensured I remembered at least one extra piece of information on each topic studied. This not only boosted my confidence, but it also allowed me to write a more effective, coherent, and in-depth response, as I wasn’t just relying on the limited scope of my class notes and revision materials. Achieving a high ATAR score isn’t just about being accepted into the degree of your choice, it’s about having a superior understanding of the subject matter. While the score matters, the knowledge is vital too.

5. Constantly Strive To Improve

What helped me the most but is something that is often overlooked is the process of constantly improving your work. Many people think that by year 11 or 12, you must be stuck in your ways and have no time to improve. This is FALSE. Every new assessment item is a chance to re-evaluate your work and make improvements. Even if you’ve had a shaky start to the year, you can make small, incremental differences to your grades which can help in getting an ATAR of 99+. While working hard is a way to get good marks, if you forget to check your results and learn from past feedback, you will find yourself getting the same grades every time.

So, how do you make genuine improvements to your work?

Firstly, read your draft and assessment feedback and look at the criteria sheet. After every assessment make a note of three things or criterion you can improve upon and take it on-board for next time. Secondly, speak to your teachers, and don’t be scared to be direct. Ask them, “what can I do to improve?” or “how can I get an A?” They are the ones marking your work, so they know exactly what you need to improve upon to get a better exit score.

Right before a geography exam, I asked my teacher what I needed to do to improve my mark. He was able to have another look through my work and tell me exactly what criteria I needed to address. Teachers are almost always willing to help, so I recommend giving it a shot and asking them what you can do to get a better mark. Your teachers want you to get a high ATAR score. They want to help. Never be afraid to ask a teacher.

How to get a 99 ATAR?

Like an OP1, getting a 99 ATAR or even that elusive 99.95 ATAR isn’t impossible. It’s a process that involves a lot of passion for learning and commitment to constant improvement. I was definitely not an OP1 student when I started high school, so I know first-hand whatever your current grades are, so long as you are willing to put in the effort and hard work, you can get the results you want! Always ask for help and don’t be afraid to seek out a tutor who understands not only the ATAR system but also where you, personally, can overcome any barriers to getting that top entry score. As an A Team Tutor, I can see first-hand how our program helps our students achieve amazing results. I wish I’d had an A Team Tutor myself.

For millions of people around the world with existing trauma or anxiety disorders, the Coronavirus pandemic can be a psychological nightmare. But what about the rest of us? Feeling a bit…off? Thinking… “Why can’t I concentrate?” You may find it’s not just your child struggling to concentrate while working at home. Coronavirus Anxiety is sweeping the nation faster than the bug itself.

Why can’t I concentrate?

<img loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-10678" src="https://dev.ateamtuition.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Why-Cant-I-Concentrate-Corona-Anxiety.jpg" alt="Why Can't I consentrate?
Humans are hard-wired to avoid danger and seek a sense of control over their lives. The rapid onset of Coronavirus-related disruptions and the accompanying uncertainties have removed this perceived control, along with any sense that we can predict the future. This can cause your emotional and mental state to become less coherent, and your ability to concentrate, relax and sleep is almost bound to be affected.

”Corona Anxiety” has a name – it’s Hypervigilance

There is a name for what many of us are feeling: hypervigilance. Hypervigilance puts you on high alert. It is an enhanced state of sensory sensitivity characterised by increased adrenaline and cortisol, which in turn increases your heart rate, muscle tension and blood pressure, and causes shallow breathing.

The fight-flight centres of our brain become highly responsive to stimuli that might be threatening in some way. We may become preoccupied with particular thoughts or find ourselves scanning the environment to search for sights, sounds, people, behaviours, information, or anything else that is reminiscent of danger or trauma.

At present, this might include scanning your environment for signs of people coughing or potential contamination. It might just as easily look like compulsively scanning news sites and social media for the latest updates. This is how ancient survival mechanisms manifest in a modern age.

Signs of Coronavirus-related hypervigilance

Hypervigilance can lead to erratic emotional and behavioural patterns, as well as producing difficulties with social interaction and relationships. People may have trouble fully connecting with their surroundings or their family. They can become agitated or have a difficult time falling or staying asleep. They may use unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as drinking or eating too much. All this will eventually lead to exhaustion.

For kids, it can manifest in emotional meltdowns and a reluctance or outright refusal to complete tasks, including their home study tasks. It’s important to know that your hypervigilance is based on biological instincts, not your conscious choices. Your child isn’t “being naughty” – they may simply be responding to their own anxiety. This pandemic has shifted our immediate priorities, and such an abrupt and unanticipated change can be very stressful.

Healthy coping mechanisms become more important than ever

• Exercise helps use up all that stressful adrenaline in your system. Do yoga, go walking, dance around your living room.
• Laughter is a great form of release. Watch funny movies, sitcoms, or listen to comedy online.
• Kids need downtime too. Getting them out and about for a walk or play is great but (moderate) screen time can help them to relax too.
• Crying releases tension and expresses emotion. Sad movies help too!
• Hypervigilance makes you shallow breathe. Download one of the many mindfulness apps and practice 10 minutes of slow deep breathing at least twice a day.
• Constantly scrolling social media and obsessing about Coronavirus news will make you more anxious and less focused. Limit this in favour of the healthy coping mechanisms above.

Helping others feels good and can be a much-needed distraction. If you have the capacity, help your family and community cope with the increasingly difficult practicalities of life. Stay safe and remember: Stop thinking “Why can’t I concentrate?” or worse, reprimanding your children for their lack of focus. Get some fresh air and take a break from social media. We are all in this together.

Emily's strategy for Joseph

Whether in person or online, our tutors are highly trained not just to teach schoolwork, but to diagnose and overcome the challenges to academic achievement. In Joseph's case, it was a study strategy. A child's study strategy can make or break their academic performance. A poor study strategy can be mistaken for laziness, complacency and even ineptitude. For Emily, it took no time at all to uncover where she could help Joseph and put practical steps in place to set him on his path to becoming an A student.

Emily created a study and assignment strategy for Joseph that he could apply across all his subjects. With Emily's help, he improved his performance in English, Maths and Social Science. Taking control of "how" he studied and how he felt about doing assignments gave Joseph a big confidence boost. It cleared a path for him to improve his mediocre grades - and that he did! By the end of the first term, Joseph was so confident in his ability to get top grades... that he just did.

Never underestimate confidence and strategy

Unfortunately, some schools, - and parents - focus on a child's intellect instead of looking at the whole picture. Nothing ruins a child's confidence faster than feeling pressure to "be smart". In fact, intellect is one small factor in academic achievement. The best results are a balance of hard work, determination, attitude, support and a study strategy that removes barriers to success. Once the strategy is in place, your child can feel the confidence to roll up their sleeves and go for that A grade.

Is studying online as effective as face-to-face tutoring?

It's a misconception that so many online tutors face. That without their presence looming in the room, their pupil will lack focus and discipline. In actual fact, studying online with Zoom or Skype means your tutor can see everything your child is doing during lessons. Some tutors report that online tutorials empower children to take ownership of their activity. The only adult in the room isn't actually in the room, and yet the student take control of their workload, they demonstrate independence, initiative and self-reliance. These are all vital study skills, not to mention life skills.

It's not a question of studying online vs studying in person, it comes down to with WHOM your child studies online. An excellent tutor can tell how your child is feeling, can identify any big picture or day to day barriers to learning, and then adjust the lesson plan to suit. Studying online with a highly skilled tutor will always deliver better results and more confidence than face-to-face study with an ordinary tutor.

Is Joseph just the exception to the rule?

Not all kids are like Joseph. Especially in the difficult "year 9" classroom. Joseph is different to other kids his age in one key way - he wanted to improve his grades. He was willing to set a goal and adapt to his new study strategy. That's the hard bit; convincing a teen to embrace the idea that "he can do this". But with over 2000 students transformed from mediocre achievers to high achievers, tutors like Emily have paved the way to creating success stories for ALL kids - no matter how they feel at first - or where they're geographically located. A Team Tuition has face-to-face tutoring options in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Ipswich and Toowoomba but our online classes are available Australia wide.

Meet Ava. Ava is an A+ student - but she wasn't always. Ava's story is of a typical student who wasn't meeting her full academic potential. To become an A-plus student, it's not just about putting in the long hours, it's about identifying areas of potential learning growth. Sometimes, small changes make all the difference - and of course, some hard work helps too! So wondering how to become an A student parent? Spoiler: It's not about us, it's about your child and how they consume and recall information.

Why studying more isn't always the answer to becoming an A plus student

At A Team Tuition, we pride ourselves in transforming students not only academically, but also psychologically, emotionally, and any other ways our students may require in order to reach the pinnacle of their studies. While many students may require Academic Personal Training to catch up on school content and understand assignments, Ava needed help with something different - the methods in which she approaches studying.

Ava set goals and that makes a big difference

Ava had a distinct goal. So many children see study as a necessary and never-ending chore. Their goals are nothing more specific than making it through to school holidays. Ava had a goal in mind. Helping your child to establish attainable and timely goals gives them direction with their studies. “When Ava received a B- on her Semester 1 report, we decided to get her some personalised tutoring and she was determined to raise her grade to an A, and finish the year on a high.” We all love a student who aims high for the sky!

Enter Jess, not your typical tutor

A Team Tuition paired Jess, one of our amazing Academic Personal Trainers, with Ava soon after Ava’s parents reached out to us. Fortunately, Jess and Ava connected very quickly through their common bubbly personalities. When a tutor and student pair well, it makes studying more enjoyable - that's why we go the extra mile to find you the right help for your child. Jess set to work understanding Ava's barriers to learning. Our Academic Personal Trainers take a deep dive into your child's learning language and mindset to clear all barriers to meeting their full academic potential.

Why wasn't Ava an A plus student?

Jess discovered that Ava’s greatest struggle was remembering the content taught through effective means: “It wasn’t so much the theory behind the concepts, however, it was about devising techniques Ava could use in exam/test situations.” As a result, Jess thought it would be perfect to first find out Ava’s learning language – a key element to the effective and efficient learning of an individual. (Be sure to check out our learning language blogs to gain a better understanding on the best way you take in information!)

Retraining Ava to learn in the right language for her specific needs

Jess prepared a test for Ava to work through 3 different problems where she had to implement either an auditory, visual or kin-aesthetic type approach. The outcome of this test suggested that Ava is an auditory learner. Taking the wrong approach to teaching Ava in a classroom would mean she may struggle to understand the curriculum. As one of up to 30 students in a classroom, your child's preferred learning language may be overlooked. This is where a skilled tutor can make such a big difference in transforming your C or B student into an A student.

Teaching maths to an auditory learner is possible

In order to utilise Ava’s newly discovered learning language to the duo’s advantage, Jess and Ava began to work on creating rhymes for learning algebra. Who would’ve thought algebra could be rhymed? Our power Academic Personal Trainer and student here have truly inspired us all with their resourceful creativity! The secret to how to become an A student isn't a secret at all, it's simply teaching your child in the language they best understand. Even if the subject matter is Algebra!

So, is Ava a remarkable student or can any child achieve better results?

Ava wasn't afraid to set goals. She wasn't afraid to put in the work. Ava is a remarkable student; all our kids are remarkable - and our tutors are committed to drawing out their remarkable skills. In tweens and teens, a solid attitude may seem remarkable! But with the right help, most children can uncover their inner geek and achieve better academic results. However, there is no success without a little hardship.

Like a lot of teens and tweens we meet, Ava lacked some motivation. Jess described Ava as a very relaxed person, which prompted her to work on trying to make their sessions more engaging. Our Academic Personal Trainers are trained to help lift student motivation by creating tutoring sessions that the child wants to engage with. It wasn’t long before Jess surprised us all with her ingenuity in overcoming such an obstacle:

“When Ava was trying to memorise her oral, we would read it out in different voices, trying to act out the words. This made her have to think about how placing emphasis on different words can change the meaning of what she is saying,” Jess noted. This not only helps with memorising but also helps develop deeper language skills - and is silly and fun... even if Ava was formerly lacking motivation.

The pinnacle point of transformation for them both occurred when they were revising for Ava’s test – they broke the session up with naughts and crosses when Ava got 10 questions right in a row!!

“It made the atmosphere light-hearted and she seemed to have gained confidence with her ability,” remarked Jess.

What child doesn't need more self-confidence?

When asked about the most significant thing she contributed to Ava’s life, Jess replied: “Personally, it’s hard to pinpoint one significant thing as it is the little things that build up to one big thing. Maybe confidence would be the key thing, building on what she knows and reinforcing it.”

Through Jess’ Academic Personal Training, Ava has become more confident when it comes to approaching problems she does not completely understand. She is also a lot more open to new ideas. Aversion to new experiences is pretty typical in children, but overcoming it can change their whole life outlook.

Wait, this year 8 student started doing her homework without complaint? NEVER!

Both Ava’s parents have seen a positive change in attitude:

“Ava immediately became more confident in both English and Maths, and her general confidence grew very quickly. Jess helped her with an oral presentation and Ava was much more confident with performing the presentation in class.” Not only did Ava’s parents reveal that Ava became more confident and keener to study, she also works diligently at home and is really focusing on her homework and assignments now that tutoring became part of her life.

There is almost no greater feeling than seeing your child transform and grow after getting help from an Academic Personal Trainer. And, of course, Jess has benefited equally as much from her tutoring sessions with Ava:

“Ava is an absolute joy to tutor, I always look forward to our sessions. She has such a bubbly personality that the time flies by. She approaches questions slightly differently than how I would, so she’s taught me a new perspective in some things which is really refreshing. She’s teaching me just as much as I’m helping her.”

So, how do you become an A student like Ava? What's the secret?

At A Team Tuition, there are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, persistence, hard work, and learning from failure. In the case of Jess and Ava, their hard work was paid off when everything came together to successfully transform Ava's results. Of course, this would not have been possible without Jess’ connection to Ava. Coming from a fresh perspective, Jess became more of a mentor than a teacher to Ava. Moreover, having just finished high school, Jess could possibly relate to Ava more than a teacher may. As an Academic Personal Trainer (not just a standard tutor), Jess was also able to spend ample time understanding how Ava learns best, making it easier to come up with strategies to enhance Ava’s learning. The secret is no secret - help your child learn the way that best suits them, with a tutor who understands their needs, and you may just find all barriers to academic achievement melt away!

For us here at A Team Tuition - nothing makes us happier and prouder than both a transformed student and a transformed Academic Personal Trainer!

Before I found A Team Tuition, I did not have the best first-job experience!

Like most teenagers that graduate high-school, I was in desperate need of a job.

In a small town, I thought I was lucky to find full-time employment in a small, fluorescent-lit, and windowless office that was relatively close to where I lived.

The first few months were like a honeymoon period.

Only 17, I was the youngest in the workplace by many, many, many years.

After a while, I noticed that other staff members would give me all the little, tedious tasks that they couldn’t be bothered to do themselves.

They would expect me to prioritise their tasks over my own work. Eventually, my age, kindness, and compliancy were completely taken advantage of by other staff.

Every day I dreaded going to work. I found myself continuously asking, ‘am I good enough’? This took a massive toll on my mental-health.

The constant criticism made me question my own self-worth.

It made me question my competency. And despite being an A-student, it made me question my intellectual ability.

However, despite all the ups and downs, I do appreciate the skills, knowledge, and resilience that I developed during my time there.

It threw me in the deep end and taught me how to swim. It also provided me the financial resources and motivation to pursue my career aspirations and go to university.

It made me realise that I wanted to make a real difference; not just to my boss’s bank account.

So, it taught me a lot. From any experience, good or bad, there is always a lesson to be learnt.

Personally, I learnt many things, from interpersonal skills and business procedures to the power of resilience, self-belief, and determination. It shaped me into who I am today.

Taking this experience into consideration, when I moved to Brisbane to attend university, I made sure to spend quite some time looking for a job that would allow me to make a real difference.

I wanted to help others… take pride in my work, and most of all… just feel happy.

The A Team Tuition advertisement for new tutors/ APTs (Academic Personal Trainers) caught my eye immediately. After reading the job description, it was as if all the pieces of the puzzle fell into place.

I just knew it was the job for me!

Why did I become an academic personal trainer?

I was excited about the opportunities it would bring… as with my high academic achievements, I could help, educate, and mentor kids throughout their schooling.

I knew this was a great chance to make a difference in someone’s life.

The job requirements were also super flexible – meaning that I could work around my university studies and other commitments.

With all that said, I don’t think it could have taken more than a few seconds for me to hit the ‘APPLY’ button!

From the first phone-interview with Harley, I knew this was something special that I wanted to be a part of.

His enthusiasm, passion, and love for his job were apparent in his every-word.

I remember that one of the first questions I asked was about A Team Tuition’s team environment – were they a family?

Everyone I spoke to, could not hold the team dynamic in higher regard.

They were all proud, happy, and grateful to be a part of it.

What really makes A Team Tuition stand out from the crowd is the support network it provides! Not just to the clients, but to their staff.

The whole office crew is with you every step of the way. From the fantastic training that Katy provides, client services excellent communication, to Stuart managing the content and of course, the success managers… everyone works together as one.

As an academic personal trainer, I report directly to my success manager Peta. She is there to listen to any of my concerns, ideas, or other issues.

Personally, she has helped me grow my own skillset so much. From new concepts, ideas, how to communicate content to students to celebrating every transformation with me!

It is phenomenal what you can achieve when you have that type of support behind you. It makes me feel like I have the ability and resources to do my job properly.

As a result of this, in my first few weeks, I had helped a year 11 student transform his biology grade from a D to a B!

Now while the grade is fantastic, what was even better- was the self-belief that it sparked within him. He soon wanted to improve his grades for all his subjects.

Soon after, I helped another student transform a B in English to an A!

Then the transformations just kept rolling in!

But, while I was proud of each and every student for their results, I was prouder of their growth in self-belief, motivation, and determination.

Academic Personal Training is More Than just a Job

Being an APT has been the most rewarding, insightful, and eye-opening experience! It has made me realise that you can be passionate about your job and do what you love. It has made me realise that you can actually be excited to go to work.

That’s when work doesn’t feel like work anymore.

I might have got my foot in the door as a tutor, however becoming part of the A Team, also provided many other opportunities.

Straight away I got on-board with content management writing blogs… this allowed me to fulfil my passion of writing. I also joined in with the school programs, which have been one of the best experiences of my career so far.

So, whether you’re a university student, wannabe teacher, or just someone with a passion for education that wants to help others and enjoys working with children, apply to become a member of the A team.

The team at A Team Tuition is so supportive and the job is so flexible, transparent, and rewarding that you will never want to leave!

The build-up to high school graduation should be a time of great excitement. You’ve made it to the end of a major chapter, and you deserve to celebrate, but at the same time, the next stage of life is coming at you fast. As high school comes to an end, you’ll have a few new challenges to contend with, and plenty of lessons you can’t learn in a classroom.

Change

There’s no escaping it - finishing high school changes pretty much everything about your life, and the loss of a well-worn routine can be scary. Feeling resistant to change is natural, and although there’s no escaping it, you can prepare for it. Start by finding out as much as possible about what’s ahead and how you can put yourself in the best possible position to manage it. You’ll be surprised how much something simple like updating your resume or organising a planner for your uni schedule can boost your mental state.

Freedom

Freedom probably sounds like a great thing, and it can be, but it can also come as a rude shock when you’ve spent most of your life being directed and pushed through the system by those around you. Procrastination is one of your biggest obstacles in this new environment, and it will destroy your chances of success if you let it. Self-discipline is always a work in progress, but making a strong start is as simple as organising your study schedule. A sturdy commitment to your wall planner will keep you a few steps ahead.

New Social Circles

High school is the puddle to university’s pond, or the ocean of the working world. and you’ll probably feel like a guppy when you first arrive. The good news is that there are hundreds of people around you riding the same wave. We’re all strangers at first, so don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation - it will be great practice for each one of your new classes or team meetings. Ultimately, your social experience in further study or the working world will depend on your attitude, and a positive outlook is far more likely to help you find a great group of study or work mates.

Different Lessons

Good news: nine times out of ten, leaving high school means you can escape that school subject you didn’t enjoy. Sounds great, right? The downside is that becoming an adult comes with a host of brand new, often tougher lessons and decisions, with consequences to boot. Suddenly, a strong character will be a defining factor in your success, and while a foundation of effective study skills will prove very useful, you’ll have the opportunity to decide what, when, and how you learn. As you transition into adulthood, you’ll also have a whole host of lessons to learn about life, from planning your career trajectory to doing your own tax return. Before long, you’ll discover just how much is left to learn beyond the classroom walls.

Pressure

Whatever your post-high school plans, expect the pressure to rise after graduation. University comes with all of the stresses of completing assessment and work experience, while holding down a regular job and narrowly resisting the urge to spend all of your savings on Mexican food. Meanwhile, making a beeline for the 9-to-5 corporate world leads to the pressure of keeping up with a brand new workload and trying to squeeze in a social life around a new lifestyle. New pressures and stresses are inevitable, but there are plenty of things you can do to make sure you’re managing them in the best way possible.

Look After Yourself

Maintaining a healthy body and mindset makes all the difference when the workload gets heavier. Fight the urge to hole up in your bedroom in the days leading up to an exam or an important project at work - otherwise, you’ll run the risk of burning out. Instead, do your best to keep up your regular activities, make time to see your friends, and block out at least eight hours for sleep every night. There is true power in a power nap, if you use it wisely.

Set Goals

It’s no secret that setting SMART goals is key to achieving great results, in school and in life. Even if you know the power of a well-considered goal, it’s what you do with it that counts. Research has proven that goals are far more likely to be achieved when written down, so don’t leave your potential between your ears. Putting your aspirations down on paper makes you accountable for your actions, and it can also be a great motivator when you need a reminder of what you’re working for.

Utilise Your Support Network

No one makes it through a challenge like high school alone, and if you’re lucky, the supports you called on during the tough times will still be around after you graduate. Don’t be afraid to ask your parents, high school friends, or even past teachers for the advice and support you need as you navigate the path into the future. Post-graduation is also the perfect time to start building new networks, so don’t waste an opportunity to meet someone new. The next person you bump into on campus or in the office could be the one to offer you the right advice, mentorship, or even a job. Every person you meet has the potential to be a great teacher, whether you realise it at the time or not.

Once you’ve mastered the ebb and flow of adult life, you’ll have a chance to enjoy the perks of becoming a more independent person, and there’s a lot to love. It’s not only about escaping the perils of Pythagoras or the struggles of Shakespeare, but also about having the chance to map out your own journey through life.

New Opportunities

While you’re part of the schooling system, it might feel all-consuming, but there’s a far more expansive world waiting for you on the other side. You’ll have the chance to explore avenues you may not have even considered, stretching your capabilities to new heights in the process, and as you do, you’ll discover new parts of yourself. Opportunities are everywhere if you’re willing to seek them out, and your education will make all the difference when the time comes to reach for what you want.

Autonomy

Like many young adults in the making, you’ve probably been waiting for the opportunity to break out and do your own thing since the training wheels came off, and graduation is that chance. After high school, you’ll be able to make your own choices, choose your company, and ultimately decide who you want to be. Once you get over the initial shock of change and new-found freedom, you might just find

Growth

One of the great things about a new situation is that it forces you to improvise, adapt, and overcome new challenges. It will probably feel uncomfortable at first, but the best way out is usually straight through. When you develop your thought processes for handling adversity and change, and turn those processes into habits, you’ll find yourself growing into a more capable, confident person - character traits which will serve you well into adulthood.

For most of us, A’s are the name of the game. We all want to achieve the best grades possible! Going from a C student to an A student is the ultimate academic goal!

However, with such a focused goal, sometimes we don’t recognise the effects of reaching that goal. I’m not here to say that there are serious consequences for getting A’s. What I’m saying is… there are many unexpected changes that you might go through after achieving that goal, which can impact how well you keep your hard-earned grade!

I went from being a C student to an A student

You might be thinking, ‘who is this person and what do they know about achieving an A in Maths?’. Well, as someone who climbed two letter grades (from C’s to A’s) in Maths, I know a thing or two about how your work ethic and attitude changes once you start achieving well.

What happens when you go next level with grades?

With that in mind, here are a few things I noticed after successfully raising my grades:

1) A’s don’t keep themselves!

2) You get more help!

3) Confidence!

1) A’s don’t keep themselves!

Photos

Congratulations… you have achieved that well-deserved A! However, don’t get comfortable. Because it is true… you will have to put in the same amount of effort (if not more) into every piece of future assessment to stay an A student.

The big trap of C student to A student - is complacency

A lot of students tend to fall into a rut of settling and getting comfortable with a grade. For example, it took me a while to realise that if my goal was an A, settling for a B wasn’t going to get me anywhere.

Even once I got that A, it was so tempting to sit back and relax. Unfortunately, one A doesn’t mean A’s forever! You must maintain the effort and motivation that got you there in the first place.

It can seem so easy to just keep at your current level. If you are happy with that grade, why try to do better next time? Well, if it is one thing all my experience has taught me… is that there is always room for improvement! The best learners are the ones constantly asking and applying feedback, in hopes of improving their ability.

How A Team Tuition drives A students

At A Team Tuition, we love to develop growth mindsets, as we appreciate the power it can have! This is where you believe that with hard work, dedication, and motivation you can always improve any ability! This self-belief allows you to take constructive criticism and utilise it, to improve your work in the future.

This is so important! Because, when you take feedback to improve – even when you already have the A – you’re generating the best possible outcome for yourself!

So… keep up the good work! Getting an A will show you that you are more than capable to achieve it again and all you need to do is keep putting the effort in! Ask questions, take feedback in your stride with a growth mindset, and always know there’s more to learn!

2) You Get More Help

There is a common complaint that the ‘teacher’s pet’ always gets so much more help than the other 25+ kids in the classroom.

However, this is simply not true. Teachers don’t have favourites. Teachers are passionate about educating all their students and providing them the tools they need for success!

Instead, teachers are more likely to give more attention to students who engage, be attentive, and work hard in class. When you think about it, it makes a lot of sense!

Teachers have dozens of students to look after, and already have their hands full educating the pioneers of the future. But, while they are amazing people, they are not telepathic. So… if you want extra help, you need to let them know! Just put in the extra time – ask questions in class or go talk to them after class. Because, if you show your enthusiasm, they’re going to see that!

“You have to… let them know you need and want that extra help!”

Also, have you ever noticed that the high achieving students in your class… frequently put up their hands to ask or answer questions in class, go to the teacher’s desk to ask questions, email the teacher frequently, or even go and talk to them during their lunch break?

It might seem like teachers start focusing on those students who already have good grades – but this is because those students constantly demonstrate their enthusiasm and use their teacher’s better than others!

They take full advantage of having a smart intellect at their fingertips five days a week! This enables the high-achieving students to continuously get feedback, advice, and guidance to improve the quality of their work and maintain their grades.

I can tell you right now, from personal experience, if you start to show that you are passionate and want more help, you will get it! Try it out… see what happens

3) Confidence!

Once you start achieving A’s, your confidence will skyrocket! I promise!

This may happen for several reasons…

To begin with, achieving an A informs you that you are more than capable of achieving well in the future! The power of self-belief is empowering, as it allows you to open your mind to endless possibilities!

With this considered, it also gives you the incentive to set higher goals in the future. To become a straight A student perhaps?

All goals should be achievable

I know that, for me, once I started climbing the achievement ranks in Maths, all I wanted was to do better and better until I reached the top. Little victories really matter. Achieving a B grade, where before you had a C. A pass, where before you were failing.

Maybe it took you four whole years – like me – or maybe you managed it in just a short time. Maybe you had help, maybe you didn’t. Regardless, something about achieving that goal just makes it easier to achieve the next one.

So… there you have it… the three things I noticed after successfully raising my grades! Hopefully, this has enlightened you about what to expect from a change in grades. But maybe your experience will be totally different to mine. Either way… good luck!

However, if you do need a hand getting to that A – or keeping it – feel free to contact one of our friendly staff at A Team Tuition

Is your child struggling at school? If the answer is yes, then you have found the right article! If the answer is no… keep reading as you never know when this issue may raise its ugly head.

It is normal for students to struggle with school work from time to time. Whether it is difficulty understanding a new topic or with time management. Failure results in learning. Learning results in intellectual and self-growth. The problem is when a student doesn’t learn from their failure. This is when unhealthy study traits start growing their roots.

As parents and tutors, it is our job to identify these traits. Once we identify them, then we can start to de-weed. However, in saying that… trait identification is not always an easy thing to do. Luckily, at A Team Tuition we are trained to do just that! Below, is a list of the top five worst traits of struggling students. Once you know the signs, helping struggling students is not as hard as you may thnk.

1) Procrastination

The Procrastinator… the one who will find any excuse to postpone starting their work. Procrastination can be anything from cleaning to watching just one more episode on Netflix. Let’s be honest… we all do it at some point. However, procrastination becomes dangerous, when it is done despite the negative consequences.

If a student procrastinates it will likely result in:

Unfinished homework

Starting an assignment at the last minute

Staying up late at night to finish work

Cramming for exams

High levels of stress

Poor results

Does any of this sound familiar? If yes, then don’t stress!

Here are some fantastic tips on how to help students struggling with the problematic procrastination cycle…

Show the student that you support and believe in them. This will give them the confidence to approach the task at hand.

Help the student with their time-management skills and encourage early preparation.

Ensure the student studies in a quiet area, without any distractions. This will reduce opportunities to procrastinate and enhance productivity.

Implement A Team Tuition’s tutoring services. Our tutors provide mentorship and work side by side with students to ensure early assessment preparation. This also allows students to develop time-management skills that will last a lifetime.

Remember… don’t procrastinate, dominate!

2) Is your student struggling by being easily distracted by social media, TV and the surrounding environment

In this day and age, students are surrounded by an ocean of technology. From laptops to phones to iPads… social media, the internet, and television is just one swipe away.

It is undeniable that technology has great prospects for a fantastic study tool. However, it can become a serious problem when that beautiful, beckoning, blue screen becomes an irresistible distraction! Today, this virtual trap is the leading founder of unproductivity.

Does your child do their schoolwork in front of the TV? Do they have their phone next to them whilst studying? Do they consistently not complete any work during designated study time?

If the answer is yes, then here are some great strategies to ‘unfriend’ that horrible habit and help your struggling student:

Remove all electronics during designated study time.

If the internet is needed for tasks, provide increased supervision or use settings to block access to social media apps.

Encourage work to be completed in a quiet study area without any distractions.

Implement A Team Tuition’s tutoring services. We know how important it is for our students to study in a quiet, relaxed and distraction-free environment. Tutors work one on one with students to ensure constant engagement and task completion.

Turn that phone off and get to work! You’ll be thankful for it later!

3) Lack of time management

24 hours. 1440 Minutes. 86400 seconds. Still, there never seems to be enough time to get things done in the day.

Time management is a skill that everyone needs. It is the process of planning out and controlling the time spent on tasks to increase productivity. As adults, there’s a lot to get done… from kids to work, cooking to cleaning, driving to staying fit and healthy… I could go on and on.

Well for kids, this skill is first developed in school. They must learn to juggle school work, tutoring sessions, family, friends, sport, and other extra-curricular activities. This workload only increases as they trudge their way up through the school years. As children progress through the grades they take on more and more, but many know how to help when students struggle with managing their time.

If these skills are not developed, students can become overwhelmed and suffer academically. Signs that a student is lacking time management skills include:

Leaving schoolwork unfinished

Staying up late at night to finish school work

Cramming for exams

Failing to proofread assignments

High levels of stress

So… how do struggling students improve their time-management skills?

At A Team Tuition, we have a series of tested time management strategies that are implemented in tutoring sessions. We believe that how we can help struggling students is to help set them up for life-long success. Some basic techniques we have found effective are:

Keep a diary with a detailed schedule and stick to it.

Utilise study breaks as encouragement for productivity.

Display a calendar on a wall in the study area.

However, there is nothing more effective than having a personal cheerleader to motivate you on the sidelines! At A Team Tuition, our tutoring services provide additional support to students that need a bit extra help sticking to their time management plan.

Remember it will take time, support and determination to master the art of time management!

4) Lack of goal setting

Every year we all set new year resolutions. Some of us keep it for a week, a month or maybe even for the whole year. But let’s be realistic… not many people succeed at achieving these goals.

But maybe we should all try harder? Setting realistic, timely and achievable goals can have fantastic benefits. It increases efficiency, focus, and productivity.

For kids, goal setting should first be practiced in school. This gives them something to strive and push themselves for. Let’s face it… a student who is putting in the time and effort to achieve an A grade is going to receive a higher result than a student who doesn’t care what grade they get. Signs that students are lacking goal setting skills include:

Failure to set any goals throughout the term

Doesn’t achieve any set goals

Make excuses for failing to meet goals

Fails to reflect on previous results

If this sounds like someone you know… to encourage positive goal setting you can:

Ask the student to write a list of short-term and long-term goals.

Implement different goal strategies (eg. Staircase Goals, Smart Goals, Areas for Change).

Utilise reward programs for achieving set goals.

Implement A Team Tuition’s tutoring services to provide ongoing support to achieve set goals.

Goal setting will take time to get the hang of, but it is a skill they will use for life.

5) Poor Attendance At School

To most people this seems like pure common sense, right? If a student is not at school, they are not engaged and learning. Obviously, this fails to set a student up for success and will likely result in low academic results.

Poor attendance can also have devasting long-term effects… as most schools have an attendance threshold that students are required to meet. In some cases, chronic poor attendance can affect a student’s ability to proceed to the next school year or even graduate.

Does your child have a poor attendance rate? Are they…

Refusing to go to school?

Constantly taking sick days without a doctor’s certificate?

Failing to meet attendance thresholds?

However, what people don’t often realise is that there is normally an underlying issue to a child’s hesitancy of going to school. This may be anything from a lack of confidence to instances of bullying.

But no matter what the issue is, we have some methods to get that attendance rate back up over that green line:

Emphasise the importance and benefits of school attendance to the student.

Build rapport with the student, so that they will tell you any underlying issues.

Meet with your child’s school principal or teacher about reasons for their poor attendance.

Parents should be authoritative and enforce attendance.

Set an attendance rule (e.g. No days off without a medical certificate).

Remember, while school may not be the most exciting place on earth, it does have its pros. From seeing friends to a range of diverse classes… there is something exciting for everyone. Make sure to emphasise the positives!

So, there you have it… there are the five fatal traits and how to help struggling students! If your child resembles any of these traits, don’t stress! Just follow these tips and your student should be back on track in no time!

IMPORTANT!

If these issues do persist, please do not hesitate to contact your student’s school. They will have a range of student support resources available. Externally, A Team Tuition’s tutoring services can provide additional support that is individualised to your student’s needs.

What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a term that unfortunately is widely thrown around to describe how people feel in a bunch of different situations; exams, before an important meeting or interview or even making small talk.

But it seems people seem to have forgotten than anxiety is a genuine psychological condition – that effects around 1 in 3 people. Many often think of anxiety as just being nerves or being bit uncomfortable, but it is so so much more than that.

It’s when these feelings start to become somewhat unbearable, and interfere with everyday life and prevent you from doing everyday tasks, that is becomes a proper issue.

Before this goes any further, I want to urge you that if you feel like this blog relates to you a bit too much, please go and ask for help. Many people don’t feel like they want to reach out to their parents or friends out of fear of being seen as weak. But asking for help is one of the bravest things you can do.

So ask your teachers, friends, or even just have a look at sites like Beyond Blue for ways to help manage your anxiety, because you will be better off for it.

Also, there will be times during school that you might notice friends are struggling with anxiety, or they might even tell you. When that happens, it can be a bit overwhelming because the first reaction is usually, ‘what can I do to help’.

Some of the best things you can do when you are trying to help a friend are to do some research on what anxiety is – trying to understand what your friend is going through will make it much easier for you to help them if you’ve researched some ways to do so.

Other than that, just keep an eye out for times when your friend might be getting anxious, and when that happens, just listen to what they have to say. What they are stressing over might seem completely irrational, and they probably know it is as well – but don’t mention that.

Also, probably the worst thing you could do would be to tell them to ‘clam down’.

Mental Health In Schools

While the conversation around mental health is beginning to become much less stigmatised, unfortunately, many schools are failing to equip, or are just beginning to start to help the students that they see as at risk of suffering, or are already suffering from anxiety.

Along with this, there are still many who fail to see any sort of mental health issue, such as anxiety, as a genuine problem. But if there is one thing that I know, is that anxiety can cripple you as any physical injury can.

You wouldn’t expect someone with a broken leg to run a marathon, so why are people with anxiety expected to put themselves into situations everyday where they are at risk of having an attack?

how to manage school anxiety

For myself in particular, I always had a bit of anxiety growing up, but once I hit grade 11 and 12, it became a serious problem that I had to get help for.

I put a lot of pressure on myself in school to get A’s, as I had set high goals for myself and good grades were the way to achieve these goals – but it came at a cost. Grade 12 for me, was riddled with anxiety attacks.

The worst I can remember is in week 4 of the first term when I was handed a revision sheet for my Ancient History exam. I remember thinking how everything was becoming so real, and I couldn’t contain myself anymore, I broke down and wasn’t able to calm down for what seemed like forever.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t the only time this happened. However, I was lucky to have some amazing teachers who recognised that I was struggling, and did everything they could to help me get through.

Anxiety can affect so many aspects of school, in particular the most important moments.Handing in an assignment, starting an exam, such as QCS and so many more.

And while unfortunately, there aren’t many ways you can get around doing these things, and many schools might not let students with anxiety take an exam indifferent conditions to the usual silent room with 30 people in it, there are ways to manage anxiety yourself.

Steps To Take To Manage Your Anxiety When In School

First, gain an understanding of what your anxiety is and how to recognise it. This is best done by going to a psychologist, as it is important to never try and self-diagnose.

From there learn some coping mechanisms to try and handle your anxiety when you feel it being triggered. The simplest, and often most effective of which, being breathing.

From there, it is important to reach out to a teach or staff member at your school who you feel comfortable opening up to about this.

While this may be scary, I promise that they will be willing to listen to everything you have to say, and will do everything they can to help you manage your anxiety.

As an Academic Personal Trainer, If I were to see a student suffering from anxiety – I would make sure getting that anxiety under control becomes to top priority. Trying to work while feeling anxious, or even having an anxiety attack is nearly impossible.

So it is usually best to put the work at hand aside, which might stress the student out more, but that is when you need to explain that no good results can come from when they are feeling like they are. And again, it is the same if your friend were to be suffering from anxiety, the best thing you can do is listen to everything they have to say and just be there for them.

They generally aren’t asking for advice, and someone suffering with anxiety generally won’t accept advice in that moment, but if you have some which is based on personal experience, it is best to ask if they wish to hear what you have to say, and if yes, then do what you can to help them.

Something you can also do is talk to your Academic Personal Trainer, as they often are happy to mentor students and genuinely want to see you do your best. They will sit with you and listen to you and whatever you feel you need to vent about so that you can continue achieving at the highest standard that you can.

Next, learn to recognise when you feel your anxiety coming on, and with as many teachers as you can, have a subtle way to let them know that you might just need a minute out of the class or your exam to try and calm yourself down. Something I like to do is find a certain song, or even a 3-minute meditation on Headspace to try and calm down.

While these are ways to cope in class, exams can be a whole different story for students with anxiety. While it is normal to get nervous before exams, those with anxiety may feel like the exam is the absolute be all and end all, and if you try to tell them that ‘it’s going to be okay, it will be over soon’, chances are you are making them feel worse.

Some things I would do before an exam when I feel an anxiety attack coming on (which, let’s be honest, it was all of them) would make sure the night before and morning of the exam were as relaxed as a I could make them. I was always a student who was on top of their work, and would study hard, but I always had a rule that I wouldn’t study after 7pm the night before the exam.

This was so I could do something to relax, whether it a mediation, just listening to music, stretching or anything of the sort to take my mind off it – and to get the best night’s sleep that I could.

Also, making sure your bag is packed with every possible thing you think you might need the night before the exam is a great way to stop stressing about all the things you have to do the next morning. With that, the morning of it is best to get to school a good while before your exam, just so you can adjust to your surroundings before the exam.

In Summary

Recognise first what your anxiety is, as well as what triggers it.

During a time when you aren’t feeling anxious, go to a teacher or staff member and explain to them what is going on and develop a system where when you feel your anxiety coming on, that you can take a break from what you’re doing.

When you feel anxious, do your best to remove yourself from the situation you’re in, and find one friend, or even just be be by yourself somewhere quiet, and listen to soft music or a quick mediation to try and calm down.

Now, these things are all so much easier said than done, and it took me a good while to learn to implement them into my life. But it got to the point where I didn’t really have a choice. I wanted to excel in school, and I had to come to terms with the fact that it wasn’t going away, so the most important thing you can do if you still want to excel in school with anxiety is ask for help. If anything, that will be the one thing that will allow the people around you to help you get through it, as anxiety is not something that you should try and get through by yourself, especially if you want those A’s.

Here are some links to places where you can get a better understanding of anxiety and how to get some help.

At A Team, we aim to provide a sense of enrichment to all our students, whether it may be in the form of academic achievements or personal development. To do this, our tutors are dedicated to instilling motivation and confidence in their students through creative means.

For one of our incredible tutors, Rimaz Toto, such a mindset was extremely effective in transforming one of her Year 6 Math students, Chloe, into a shining star.

Some would say Maths is interesting in the sense that it is a subject that can be explored in so many different ways, and to so many different extents. Others might say that it is the subject they find most challenging, or that they just can’t seem to get their head around it!

Before receiving tutoring from A Team Tuition, Chloe was one of the latter.

As a student who was struggling with Maths in school, Chloe’s greatest weaknesses were comprehending complex Maths questions and understanding how to approach those questions.

Consequently, her parents felt tutoring would be of great help to Chloe’s result in Maths after discussing it with her teacher.

As Chloe’s brother, Harrisa, was already being tutored by Rimaz and receiving great results, Chloe’s parents did not hesitate to seek out A Team Tuition again for Chloe’s Academic Personal Training.

Just as we aim to satisfy all our clients, Chloe’s parents were very content with Rimaz as their tutor: “We all bonded with Rimaz immediately; she is very easy to talk to and Chloe feels very comfortable with her”.

Fortunately, Rimaz identified Chloe’s greatest struggles almost instantly!

“I often found that Chloe woul make silly mistakes or not fully understand the question, leaving her confused and stressed. I figured this out during the initial session, where I had printed out some simple straight forward questions and some wordy questions. I found that the straightforward questions Chloe was able to answer confidently, however the wordy questions she was struggling a bit”.

Accordingly, Rimaz brainstormed ideas to tackle Chloe’s weaknesses in Maths.

“In terms of the strategy that I implemented to address Chloe’s struggles, I started practicing straightforward and wordy questions in every session. I would also assign her homework that would allow her to practice the content we had completed during the session. The worksheets that I gave her aligned with similar ones that her teacher gave her, and Chloe was able to build her knowledge through those practice questions and then work on harder wordy questions in the sessions”.

Nonetheless, transforming Chloe did not come easy to Rimaz.

For most tutors, the first few academic personal training sessions are often spent on getting to know their students a little better. This is so that tutors can connect to their students on a personal level, and also to find out their hobbies and habits.

When Rimaz first began tutoring Chloe, she felt a little lost as to where to begin. Though she had previously tutored Chloe’s brother and discovered his study methods, she couldn’t exactly get Chloe’s.

“It took time and after many conversations with Chloe’s mother, we both knew that Chloe knew all the information she needed to know for all her classes, her biggest struggle was practicing those questions and putting the knowledge into context.”

On top of that, Rimaz experienced slight difficulties in stimulating her sessions with Chloe.

“The toughest thing with tutoring in general is finding a balance between challenging the student but also making the session fun and enjoyable. I found that Chloe was a very hyperactive kid and would often get distracted and hungry very easily.”.

Rimaz revealed that this hindered Chloe’s ability to concentrate and focus 100% of the time during their tutoring session. As a result, Rimaz worked hard to find a balance in her lessons with Chloe, and soon realised that Chloe simply needed some distraction time throughout the session in order to regain her concentration.

“We would often take the occasional breaks and I would ask her questions that were not school related. For example, “what did you buy when you went shopping this weekend?”, “what’s your favourite thing about dancing?”. These questions distracted her from her study and she was able to focus for another 20 minutes before we would have to take another break”.

Accordingly, Chloe noted that “the best part about my tutor is that she is always cheerful,” and “(I) get advice and it is not boring”. Chloe also felt that she began to develop the desire to get better grades, as opposed to before she started tutoring.

Slowly but surely, Chloe’s transformation began to take place. When asked, her parents also confirmed that Chloe’s confidence improved and so did her results.

Undoubtedly, this was largely attributable to Rimaz’s patience, observance and effective academic personal training.

“(Chloe’s) turning point occurredwhen I realized that the practice questions and homework that I was assigning her was helping her. I tailored the tutoring sessions to meet Chloe’s academic needs and that’s what every tutor should do because once you do that, everything clicks into place and the lightbulb shines”.

As the fruits of her labour, Chloe’s impressive transformation has definitely boosted her confidence and allowed her to become more sociable as well as outgoing in numerous aspects of her life. Rimaz also quickly recognised that Chloe became a lot happier and less stressed out about school upon her steady transformation over 5 months.

Upon appreciating such results, we at A Team Tuition are extremely pleased that Rimaz was the perfect tutor for Chloe, as Rimaz herself revealed:

“I think the reason why I was able to achieve this transformation and not her parents or teachers is because A team equipped me with the skills and strategies that they need in order to assist Chloe. A team helped me identify my strengths and I was able to implement those strengths into the tutoring sessions and use my strengths to help the student improve”.

“Also, I feel teachers are unable to complete this transformation because of the other responsibilities they have. Teachers have to look after a number of students, whereas with tutoring, the tutor’s attention is on the student and their area of difficulty”.

Remarkably, Chloe was not the only one who was transformed through this time.

“Chloe has allowed me to become more patient and appreciative of everything that I have,” Rimaz commented.

“Chloe vibrates love and happiness and that atmosphere has rubbed off on me and allowed me to become just a happy person”.

Even more, Chloe’s parents were also greatly benefited by the tutoring sessions:

“Homework is a much calmer and happier experience for all of us!!!”

We are extremely proud of Chloe’s transformation from a C to an A in Maths and can’t wait to see what this dynamic duo achieves in the near future!

Not only did Rimaz and Chloe’s story further boost our immense confidence in both our tutors and our clients; it has also certainly imparted to all of us that - anything is possible with the right support, resources, and can-do mindset!

The last school bell of the year rings. You have finally completed Year 11 and an appealing two months of school-free holiday awaits you. Firstly, congratulations on finishing your second last year of school! You are now one step closer to the long-awaited graduation – exciting, isn’t it? While this is surely a prime time for some well-deserved celebration and relaxation, getting prepared for a smooth transition from Year 11 to Year 12 will definitely come in handy in your final year of school.

A couple of simple steps and you will see Year 12 fly by like an arrow as you make the most of your last schooling year! Learn more about the transition from year 11 to year 12 and how both matter when it comes to ATAR scores.

1. Treasure Your Year 11 Notes

If you have had a peek at your Year 12 subject textbooks, you will see topics that are almost identical to those studied in Year 11. Senior subject topics are introduced in Year 11 and expanded in Year 12. You will be studying the same topics, just with more advanced content and to a more profound level – this will apply to most core subjects. Year 11 to Year 12 is about building on what you already learned. Don't chuck your old books, they'll be worth their weight in gold!

The good news about this is, you get to re-use all your Year 11 notes! Think of Year 11 as a foundation year in preparation for Year 12; it contains all the formative assessments while Year 12 is comprised of summative assessments.

That said, the notes that helped you through Year 11 will be of equal advantage to you in Year 12, especially when you need to refer to the basics in order to understand more challenging concepts.

To give yourself an extra boost, scan through your Year 11 notes occasionally throughout the summer holidays to refresh your memory on what you have learnt in the past year. This way, you will be all ready-to-go in Year 12 without having to revise the old concepts after school has begun.

2. Make Use Of Holiday Sessions

What better way to excel in Year 12 than to gain the advantage of being few steps ahead throughout the whole year?

Begin with requesting for holiday sessions with your tutor, who will be more than eager to help those of their students who seek to achieve above and beyond.

For your holiday sessions, select 2 to 3 of your strongest or most liked subjects and start the respective Term 1 syllabus. As you complete the first few topics that will be taught in Term 1 during the holidays, the content shall sit deeper in your mind when you learn it a second time in school.

Not only will this ensure you have a more profound understanding of the content than the rest of your cohort, you are now one term ahead of schedule in that it allows you and your tutor to begin Term 2 work at the end of Term 1 as well as during your break in between.

Consequently, throughout Year 12, you would have learnt the subjects you have selected twice, so that you become even stronger in your strongest subjects.

I also recommended for you to choose your most liked subjects for this purpose because you wouldn’t want to get sick of subjects you do not necessarily enjoy by studying them over the holidays, right?

Don’t get me wrong, holidays are still a time for you to relax, travel, catch up with friends, or stay home to binge watch TV series all day!

In view of that, your holiday tutoring sessions can take place either weekly or fortnightly, and easily scheduled according to your personal timetable, as our Academic Personal Trainers are usually pretty flexible and accommodating during the school holidays!

3. Set Goals And Follow A Plan

Almost every achievement is a result of a goal. Nevertheless, your goals do not have to be result-specific; it may not be realistic to set the goal of achieving an OP 1 when you do not have a plan that works towards this goal.

Hence, it is ideal to set goals that are attainable hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly. For instance:

Finish Your Maths homework in an hour without any distractions

Complete 300 words of your assignment by the end of the day

Go to a consultation with your subject teacher at least once a week

Finish reading the book you are studying in English by the end of the month

Such goals should not only be set when Year 12 begins, but also in the holidays during your transition between Year 11 to Year 12 (though they can be much more laid back!).

If you struggle to construct a realistic timetable during your holidays, simply consult your Academic Personal Trainer to give you a hand!

Personally, I like to utilise the sticky notes on my laptop as my planner, reason being I can easily edit them in the event that I am left with extra time to accomplish more or when plans change.

For those of you who prefer writing your goals down however, there are a variety of aesthetic planners available in bookshops and gift shops for you to choose from.

I recommend something handy which you can carry around with you so to ensure you will always stay on track with your plans. You could also have a look at the Neurobooks developed by A Team for a more content-specific planner.

By crafting an elaborate timetable in which you will follow diligently throughout Year 12, you are taking baby steps towards achieving your bigger, long-term goal.

Such goal-setting will also warrant a smooth transition as you have composed a clear path you wish to follow, which already places you ahead of the year!

4. Solidify Relationships With Teachers And Classmates

While academic goals and achievements are crucial in your final year of school, good relationships with those whom you will see 7 hours a day, 5 days a week are equally essential.

Imagine having spent most of your life with the same classmates and the same teachers who have been around since Prep, and now you have reached your last ever schooling year – you’d want to make the most out of it!

Firstly, cherish your high-school friendships as they may last a lifetime.

One of my best memories from Year 12 was the fun we had when my friends and I assisted one another in completing homework, group presentations and assessments.

This consisted of late-night calls, sleepovers and staying back after school to brainstorm ideas - you’d also be surprised how much you may learn from your classmates!

Secondly, develop close relationships with your teachers. Why? Check out our blog “Why being a teacher’s pet is so cool” to be amazed by the many benefits that come with good relationships with your teachers!

In addition, the numbered days you have together will make this coming year the most unforgettable year.

All in all, by solidifying relationships with your teachers and classmates, you will guarantee yourself a fun and rewarding time in Year 12!

5. Think Ahead

It is no doubt that Year 12 will be your busiest year of school. Amidst all the impending assessments, you have carnivals, house events, ATAR preparation, formal, and a number of other different school activities!

However, you shall not neglect to ponder about some huge decisions that you have to soon confront.

For example, begin thinking about the degree you would like to study in University, and set a goal for yourself to work towards accordingly. If you're worried about making it to the final cut, now is the time to lock in your study goals for year twelve.

Alternatively, deliberate your plans after graduation - whether it is a gap year, or straight into a career, you have set out for yourself.

It could be anything at all – competing in performing arts, joining a sports team, becoming a tutor with A Team Tuition, or moving to another country for a couple of months – you are in control of your own decisions.

Again, you won’t likely go wrong with an elaborate plan set out for the year after Year 12.

I am sure you will consider these steps while easing your way into your final year of school. Going from year 11 to year 12 is an exciting challenge and one you're ready to take on. We know you've got this! – A Team Tuition wishes you the best of luck. Exciting times ahead!
